Weekend Football **SPOILERS** 14-16 March

I realise it's only all of two points separating them, but it's starting to look like the battle is from 12th downwards now.

We were all talking at work and honestly reckon that if your not involved in it, the last day of the season could be a right laugh, as for us stuck in it, it's going to be a rollercoaster, as a Toon fan I at least hope we can still be in with a chance come the last day of the season, I'm bricking it

That's the funny thing really. Theoretically even West Ham aren't safe, although it would probably take a very specific set of results to get them back in it. Beyond West Brom, no-one else looks particularly certain of relegation, as it's all just so random at the moment.

Same here, also it looks like none of the current 12-19th play each other on the last day, could be watching 8 different matches :D

Team you woudln't want to be? Stoke I think, away to Arsenal who tend to play well when there's not a lot to play for (assuming Villa have capitulated by that point)

LMAO that is quite superb, "Where's me other tash, what have you done with it......where's me Rafa goatee" Oh man I actually burst out in laughter when I heard that :D

Oh and a big thank you to Spurs today, am I the only one who saw the irony in them chanting "Champions League you're havin a laugh" at the Villa supporters :D Great weekend football wise, finally back in the Top 4 after what feels like forever. When we drew against Fulham a few weeks back I had actually thrown the towel in, then seeing Villa 2nil I couldn't even bare to check out what happened in the rest of that match. However the job is not done yet and we still have some obstacles in our path.

I'm glad we cleared that up ;)

OT, nice to see you again :)

Cheers dude, not around as much these days but do lurk. Hardly know any of the posters here now!

And ONLY 4 points off what would be a likely European Spot (7th).

Yes indeed, all a bit close this season. Am over the moon with the win today, totally shocked if i'm being honest, especially when looking at the stats after 25 mins where Villa had 62% possession .

Oh well, just taking each game as it comes atm as dont want to take anything for granted, especially this season.

Sigh at Villa - we've been playing lucky since before Christmas and knew it would run out eventually. Watching the highlights tonight just showed a team with little creativity and we allowed Spurs to play their game away from home.

Theres still time but I honestly cant complain about where we are - just wished the last 3weeks hadnt had happened as we would have pretty much sown it up otherwise :p. Need to get Carew playing full 90 ASAP - he always puts out a performance and I think it makes the other players raise their game...

Cant believe its the Spurs whove helped Arsenal secure 4th for now ;)

ps3ud0

Think Heskey's been the catalyst for their poor run recently. They don't look as quick in attack since he joined them.
I understand his role up front, but both he and gabby are guilty of laying the ball off to someone else without even considering the possibility of glancing round and seeing if there's space to head nearer the goal. Neither can really take responsibility for making something happen from a static position :/

The lucky escapes this season are far outweighed by genuinely solid performances, so I'm confident that Villa will return to form soon enough. If we can engineer 3-4 points from the next 3 games it'd brilliant. Curious as to what's happening in defence through. Reo Coker started at right back, moved to the centre when Knight was subbed, then moved to left back when Gardner came one. Bring back Nicky Shorey!

Imo Villa's problem is a lack of goalscorers. They've got 3 or so players that will chip in with the odd goal but nobody whatsoever who they can really rely on.

Decent performance from us on Saturday, scoring early helped the confidence I think and the general play was a lot more incisive. Arshavin and Nasri were quite creative and once Fabregas and Rosicknote return this should give us some options. Blackburn came back into it towards the end of the first half, but Arsenal came out strong after the break and there was one period of about 15mins where it seemed like Almunia didn't get a touch!

Bendtner missed a few sitters and was getting a fair bit of stick, with the predictable chants for RvP to come on. He gets in good positions but his first touch and finishing are not good enough for a top 4 side. It got to the point where I was literally laughing out loud as he scuffed another shot or blazed it over the bar, what a joke. Despite what the press may have you believe, Eboue got a lot of support when he came on and scored.

Walcott had a fairly typical game for him, looks dangerous when running at players but either makes the wrong decision or executes his final ball poorly. In theory this should come with maturity but he's now 20 years old, players like Owen, Rooney, Fabregas, Messi etc were far more composed in the final third at that age. He's frustrating, you can see the odd game where he's on fire but there's no consistency.

Diouf really is a piece of work, he scythed down Almunia when he had no chance of getting the ball, and was then trying to rough him up later at a set piece. I also have no idea how Pedersen escaped a booking for one of the most blatant dives I've ever seen, play did continue for a while as Arsenal attacked so I can only imagine the ref forgot about it.

Not vintage Arsenal but certainly an improvement on the previous couple of games I've been to. Really need to kick on now and get some points in the bag ASAP, as the last 6 games of the season see us facing Liverpool, Chelsea and Man United, plus 3 teams battling against relegation. By contrast, once they've got the next 3 games out of the way, Villa have a relatively easy run-in.

Problem with Villa is that they actually started to believe the hype, not surprised at the crowd doing what they did to Gabby, they are largely fair weather supporters down there.

I've said for years that Alan Wiley is the best referee in the game, he proved that on Saturday. He was superb in my opinion. Nice to see a referee let the game flow, not throw cards around, blow every 5 seconds and strut around like the big I am. Yes Howard Webb, I am talking about you.

it was a straight red so 3 match ban..

Poor poor show from the utd fans they have all left....prawn sandwich brigade

Just read Vidic has been banned for 2 games. Would have been a 1 game ban but extended to 2 due to it being his second red of the season.

The Serbia international received an extended ban due to the fact that the red card was his second of the campaign, with the first also coming against Liverpool at Anfield earlier in the season.

He had a decent game on Saturday but in general i think he's a bit of a strange ref.

From experience of him reffing our games in the past, i've noticed that he'll only give big decisions if they're absolutely nailed on. On one hand that seems fair enough that he wants to be 100% certain before he gives anything but i've seen him let some shocking tackles go by and not give plenty of clear pens.
Violent conduct = 3 match ban.
Other red card offenses = 1 match ban.

Isn't that right?

I think dangerous play (two footed tackles etc) is a 3 match ban also. INNM the only straight red that isn't a 3 match ban is denying a goal scroing opportunity.
