Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 22nd-24th

The same fat man that took you to two European Cup finals, and to within a few points of winning the league last season.

Fans have very selective memories at times.

While I don't think Rafa is a great manager, nor do I think Liverpool are as good as people make them out to be, I don't write them off after 3 games.

That's not a biased opinion much :p

It's got nothing to do with bias. O'Neill hasn't bought him because he's a promising youngster he can mould. He bought him because he's an established player and one of the better RBs in the league. He's coming up to his mid-thirties, he's hardly gonna learn much more in his career.

The Law Of Newcastle decrees that you can often be a very good player, but when it comes to playing for the geordies, you will inexplicably become dire and concede goals regularly.

See also: Titus Bramble; Sebastien Bassong; Shay Given.

EDIT: Also, are we actually trying to set a record for how quickly we can count our chickens this season? Three games in and Spurs are amazing, Liverpool are never going to win the title, Arsenal are the best thing since sliced bread, and Man Utd are both dire and finished, and awesome and resurgent, in equal measure. Jesus wept, give me some perspective here people.

Well I was at work for the match tonight unfortunately, was reading in on the reports on BBC, everything seemed to be going for L'pool and was waiting for the goal to happen, but to my surprise was the other way.

Made my night at work far better, after our usual crap I thought after Torres goal we would crumble, we aren't the best at holding it together. Especially against the big teams.

Definitely doesn't sound like a great match for either team, but a fantastic result for Villa none the less. A win against Liverpool has been long coming in my years as a fan :D

I don't know, I'm just referring to the fact that when United lose, the vast majority of Liverpool fans turn into trolls, so unfortunatley, that's just the way forums are :(

United, if Ferguson insists on playing players out of position, and continually tries to shoehorn the woeful Park and the past it Giggs into the same side, and if he doesnt reinforce the midfield, defence and strikeforce will NOT finish any higher than third.
The only reason I can see that he wont spend (or more probably cant), is that this is most probably his last season and he is operating under certain spending constraints.
Because it certainly isnt because the squad is strong enough.

As for liverpool loosing, a loss is a loss, and thats 2 in only three games, doesnt leave a lot of room for title winning.

Shocking game last night Villa flooded the middle of the park, simple as that.

And from last night it is clear as crystal which player Liverpool missed. :(

Come back Xabi.

The only *shock* result so far this season is Man.U's loss to Burnley.
Chelsea & Arsenal would be expected to win the games they've played so far every season whilst Liverpool's 2 losses have been v teams who are regarded as being capable of beating anyone on their day.
There's been far too few games to make any real calls and it won't be until the 'Big 4' play each that you'll have an idea who's doing what:)

No you wont, not really.

Liverpool beat all of them last season and ended up with nothing all that Benitez managed with Liverpool last season was to make them as good in the league as they were under Houllier . Chelsea have beaten most of them or drawn with them for the past 3 years and not won a title.
Big 4 games are harder, with a higher chance of loosing, but loosing to the likes of Burnley and or Villa at home are games that should be won routinely.

Whilst watching the Liverpool game last night, it did make me laugh how they were almost writing Liverpool off out of the title race, and I bet the same thing was said of Man Utd last season, and look how that finished.

I'm not saying who wins those games will actually win anything just that it'll give you an idea of where a team is.
It was painfully obvious when we got outclassed at OT last season and beaten twice by Liverpool that we were never going to be in contention for the league.

Aye, the reason I'm refusing to consider Arsenal's start as that good is that we've played two utterly woeful defences (one by form, one by standard). If we can take it to Man Utd as well as we did in those games, then I might get a bit more excited about things.

Man Utd always start slow though, its expected now and not a big deal, I am surprised that we have won 2 of the 3 really, I was expecting 1 win and 2 draws so 6 points instead of 4 is great news.

Liverpool will now be on the back foot because Raffa will be rattled now, the next couple of games for them are double important.
