"We are not allowed to ask for water"

2 things.

Its his own fault for not carrying a bottle of water in his van, I mean how hard is that? Infact how hard is it to buy a bottle of water from any shop anywhere?

Whilst it seems utterly anal and im sure i would offer the dude a drink too no problems i understand why they have these kind of rules as it limits bad customer interaction and keeps delivery times shorter. like somone else said it only takes 1 in 1000 to act all weird and crappy and they have PR problem.

Interesting. Self-employed I presume? They get driven pretty hard.

Ah, the "self employed" scam.

Where you take all of the risks, bear all the up-front costs, obey all the rules and mandates, and get paid jack ****.

Abuse of "self-employment" is just a symptom of an out-of-control situation. Where not only do the 1% horde most of the world's wealth, but their share is increasing at never-before seen rates.

Won't end well. Can't end well.

On a sidenote, I've never actually understood how delivery drivers, taxi drivers even workmen survive the day without easy access to a loo. Granted (I'm told) I go to the loo more than most as I do drink a fair amount of water but it can't be nice not knowing where you can stop when that coffee gets through your system for example  :p

Yeah, it's a total crock. Little security. Difficulty with accessing benefits for drivers on such arrangements, if things go south. Then you count the stress, invasive tracking and risk, and it's a total skew towards the employer. Indeed even unionising under such conditions is virtually impossible and people fight for scraps between themselves instead, which is neither stable nor fair.

A stopgap measure before automation comes in, methinks. Then we will really need to have a chat about the social contract and the future of employment in this country and across the world.

An average human bladder can endure 4-5 hours without urination. You'd be surprised at what the pros can manage. Plus public toilets are available at pretty much every busy commuter junction I know of.

Well done OP for the nice gesture, however any grown adult should be able to adequately provision themselves in this heat with water.

I used to be out driving all day, even went as far as to bring a small cool bag with some frozen bottles if it was going to be scorchio.

Can you imagine being exposed to the heat out there all day, when heatwaves like this are so relatively rare? You could take out a two litre bottle, thinking you easily have enough, only to finish it within a few hours.

If the delivery vans have trackers, the drivers could worry about disciplinary action for going off-route to buy some liquid. Which if possible, is truly shocking from an elf&safety perspective.

So he forgot his water one day, what now? He can't break or ask for water because those are the rules?

I wouldn't treat a dog like that.
Well personally if I was the driver I'd just stop and buy some water and accept the argument afterwards. Yes it's a stupid 'rule' that he can't stop to buy water but it's easy to imagine why such a rule is in place as you'd have drivers stopping for all sorts of excuses.

Yeah, I remember reading that David Cameron a while ago hosted some important EU meeting or something and they went for 9hrs without breaks or something daft. That makes me hurt just thinking about it!

Just to pick out the point of "he should have his own", he did, he drunk it all.

Ive gotten through 2 litres today myself sat in a relatively cooled office in comparison to being outside or driving around.

He's driving a delivery van.... he can't fill up 2 * 2 liter bottles and put them in the cab?

I think perhaps he needs to man up a bit or just sort out his personal admin...

*shrug* everyone gets caught out once in a while.

I aint gonna quibble over 10 pence telling him to sort his admin out, if it makes you feel big to think so, go nuts ;)

it is really silly to let yourself get dehydrated like that - nothing to do with feeling big but rather a legitimate health and safety issue...

if he's screwed up and forgetten then he ought to sort it out - pull over and stop to buy some from a local shop

Haha, you should have titled this thread "*** PSA : Delivery Drivers don't like this weather ***"

From what I have heard from delivery drivers, they have more deliveries than they can handle most of the time, so have to work fast - Can't be nice in this weather :(

Saw some bin men working today,

Cant be nice for them either. Now, while modern day bin-maning is a bit ********* compared to what it used to be in the 60's, it is still fast physical work and Ill bet they are suffering somewhat in this heat (Not least because of all the heavy clothing they have to wear)

It is important to remember that people who are hot, bothered and dehydrated are also likley not to have their thinking caps on straight any more! So keep an eye out for Binmen when you are driving past them just in case one inadvertently attempts to sacrifice himself to Juggernaut under your wheels while you are passing!!

If i'm ever home I offer some to the mail man all the time and have a little chat with him.
Can't be easy on your feet delivering mail all afternoon.

What a load of crap...

1. Take your own
2. Stop and buy some
3. Who would know if you asked.
4. If you get the sack for stopping for water/taking water asking for water. Mention tribunal and watch your employer cave in.
