Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 3-5

I think we're looking at Rui Patricio at Sporting going by a few rumours, don't know anything about him though. Surely if we sign another keeper both Foster and PIG will be looking to move on?

So? Poor performances should just be excused then? In the reverse then, should Pompey not bother celebrating a win because they're still bottom?

There is nothing wrong with complaining about a bad game, but most of Atpbx's posts are complaining about the team as a whole. That's completely different to complaining about a performance.

Well on most of the United forums, people seem to want Manuel Neuer or Igor Akinfeev. None of whom I know much about and whether our fans are simply plucking these names from FM or they are actually United class...well remains for me to be seen.

Buffon and Casilles would be great buys, but the former I guess may be to old and the later will not want to leave Real Madrid now. Who knows Gomez at spurs can be world class at times and may be worth a punt (or not..)

With PIG I don't mind him as a second choice as he seems happy collecting his wages and sitting on the bench, no where near 1st standard though.

EDIT - atpbx does say decent stuff now and again, but he only comments when United lose :) very rarely does he say anything positive. Buffon isn't as old as I thought, and has expressed a desire to move on, we should sign him!

I'd love to see Buffon at United, a keeper I've always admired more than any other. 31 really isn't that old for a keeper, if we could get him for under 15m then that would be a great bit of business imo.

Us United Fans are indeed very spoilt, we have won the prem 3 times in a row, been to the last two Champs leagues finals and yet we love a good moan when we lose. I'd hate to support someone like Spurs, i'd be a wreck :).

I think SAF will go with an older Keeper, more experience in handling pressure, less likely to crumble if he makes a mistake as often we tend to get on the backs of younger keepers if they **** up ala Howard and Foster. Remember Schmeichel was pretty old when he came to United so I would not be suprised at all to see Buffon.

I can't believe how everyone is saying Nani was bad/should be shot when he was far better than Welbeck, Fletcher and Scholes  not to mention how poor Rooney was.

In the end Fergie lost us that

1. Starting Welbeck over Valencia, Anderson, Tosic and Giggs
2. Dropping Giggs completely
3. Rotating our central midfield AGAIN
4. Not having a striker on the bench, is he a moron? What's wrong with Macheda

This I don't get, Giggs is 478, he's played a lot for him recently, play him again and with higher chances of being injured, risk him being gone for the year, over what "should" have been one of the easier games. Anderson sucks and isn't a winger, Giggs needed a break, I wouldn't start a midget in Tosic in one of his first real games against a physical side, and Valencia, showed as little today after he came on as he's shown since the season started tbh and thats very very little, but again this "should" have been a routine game if Scholes/Nani/Rooney/Fletcher/o'shea/vidic/ferdy/foster shown up, which they didn't.

I don't think he made any critical errors tbh, all his reasons were understandable and while a risk had it paid off and left Giggs available for a tougher game he was instrumental in, most on here would be licking his balls for great man management and getting the best out of an OAP.

Sometimes it goes wrong, but thats one thing UTD can say, and this is where I harp on about being great being unimportant, not being bad is the key to winning. Most of your players are rarely that bad, the chance of them all having their worst game of maybe the last few years all on the same day, are very very close to zero, but, eventually, it will happen.

He could have made changes earlier and I still think the TEAM would be better with Rooney/Valencia as established, form, playing every game wingers, with Berbs/Owen forming a partnership. Valencia isn't close to a replacement for Ronaldo, starting to think 16mil was about 8mil too much for him. Rooney has shown time and time again last year, that he's 10 times the winger that Nani is, and welbeck, anderson or whoever else you want to smash out there. Owen's scored, looks sharp and Berbatov plays better with more smart runners going into the box, his game is all about getting the ball early and picking the right pass to the right player in behind the defence, with Valencia/Rooney from deeper and Owen up top, he'll have options all over the place.

UTD need a real winger, another striker, or two, a CB and a real keeper.

ALso yes, the quality of the prem seems absurd, Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea, Pool seem to put in far more "poor" games a year than 5 years ago, I mean games where they just flat out suck, truly great games seem further and further apart.

Shocking result, I was getting so frustrated watching it. I've never seen United pass to badly, everyone was awful really.

Rooney didnt find a man in the first half, and well Foster may have made his final apperance in a United shirt, he just does not have the mental steel to play for such a club.

You would have been ****** without Van Der Sar, scary to think you rely on a guy that is nearly 40, Fergie will have to spend big or pluck some unknown out of the nowhere.

drunkenmaster long posts about Arsenal are bad enough but about other teams, pipe down.
drunkenmaster is a football manager trapped in a IT tech body.

One thing about Valencia, he played every game at Wigan, he goes to United for £16 million and gets left out of games, one way to put down a guys spirits.

Damn DM, I actually agree with some of that which makes a change, not all mind.

I'm not sure we need a new CB, last year everyone was proclaiming we had the best defence in the world, but we had VDS in the sticks and he just oozes confidence allowing the back 4 to not get tense when passing back to him. A dedicated RB may be nice but I have high hopes for Rafeal and I'd rather Brown plays than o'shea there.

On a positive it was refreshing to see Sunderland actually attack us, coming to OT with 2 upfront is risky but it paid off, they were the better team. If more teams do this against the top 4 there will be many more "shock" results. I really hope it means an end to teams closing up shop as most of the time these teams will lose anyway if they play that way. Attack us and you have a chance + it's more entertaining.

I think Valencia has been fine so far. He could work on his finishing a bit (both the miss today and the one against Stoke should have at least forced a save) but I really like his work down the wing, beats his man regularly and wins the ball back more than i thought he would. He's never going to be another Ronaldo, if people are expecting that then they're being ridiculous.

Not the team as a whole, players who are not good enough, or just plain lazy.
We have good players, and some great ones.

We also have some utter dross and some that should be sent off to the glue factory.

Arsenal, Chelsea and liverpool can manage to find a couple of dedicated right backs each, WTF are we doing playing John O'****?

Arsenal and Chelsea manage to have an abundance of midfielders who can run about a bit and pass the ball, we dont have any that do any running, and only two that can pass a ball.

Liverpool and chelsea both have quite good first choice keepers, in their 20's who dont look like they are wetting themselves with fright every time they take to the pitch, where is ours? ( Cech is 27, Reina is 27, Foster is 26) Foster isnt **** because he is young, he is **** because he is ****.

United have a weak midfield, they have replaced one of the finest attacking wingers the world has ever seen with a player that is beyond average and they have extremely limited attacking options.

Mabye I am spoilt, but what I would'nt give for Van Nistelrooy, Keane, Stam, Sheringham, Schmeichel and even Beckham to be in their prime and playing for the club again.

We have been spoilt, for years, that's the problem.

We demand excellence and have seen it far too much lately.

Remember what we were like in the 80's, that's what I do.

You have been spoilt for to long, goal keeper wise VdS has kept you wining big time also, how old are you, to remember the 80s I think you are about 36 from your love of adidas

why would you remember that ? football wasn't invented till 1992 :p

BOLLLLLLLLL :D

Line up killed yesterday without a doubt

Evans is a decent centre half, definitely United quality he just needs to play in a settled line up for a few games (Im getting really ***** with Rio's constant injuries / fitness issues)

OShea is a decent squad player but no way in the world should he be first choice, Rafael / Fabio should have played instead and as for Wes Brown, Fergie keeps on wanting to play him centrally for some reason (even though he a really decent rfb)

1st half was really carp, the passing was atrocious and Nani was plainly awful - sell him anytime, loan him out whatever just stop playing him PLEASE!!!

(Even an unfit Hargreaves would be a better winger than Nani - and contribute more to the team)

Barba's goal was brilliant and we had a lucky escape, 2nd half was much better especially when Anderson and Carrick came on

OK I admit it Foster will never make it at Man Utd - we need TWO decent keepers ASAP (after all VdS isnt going to go on for much longer) and PIG isnt up to much either

Sunderland played well and where more than deserving of the 2 goals (still think there was a handball in the 1st half though against Sunderland) and where unlucky to only get a point, but Richardson does his usual and thats why £5.5m was a good sale a few years ago;)

I think fergie having a rant at the ref is more about covering up the fact his team selection probably cost him the points yesterday..he showed sunderland a lack of respect and thought the changes he made wouldnt make a difference against us

but our 2 strikers are in form and will both score a good few goals this season all we have to do is not ship as many!
