Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 3-5

As for Drogba yes, as a Chelsea fan, I agree his antics are pathetic. Unfortunately it is a part if his personality and we just have to live with it

We only have to live with it because the powers that be cant be bothered to do anything about it (not only Drogba, but across the game of football). Instead they mask it with words like "simulation" and "exaggeration", instead of simply saying Cheating. Just look at how careful the commentators were to avoid saying it, they desperately searched around for descriptions, ending with such things as "he has great recuperative powers" and "its a part of his game"...so worried are they that they might get sued for slander.

Its not just Drogba of course, our own Gerrard is another who seems to be strong as a ox yet suspiciously hits the ground when a 5ft 5, 7 stone player comes near at times. Theres more still...and it will only get worse and worse.

More and more "professional" players will realise that a free kick here, a yellow card there, can turn a game into a victory and hell...if nobody is going to do anything about it and everyone else is at it, why not join them eh.

Having said that, I am pretty much alone in wanting the game to be stricter, wanting a more professional match of football and standards. Most people disagree with me and say "but then what would we talk about, its part of what makes it exciting". Me...I prefer to talk about the actual football and I find the playing of the football more exciting than the playing of the ref, but thats just me.

The refs are just as much to blame as the governing bodies
Mascherano's farcical dive right in front of the ref when Essien almost touched him was the worst of the game and a blatant yellow card yet the ref bottled it and just told him to get up.
He knew he dived, there was no ifs or buts about it so it has to be a yellow and if the officials are going to let players get away with it when it's as obvious as that there's no chance of stamping it out.

Which begs the question, what have Liverpool been?

Poor, they miss Alonso, can't believe Rafa forced him out.

I think they've actually gone backwards this season, they've failed to strengthen the team / squad.
Manchester United, are weaker with the loss of Ronaldo, but have got good players in.
Chelsea more or less the same.
Spurs have gotten better.
Arsenal have improved.
Manchester City have improved.

L'pool have definitely gone backwards, last season they were excellent at times, it seems as though they've forgotten last season and gone back to the inconsistent team of years gone by where they rely on Torres/Gerrard, last season was just a random blip I think

Expectations were raised without winning the league.

Liverpool, found some real form and in my opinion punched well above their weight towards the end of last season.

The problem lies this season, Liverpool haven't improved the squad, they've done the opposite. Rafa is still buying these "£3 million" players who amount to nothing.

Liverpool's best buy was Johnson, who was what they needed, he might of been over priced and frail defensively but he's a massive boost and offers something they've lacked from that position.

They then, went backwards, losing Alonso (all down to Rafa's flirting with a inferior player last season) and they've still not improved the area's that needed improving.

Just my two cents, Liverpool are still a good side, but they're really up against it this season. Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Spurs are all in the running for the champions league, plus Manchester United / Chelsea, who I can't see dropping out of the top four.

Well I think there are two crunch matches coming up within about a month of the end of the international break which could indicate how Chelsea / Man Utd and Liverpool end up this season (and its both of the others against Man Utd - I know one is at Anfield but cant remember if the Chelsea game is OT or SB)

The Anfield one comes first, and with Rooney possibly out (due to Colleen giving birth) Utd are really up against it if he doesnt play - we have scored a reasonable amount of goals but Owen isnt going to be fit enough (even if he was the right person to start which is questionable), and Giggs who is in brilliant form is better off playing either wide or in central midfield

Both sets of defenders are completely **** at the moment they really are, at least Utd's saving grace should be that VdS should be back by then. Liverpool could easily rip us apart again as they did at OT last season - it also depends on fitness of other crucial players and team selection also (you never know what bizarre combination SAF "5 minutes of injury time" and Rafa "Facht" Benitez are going to come up with)

If Utd lose at Anfield, however well or badly they play, the Chelsea game really becomes a crunch match, as it seems currently even when they play badly they manage to win (ok excluding one result) - Utd esp are lucky to escape with a draw. If Utd lose both matches I think it could well become a dogfight between Liverpool / Arsenal / Utd and even City (spits out that dirty name ;))

Arsenal and Liverpool have a tendency to really be able to get huge results even if they concede two or three, Man Utd are rarely able to score the same 4 or five extra goals to kill off teams

Who are these ""£3 million" players" you speak of?

Diego Cavalieri
Alvaro Arbeloa
Sebastian Leto
Jose Miguel Gonzalez Rey (Josemi)
Gabriel Paletta
Sotirios Kyrgiakos
Mark Gonzalez

Non of them have really been good enough, why not stop signing these quality of player and buy one really good player?

He's spent £210 million, he's had more then enough money to bring together a good squad but this year he's gone backwards.

He's spent £210m?

So how the hell is the squad so crap? That's pretty crazy tbh!

You'd expect a bit more for 210 million.

I like Rafa, and I think he's made a couple of good buys, Torres is his most expensive player at 20 million.
Alberto Aquilani at 20 million again, who I'm not sure about, he's injury prone and the Premier League is fast and hard tackling so he might turn out to be a bit of a "if only".
Keane and Johnson at 15 million and 16 million, I thought Keane was an odd buy, but I felt he never was really given a fair shot at the team. Johnson is a good player, tad expensive but gives them something the team has lacked.

Babel cost 10 million
Kuyt at 9, Riera was 8. I like Kuyt, not so sure on Riera he's not really impressed me much, he does give them width though.

Dossena was 8 million (what happened to this guy?)
Lucas, Squirtle, Reina, Agger, Yossi were all between 7 and 5 million, and are good players, Reina is a good keeper.

Crouch, Leto, Pennant, Bellamy, Alonso, Sissoko, Morientes, are some other guys that have moved on.

Total Buys 210,425,000

Total Sales 139,730,000
