Weak demand leads Apple to halve iPhone 5 component orders

Estimated? And how big is the Chinese market for iPhones in a global scale?

10%? I call BS. I know lots of iPhone 4/4s users and none are jailbroken.

I know a few 4/4s users too, nearly half are jailbroken.

The Chinese market is bloody huge. Their <30 "middle class" demographic is over 60m people.

Apple aren't going anywhere, and if anything the stronger competition they currently face can only be beneficial.

Which is good, as I too can't stand the Android platform. I'd rather go without than have to use a Nexus 7 or S3 :/

IOS vs Android! FIGHT!

In the last 12 months I have gone from a Windows 7 Phone that was smooth but lacked in apps to an android phone that had the apps but was laggy/buggy (ICS) to an iPhone 4 which both has the apps and is smooth running.

Android just does not make sense. The phone I had was dual core with sufficient ram yet it was slow, unresponsive and crashed a lot. The iPhone would not appear to be as good in the hardware sense but everything just works.

ICS was crap compared to jellybean for smoothness. JB fixed this IMO

Are they all members of this board? Does it reflect the typical iPhone user demographic?

I don't know anyone on this board.

From the stuff I've read / heard on the radio about China, it's this burgeoning 20-40 age group that are lapping up "western" luxury goods. There was a good half hour about it this morning on Radio 5, talking about Land Rover production and Chinese sales. Yes, I'd say most people I know with iPhones are 20 - 40. I know two owners that are 60 odd, one from the pub, and one being one of my mates from school's dad. Both of those are jailbroken by the way.

You obviously know little on the subject, so dismissing what I'm saying is a little arrogant. :) I'm not saying it has a huge impact on aggregate sales, but it certainly has some. Especially when you consider the China angle.

I know for a fact, there are people I know who have not upgraded to an iPhone 5 because they can't jailbreak them. This includes everyone I know with an iPhone 4, who should really be on their natural upgrade cycle.

Similarly I know people who haven't upgraded to an ATV3 because there's no jailbreak. I held out for ages not buying one umming an arring about if I should buy a used ATV2 instead. You've only got to look at the used prices to see how that effects ATV3 sales. I know 5 people (including my ATV 3) with an ATV. 3 of them are ATV2s. 2 of them are jailbroken and are on 1080p TVs.

On the flip side, of myself and the people I know, nobody runs a jailbroken iOS device. Some are just family members, but several work in IT on the technical side.

I tried it in the past and just have absolutely no need to. People who say Apple devices are useless unless they are Jailbroken make me laugh.

And the moral of the story is, Less people have all that money to waste on the latest and greatest from Apple. Not just in this country but around the world. lol

Me too I know no-one either.

I know quite a few iphone users.

I suppose it's because people like the smaller phone it's more pocket friendly and the 5 does exactly what the 4S does. I think we need a jump in specs before we see any change.

Having seen andriod and tried to use it I'll stick to the iOS thanks.....

The thing that puts me off the black iphone 5 is the black anodizing wearing off the outside metal edging, I much prefer the bare metal look of my 4S.

It's annoying that the white iphone 5 obviously does not suffer from this but I dislike white phones.

I hope the next revision corrects this problem.

iPhones had its day!? pahaha dont make me laugh.

So demand isn't as high. I think the volume they've shifted might say something bold.
iOS is stale. Its stale by its own standards. Its still far better than Android hense why I have had an iPhone for 6 years now.

This yeah is all about iOS. Its gonna be transformed into something far better and the Apple eco system will get a new member.

Apple's going nowhere.

Does that still happen? The only time I saw it mentioned was on launch day, and I've not seen it since, making me think it was either scaremongering or people doing it on purpose to troll Apple. Certainly my black 5 from launch day is still immaculate.

If you know so much more than me, then show me some real numbers, not "your friends". Go stand outside Tesco for a week and ask every shopper will have a truer reflection on the percentage of jailbroken iPhones than asking your friends. As typically I am guessing you are 18-30, and so are your friends, so the reflection is massively skewed and flawed. You might as well take a survey in MIT and ask if they like to watch science fiction.

And explain how the second link made the original one redundant.

Ahem.
