So a local delivery guy turns up, dripping wet and not looking too healthy.

I asked if he was feeling ok given the temperature, and he replied that he cant wait to get to lunch to go and buy some more water, so I offered him a couple of bottles from the fridge (we buy bottled water by the thousand on a pallet) to which he immediately accepted and thanked me saying its company policy that even in this temperature, they can not ask for water (even from a tap), and if they need a refill they have to wait until a break or go back to base.

I thought that's absolutely crazy!? Surely someones health is not worth whatever paperwork or regulation to simply ask for water?

Either way, ive now stocked up the fridge next to the door with 50 bottles with a notice on my door for delivery guys to help themselves, im not going to quibble over a 10pence bottle of water in this heat for people.

TLDR: Offer your delivery guys some water in this heat.

I've just watched, 'Where to invade next', Micheal Moore. In France the primary school kids get scallops & 3* meals. So after that, in this moment in time, it does seem a bit daft.

Why do people even accept being treat like that at work? Surely that's not even legal.

It is totally legal. They are allowed water but not allowed to ask customers and are required to wait for their break before spending time within work-hours to refill their water.

It is certainly unreasonable but also unsurprising.

Good going OP

Haha, you should have titled this thread "*** PSA : Delivery Drivers don't like this weather ***"

From what I have heard from delivery drivers, they have more deliveries than they can handle most of the time, so have to work fast - Can't be nice in this weather :(

This kind of heat, I think I would just ask if I could have some water. Most people would say no problem. It's probably the only awkward sod, 1 out of every 5000, who would complain just to get some kind of satisfaction.

Well kudos to the OP for giving him some water.

On the other hand I'm going to get some water BEFORE I start work as that seems a much better plan.

I'll try it both ways, buy a couple of bottles myself today and go around asking other people tomorrow, see how I get on.

I never used to charge people for water when working behind a bar despite my boss insisting on 22p per pint as its a service charge. What they gonna do? Sack you for charging for water?

Nice one op your munificence will be appreciated by him I'm sure.

Surely it's down to the drivers to adequately stock up on water beforehand so they don't have to ask?

This. I dont think they should be asking customers for water to be honest. I personally wouldnt mind but i know some wouldn't appreciate it (old women living on their own etc) and it would seem quite unprofessional.

It isnt hard to fill a bottle of water up and take it to work with you.

I guess it might be due to health and safety (yuk) as they have no way to verify if someone fills up a bottle that the water is clean.

Good on you for giving him a few bottles though.
