Weekend Football Thread. Internationals. *spoilers* 4-6

Although I see his qualities i'm still not sure why he's being picked over Defoe and Cole, who in my opinion should be starting. I felt we looked a lot more lively up front when they were on and although Cole didn't score, he looked more like he was going to than a guy who had twice missed from 2 yards out.

Because he................. scores more goals.
He scores more goals in the league, he scores more goals at international level.

He also gets more assists, and makes more tackles as well.

He is whats called a "better player" than Jermaine Defoe and a "vastly" better player than Carlton Cole.

would you perhaps like to drop ferdinand, terry and ashley cole and replace them with zat knight, bramble and nicky shorey as well?

He should get a ban for that to be honest.

I still have no idea what to make of it.

Looks like Rooney was holding the defender back, and then slides in and takes him out, off the ball, and gets a penalty.

I just can't work out why it was a penalty and not a card for Rooney.

It's not just that he got a penalty out of it, as you say he's tugging his shirt and then tackles him without getting the ball. Should be a freekick to the other team, end of the matter.

But to then claim for a penalty shows intent and for that alone he should get a 2 match ban like Eduardo. It's like players fouling someone and then feigning injury to try and get out of a foul/card.

As for the Rooney 'appeal', I think he was under the impression that the whistle had been blown against him, which I would understand to be fair.

He seemed to put his hands up as if to say 'what did I do wrong?' rather than 'Oi! ****ing penalty you ****' :D

I was completely confused to why it was a penalty, It looked like a card for Rooney and a free kick.

I couldn't understand why he claimed for a penalty, it was cheating to do so, (interesting given the "were too honest to cheat" outburst from Mr Lion heart best defender in the known universe Terry), who would ban him ? I'm not sure it is worthy of a ban, because you'd be giving them out willy nilly, in regards to people asking for corners / free kicks / throw ins every game.

It was just a strange, unexplainable decision.

Thats true, he did look surprised as anyone to get the penalty.
I'm not sure if he thought it was a foul for or against him.

Still can't understand why it was given :D

Like skippi90, I suspect his 'appeal' was more just the typical "I ain't dun nuffin', guv!" reaction you get from players after they've fouled someone and the ref blows up.

so you'd drop rooney who scored i think 10 goals in 7 england games last season mainly on the basis of missing a couple of chances in a friendly game?

Yes. If anything he should be scoring plenty against a team like Slovenia. He missed to golden opportunities and Defoe and Cole both managed to carve chances out of nothing. If we're going to play people based on their past achievements why don't we stick Geoff Hurst up front and see if Bobby Charlton wants to try to solve our midfield problem?

But he's playing rubbish at the minute. Beckham is one of the best crossers of the ball England has ever seen and yet during a bad spell a couple of years ago he was dropped. Cole and Defoe are playing extremely well for their club and country and are being shunned in favour of someone who in my opinion, doesn't deserve to be one of the first names on the teamsheet. If he improves, fine, bring him back but for me he was extremely poor last night.

agreed. carlton cole for rooney?

You've yet to provide any form of discussion. You also seem to me in the business of calling people "mate" when you obviously don't mean it . Atleast atpbx gave me the courtesy of a proper reply.
