Weekend Football Thread. Internationals. *spoilers* 4-6

Rooney had a poor game but he should still start for england. Defoe deserves a starting place too. I'm still not convinced by the whole gerrard on the left thing. It'll be interesting to see what happens when joe cole starts playing again...

Not a great fan of Defoe and thought he'd been given enough chances to prove himself at International level after 30 odd games and a paltry 5 goals but he's done the business lately and deserves to start.

As for the Rooney or Cole debate, I don't see why it's even being discussed. An off form Rooney still offers more than Cole and at the moment, bar last night, Rooney has been on fire for club and country and should be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Yep, he was low on the list of England strikers a while back but since then he has made obvious progress as a striker and added much more to his game. Dependant on the system Capello plays, either Rooney or Defoe should be the first choice striker, as I do agree that Rooney and Defoe both starting may not be the best idea. Just want to see some initiative from Capello and start Cole and Defoe giving how well both have been playing for club and country. If Cole can polish his finishing, he will be very promising.

Defoe has been scoring whenever he's played for England, and deserves to replace the awful Heskey.

Rooney and Defoe up top, Rooney is one of Englands best players and should be starting.

I don't like seeing Gerrard playing wide left, Capello needs to pick him or Lampard to play with a more defensive midfielder (maybe Barry, although I'm not his biggest fan, probbaly Hargreaves when fit), why are we trying to accommodate Gerrard and Lampard, pick one. Barry could play left wing, but I'd rather see a natural wide man, Young or Cole when he's back fit.

Carlton Cole:

England Appearances: 4 (admittedly subs) Goals: 0

Wayne Rooney:

England Appearances 56 (i believe) Goals 24 (i believe)

Carlton Cole:

Wayne Rooney: Club Appearances 320 Goals 119

Ahh i hear you cry but recent form counts if you go off past form why don't we get geoff hurst blah blah blah

That's 10 in case the formatting bothers you.

Carlton Cole: Club form this season

Appearances 4 (3 in league) goals 1 (1 in league)

Wayne Rooney: Club Form this season

Appearances 5 (4 in league) Goals 5 (4 in league)

Don't think these stats include last nights internationals.

'But if you play for a club like united you're bound to get more chances'

yes but there's a reason why a club like united wants to buy you in the first place and why you are consistently the first name on their team sheet and start ahead of other £30m+ players.

He should be scoring plenty against teams like slovenia:

gotcha so if a striker doesn't score in 1 game against a 'lesser' team then their form has slipped to the point where they could be replaced by someone who has 4 appearances and 0 goals to their name.

Interested to see what he does with Lennon on Wednesday. He was a huge improvement over SWP when he came on but I do think Beckham still provides a lot. Also, don't want to see Lennon pick up an injury. :p

Beckham is past it. Nothing really to offer the first team, maybe an option against slower sides in the first half, but shouldn't be first choice.

He never had any pace, so I don't see how that effects it? He's the only Winger we have that can consistently put good balls into the box. Be it from Crossing, Corners or Freekicks. And I am willing to bet on him being physically fitter than most of the other players in the squad.

What I want to know is why Dos Santos isn't playing for Spurs. He's arguably in better form than any other player at WHL and that includes Defoe, Lennon or Modric (pre-injury)

Just come away from the South American Tournament as player of the tournament and then he's just scored an absolute beauty and 2 more assists in Mexico's 3-0 win the other day. If Rooney had done this yesterday, instead of falling over as usual, people may well have passed out in sheer awe of him..? :D

Goal @ 2:25 for 1-0
Brilliant team goal @ 3:25 for 2-0

You'll need to ask 'Arry about him.

I think Dos Santos is a wonderful player, he's still very young and should only get better.

@ Cas, Beckham shouldn't be near the first team, we have younger, quicker players who are able to play out wide, and many of them are improving the final ball in to the box. Maybe if we are allowed to bring him on for Free kicks ;) maybe, other then that, just keep him in the squad for back up and to help the younger English players.

Maybe too lightweight with him, Defoe, Keane and Lennon all in the team?

I think Beckham can still do a job for England, especially from dead balls and even more so if Crouch is playing. Sometimes when all else fails route 1 can be a very effective plan B. Especially if that plan involves players like Beckham and Crouch.... just ask Birmingham ;)

Might be lightweight, maybe he just feels he's not "ready" yet, or that in order to play he needs to bulk up a bit?

Beckham, I wouldn't consider for a wide place in the England squad, for his passing I'd prefer to play him centrally, but he's up against much better center midfielders there.

Green,

Cole, Terry, Rio, Richards(who has been superb since back at right back)
Rooney(right), Lampard, XXXXXXX, Young
Cole, Defoe

Just laughs at that team selection

Green who was lucky not to have had a card of some kind for handling outside his area, and then nearly giving away a penalty (remember this is against a below average int team to say the least)

Richards who was out for a good length of time last season and played shockingly when he was back (in a different position) - myabe in a dozen games fime for his club, no way now, even Wes Brown deserves to be considered if your method works!!

Putting the best english striker on the wing is just ridiculous, every Utd fan was screaming for him to be played central last season because he doesnt control games out there as much as he does centrally (let alone score as many) - complete waste of a huge talent

Completely ignored Gerrard (who is far better at the AM role than Lampard and gives more to the team in general) mind you at least you didnt put them together as that certainly doesnt work

Cole is a waste of space as a starter( Im presuming you mean Carlton) - Joe Cole has a place somewhere IF he can get fitness back, no doubt he willl, its just how long it will take him .

Defoe deserves to start and probably Young , Defoe has been on fire recently and seems to have stepped up to the plate this season so far, long may it continue (for country at least.....hope he has a duff game for his club next time out though :D), Young still needs to improve but has been doing ok

If Barry can play in the center, Beckham can play there with his eyes closed, and with one leg. Hes a far better player, even now. He should definitely be in the squad, and in the first team more than he is. But, Capello is the manager and I can't complain at how he is doing.

Barry is hugely over rated.
He's got a good cross on him, so he could play left side (as he started out left wing / back)

Hargreaves should be first choice, but he's dead at the moment.
