Webber to leave F1 for return to Le Mans with Porsche

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says it is "essentially" a two-horse race between Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo to replace Mark Webber.

Following Webber's decision to retire at the end of the season, Horner said at the British Grand Prix the shortlist to join Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull in 2014consisted of Raikkonen, Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne. However, with Red Bull deciding to test Ricciardo at Silverstone this week, when asked if that meant it was a straight choice between two drivers and that Vergne is out of the running Horner replied: "Essentially, probably.

I think the article reads like it might be making moutains out of mole hills with regards to Horners input, but hopefully Ricciardo!!

It will be money at the end of the day. If RBR are willing to pay what Kimi wants, it will be Kimi. If they aren't, it will be Ricciardo.

I can't imagine he will be asking for his Ferrari days £40m, but I don't expect he will come cheap either.

He won't be cheap, he'll know he's going there 'second favourite' if he did and so he'd be doing it for the money rather than the chance at competing I reckon.

I really cannot believe that Kimi would be willing to be the #2 driver in a team, he's been the #1 for almost his entire career..

When you consider his past teammates, Heidfeld, Coulthard, Montoya, Massa, Grosjean, I would consider only Montoya to be a serious contender, but even then he was too inconsistent. Ultimately, Kimi has never really had to be second fiddle, and I doubt he will start now.

I want to believe he is the kind of guy that won't be attracted by money (I mean he has so much money already right! :) ). Alas, I guess everyone has their price tag and Kimi, in a marketing sense, must be worth a lot of money. I think his price tag will be very high.

His desire for a fat wage is why he spent 2 years crashing rally cars. I imagine he may have toned down his demands recently, but he isn't going to go anywhere cheaply.

That's what I mean, maybe he is so loaded now after all these years he might not care about the money and just enjoy being "the man" at Lotus. Maybe he detests the idea of working at the corporate machine that is RBR. Hope so. Hopefully he stays, but if he does go, I hope he beats Seb :)

More discussion during the commentary and interviews today, it does sound like Alonso's people are talking to Red bull but Seb doesn't want him there, Seb actually said he would prefer Kimi.

I don't think Alonso would be good for he team, not to sure about Kimi either, Ricciardo has to be the choice doesn't he?

pity Mark is leaving. one of my favourite drivers, even if he isn't as fast as Vettel. but I love his race craft, it's clean and fair - like Button, Alonso and Kimi. However will be cool to see him in a Porsche.

Think RB will try and get Kimi, since Mercedes seems to be getting better and who knows what will happen next year. Also, Kimi is probably the best available bet to challenge Vettel's dominance, which we need as spectators. so it's a win win for RB and the fans. Am sure Kimi likes to get paid, but I think he came back to F1 more to win than to get paid. RB is his best chance to do it.

It's hard to say about Riccardo and Vergne, since Torro Rosso have been so irrelevant. Don't understand why JEV doesn't get the love. He doesn't qualify as well, but he races better - afterall he leads in points yet has had more DNF (none were his fault afaik)

Hopefully Lotus will sign Hulkenberg next year, since realistically Hulkenberg deserves a better car and Sauber needs money more than a driver -> Guttierez brings more money than talent and the rich Russian teenager is joining/bought Sauber. For a second driver I think Lotus need to replace Grosjean and give Bianchi a chance. I don't think Grosjean is as bad as the press like to make it, but I don't think after his couple of years he is that good either and doesn't deserve that seat (he can show signs of brilliance but overall is average), maybe in a mid pack team like Force India but not in a potential race winning car.

my 2 cents

BBC talked about Hamilton at Mercedes and quite distinctly the quote said "moving to Mercedes was a great move for his career in the SHORT term". I wonder if that means he will be leaving there soon and to where!

They are referring to the fact that its looked like a good move because McLaren have struggled. He's on a 3 year contract and nobody knows what the future holds in terms of Mercedes ability to create a good car.

He isn't going anywhere yet.
