Weekend Football Thread. Internationals. *spoilers* 4-6

I just have to laugh at the fact everybody is digging knives into Capello when we've pretty much qualified already. Makes a nice change from struggling through at the final hurdle (or not).

But hey, I'll leave you guys bickering while I enjoy the fact that England are actually winning games and will qualify. Sure, we might get found out by better teams at the world cup but lets wait and see until then.

He never had any pace, so I don't see how that effects it? He's the only Winger we have that can consistently put good balls into the box. Be it from Crossing, Corners or Freekicks. And I am willing to bet on him being physically fitter than most of the other players in the squad.

He's not a winger.
He used to play at a fair old lick and although not the quickest, he could do it all match, now, he manages an amble, for 15 minutes.
His crossing and "dead balls" are what got him dropped, him pinging the ball from wide right to the opposing right back 9 times out of 10 got really boring, combine that with the fact he offers nothing else.......

As for him being fitter than most of the other players.......... no really, he isnt.

We may as well give the 3 points to United. Bassong injured during International duty.

Leaving only Ledley King as our only 'fit' centre back.

Talk about your luck.

What I want to know is why Dos Santos isn't playing for Spurs. He's arguably in better form than any other player at WHL and that includes Defoe, Lennon or Modric (pre-injury)

Just come away from the South American Tournament as player of the tournament and then he's just scored an absolute beauty and 2 more assists in Mexico's 3-0 win the other day. If Rooney had done this yesterday, instead of falling over as usual, people may well have passed out in sheer awe of him..? :D

Goal @ 2:25 for 1-0
Brilliant team goal @ 3:25 for 2-0

He, allegedly, hasn't been taking things too seriously.

Harry has recently said though that he is in his plans.

I raise you a Centre Back coming back from International duty with an operation completed and out for at least 6 months.

Is King fit though? Thought he'd done his groin against Brum??

Corluka was sent off for Croatia so should be banned for the England game, which could be a blessing as at least he can't get injured :)

I did read that Bassong's injury isn't that bad so hopefully he'll be fit for Saturday.

Carlton Cole:

England Appearances: 4 (admittedly subs) Goals: 0

Wayne Rooney:

England Appearances 56 (i believe) Goals 24 (i believe)

Carlton Cole:

Club Appearances 185 Goals 39

Wayne Rooney: Club Appearances 320 Goals 119

Rooney's club form does look better but for me its a toss up between him and Defoe. For me you've got 4 combinations up front:

Rooney - Heskey
Rooney - Cole
Defoe - Heskey
Defoe - Cole

Playing Defoe and Rooney may work well, but given that both are natural finishers and Capello's insistence on a target man its unlikely to happen. Therefore, i'd like to see us mix it up a bit up front. Too many teams know what to expect from us and as good as a player as Rooney is, if he misses chances like those on Wednesday we could find ourselves up a certain creek without a paddle.

Ahh i hear you cry but recent form counts if you go off past form why don't we get geoff hurst blah blah blah

Failing to see the joke, why am I not surprised :p.

Carlton Cole:
England Goals in the last calendar year: *whistles*

Wayne Rooney:

England Goals in the last calendar year

15 10 September 2008 Zagreb, Croatia Croatia 4–1 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying
16 12 October 2008 London, England Kazakhstan 5–1 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying
17 12 October 2008 London, England Kazakhstan 5–1 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying
18 15 October 2008 Minsk, Belarus Belarus 3–1 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying
19 15 October 2008 Minsk, Belarus Belarus 3–1 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying
20 28 March 2009 London, England Slovakia 4–0 Win Friendly
21 28 March 2009 London, England Slovakia 4–0 Win Friendly
22 6 June 2009 Almaty, Kazakhstan Kazakhstan 4–0 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying
23 10 June 2009 London, England Andorra 6–0 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying
24 10 June 2009 London, England Andorra 6–0 Win 2010 World Cup qualifying

All but one of those games were against lesser opposition. Until recently Cole hasn't come in to his own as a player. I'd like to see him given a chance to properly prove himself at international level.

Carlton Cole: Club form this season

Appearances 4 (3 in league) goals 1 (1 in league)

Wayne Rooney: Club Form this season

Appearances 5 (4 in league) Goals 5 (4 in league)

Don't think these stats include last nights internationals.

'But if you play for a club like united you're bound to get more chances'

yes but there's a reason why a club like united wants to buy you in the first place and why you are consistently the first name on their team sheet and start ahead of other £30m+ players.

Although I agree that Rooney has scored more than Cole, I feel a Cole - Defoe partnership would work better with Cole playing as a target man and Defoe working off of him. It doesn't work with Heskey and Rooney. I'd suggest Cole and Rooney but Defoe is on fire at the minute.

gotcha so if a striker doesn't score in 1 game against a 'lesser' team then their form has slipped to the point where they could be replaced by someone who has 4 appearances and 0 goals to their name.

4 substitute appearances, your words not mine and I felt Cole looked very threatening during the 10-15 minutes he was given. I think we should give him and Defoe a chance. As someone else on here mentioned, maybe move Rooney on to the wing so he can run at people. I personally would like to see us mix it up rather than sticking with what is fast becoming a predictable team.

Crouch is also in the squad. Wether he'll get playing is another matter. For me, he should be ahead of Heskey who has done nothing of any note for club or country recently, but behind the other 3.

Thats a shout, and although he is a bit of a Donkey he does seem to find a lot of goals at International level. Saying that, they have been against lesser teams but I do agree he should be ahead of Heskey in the pecking order.

Heskey shouldn't even be in the squad, he's Plan Z when everyone else with an English passport has a broken leg. That includes Sunday pub teams and my good self...

Archie on Spurs Community:

Bassong He was taken off as a precaution and IS NOT injured. Not sure if he has another game though and if he will play.

Gomes will be back for Man U.... Harry may not risk him though

King- touch and go for man U

Woody will be fit but not match fit! May have to play dependent on others

Dawson another 2 weeks from now
