WD TV Live kaput

It has 4 USB ports so you can plug in hard drives / flash drives, you can either use your smart phone as the remote or buy a £10 kodi compatible remote.

Exactly! I did mention that earlier. I would have no clue about setting one up. How and what is needed to do so?

Ok, it's not exactly 'out of the box' but you only need to do a tiny bit of work yourself to achieve what you need.

1. Purchase a Pi: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raspberry-pi-2-model-b-soc-mini-mainboard-1-gb-ram-4x-usb-2.0-mb-014-ok.html (kit with a case/power supply and v3 would be better found on...another website)
2. Purchase SD card pre-loaded with NOOBS: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/8gb-...oobs-official-card-and-adapter-fl-016-ok.html (first boot select openELEC and wait 5mins)
3. Plug external hard drive or USB for playback.

Done.

And thats it? Connect to TV and away i go?

Is not the Elegiant S905 same thing? And cheaper?

damn funny thread. after all these years there still isn't a simple answer.

i've had a couple of different versions of the wdtv live. first generation with no wifi, and the latest. perfect for plug and play but there is always an issue occasionally with the latest. and it can lag when there is 2000+ movies to search through.

hopefully when the time comes to changing it, there will be an upgrade!

There is a simple answer. A cheap Sony/Samsung BR player with a USB slot. A basic player cost 30-40, and one with wifi comes in at 50. Hardly breaking the bank.

I gave up on my WD TV recently. Too many issues to list. I went for a Stoga 2GB Android 6 TV box with Gigabit ethernet. Perfect so far and just a much better experience in all ways.

Would the one i linked to above be the same?

There's at least an Android 5.1 to 6 difference. I know I'd prefer that in a tablet or phone, not sure what would make it better in a TV box. But If I was buying one now, I'd sooner get one with the latest (available) OS.

Ok, so 6 is the latest?

Think i will go for the Elegiant S905

I wouldn't. I had a quick look on EBay and the latest boxes have Marshmallow (6), 3gb ram, 4k streaming and the latest Kodi (17).

Your choice but the box you linked is out of date.
