Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 22nd-24th

Whether flukey is the right word or not, I don't know but they scored a deflected free-kick and were gifted a 3rd because of a ridiculous challenge by Gerrard. Other than a couple of breaks in the 2nd half when we were chasing the game they created nothing. I wouldn't say they defended too well either; it will get said they did because they held onto a lead but I can think of at least 3 free headers we missed from less than 10 yards out.

It was very much one of those games where everything seemed to go Villa's way.

I think they defended well to the point that they limited your chances, I honestly wouldn't say that any of the headers that Kuyt and Torres had were anything more than half chances. I cant think of any that were sitters so to speak

I didnt watch the game so Im going to TRY to be even handed

Looks like Liverpool are in crisis..........well just as much as Man Utd where after the defeat at Burnley ;) (admittedly Utd where away while Liverpool lost at home, but thats similar to last season)

Chelsea will dropa good ten points easy (ie more than what they now have on the board) - maybe / probably Liverpool and Utd will as well , maybe they wont who knows until the end of the season

Ok so it SHOULD have been a nailed on 3 pointer for the home side tonight - but its nothing drastic this early in the season, you (as a team) learn from the mistakes and move on - Im sure you will make up for it at the weekend whoever Liverpool play

Saying all that, maybe Alonso wouldnt have directly affected tonight's result but the confidence he brought to the side, the quality he instilled I think its not so wrong to blame his (huge) loss as a contributing factor to the loss of the game (considering AV havent beaten you in god knows how long)

edit - but shiver me timbers Well ******** done Aston Villa (however well or badly they actually played its the 3 points that matter most)

Free headers from no more than 10 yards out are half chances? Torres' one and the Kuyt one that hit the post should have been goals, the other Kuyt one you can half forgive. But a team that allows 4 unchallenged attempts on goal from that sort of distance couldn't have been defending too well.

edit: that's totally forgetting the scramble in the first half where had either Gerrard or Torres got the ball under control we could have scored 3 times over and when Benayoun walked into the box totally unmarked in the first minute when he headed wide.

Further to el-Dazza's ratings, I thought Habib Beye was very solid, along with the rest of the "back 5" - Shorey looked very comfortable tonight.

You can never question Reo-Joker's work ethic, but I just think the football embarrasses him at times. We need someone in there with an eye for goal - Stan's sitting deep, NRC isn't going to get many, and Sidders is hit and miss.

All this without our Talismatic Norweigan Mountain! up the villa! SOTC!

We were awful. It's not news to anyone but Rafa that Lucas isn't good enough to play in the prem, the same can be said for Babel and Veronin. The squad looks very shallow in midfield and upfront, which is obviously why we've used the last few days of the transfer window to buy another defender.

After all the talk about competition for places from Rafa over the years, it does seem strange that we’ve now realistically only got one player that can fill each position on the pitch.

The only Torres one I can remember was the one that Friedel tipped over at the end, I dont think that was a sitter and the Kuyt one he would have had to either get it inbetween the gap between Goalkeeper and the man on the post or head it back across the goal - I dont think that was a sitter either especially considering the point he headed it at. Maybe he should have tried volleying it

I really would like to rub in the fact that we won but I won't, as we really didn't deserve to win that. Fluke result, granted, but it happens sometimes, thankfully we were on the right end of one tonight.

Friedel - 8/10
Beye - 6/10
Cuellar - 7/10
Davies - 8/10
Shorey - 8/10
Milner - 7/10
Petrov - 7/10
Reo-Coker - 8/10
Sidwell - 7/10
Young - 9/10
Agbonlahor - 7/10
Got to disagree with that assessment - Young did good but nothing special, thought Friedel, Davies and Reo-Coker were the standout performers. Beye did good and was solid rather than spectacular...

Going forward he wasn't bad, but he was beaten far too easily for my liking. Strong he is, but it's only his 2nd game for us, so I can't be too harsh. I'm sure MON will turn him into a good player.

Reo-Coker works like a trojan but his tackles are so poor, gives away clumsy, cheap free-kicks too often and he's crap going forward. Petrov needs to play a more attacking role imo, it'd suit him. I'm impressed with Milner lately, his passing is superb and his ball control was excellent tonight. He's certainly shaping up to be the player he promised to be 2-3 years ago.

Hence why I gave them 8's! I think I was a tad generous with Young's rating but probably because his first few games were very poor by his standards and he upped his game well tonight, and clinched it with the winner.

Yes, Ashley wasn't at his best tonight to be fair. Our front apex were quite quiet and chased tails.

MOM - Friedel says it all.

For once we hung on.

A couple more additions this week, and perhaps we'll be ok.

As for Liverpool, thought they lacked a spark, Torres is becoming the new Ronaldo with all the petulance - quality quality player, but please stop flouncing - other than that, when Gerrard's off key, there's a real lack of inventiveness.

I agree with that...Milner looked fantastic as a nipper, but then seemed to not quite live up to his potential as he got older. Now though he seems right back on track to fulfilling that potential and I think he could well play a vital role in our attempt at the World Cup.

Torres probably isnt getting enough sleep, I know I barely slept during my daughters first months :)

Torres has been argueing with officials ever since we signed him, that's got nothing to do with his performance. He just doesn't look sharp, similarly to half of our side.

The Liverpool squad have got swine flu, its the only possible explanation for that abnormal and lethargic display.

Apart from Masch and Johnson, everyone else looked lethargic, had a bad touch, total lack of awareness, lack of discipline and just looked like they had no desire at all. While individually our defenders played well in outfield play, together and in set pieces they where erratic on many occasions.

It was a very weird game since the start, I cant explain what it was, there was just this air of oddness about the whole team that didn't look right. To me the strangeness of the game was summed up by the insane super lunge Gerrard did inside the box. What the hell? When does Gerrard ever do such rash things like that?

Masch had most of the ball and was our play maker, especially second half. While I think he had a good game compared to the rest of the squad, he hasn't got the quality to make those decisive passes. During the first 20-30mins, Benayoun was dropping back (sometimes as deep as the centre back line) to get the ball, but after that he caught the disease from Gerrard and Kuyt and his head dropped, then suddenly a rift appeared between Masch and the forward players leaving him to do all the "spreading and feeding" for the attackers which everyone knows he's not that type of player.

While I don't say that we're missing "Alonso" individually, I can understand why people would think it. However it is as clear as daytime that we lacked quality where there was none, in Lucas' position (where Alonso/quality player would have been.) We need this Aqualini to hurry and get fit and hope that he's a midfielder that can bridge defense and attack as it just wasn't there today.

I read someone say earlier that Liverpool played well defensively... I must have been watching another game. OK Carra and Skrtel where good individually, but as a whole we where stretched numerous times and could have (especially against a more lethal team) been more goals down. We looked erratic and disorganized on many occasions, and dont get me started on set-pieces or crosses.

At the end of this ***** day, Villa took advantage of our weird state by playing well defensively and by being disciplined and hard working. All of which we where not.

If their is any truth in the Van Der Vaart rumours then I hope for goodness sake it happens because even if Lucas was up for the challenge of filling in until Aqualini gets fit, his already fragile confidence has just well and truly been destroyed. He honestly, without malice or finger pointing, played utterly **** today. It was terrible... and yet, I dont blame him, he shouldn't be put in that position of responsibility and pressure in the first place because he's not good enough. Its that simple.

I want Torres and Gerrard to look at their performance today because if they think thats good enough to win trophies then they need a reality check.

You on about Beye? Why would MON need to turn him into a good player, he;s already a very good player.

There is only one man to blame for the sad state of Liverpool and that is the Fatman.

We only got to within sniffing distance of the mancs last season because we won so many poor games due to the other team having a player sent off and then eventually fluking a win.
There is only one team who can Bore their way to a Premiership and that is Chelsea.
Come on Rafa I have been sick and tired of your negative erratic style of play for a few years now. It is stifling the team and the genuine good players we got.

Lucas, Kuyt, what does he see in them. It seems that if you run around a lot and "work hard" you are a Liverpool great.

If your gonna throw the league away again Rafa at least do it in a way that provides some entertaining football to watch.
Noel Gallagher said following Man City was like enduring "30 years of Pain"
Well I can sympathise with him as i have done 20 already !
