Weekend Football Thread **Spoilers**

Just got back from Hillsborough, thank god the football season is back!

To be fair Wednesday hammered us in the first half, they got the ball down well and played some nice stuff. Having said that we still had 2-3 chances and if it wasn't for Grant we could well have had a goal.

Second half was a totally different story, Wednesday were complacent and we took advantage of that. Whilst still not being anything particularly special (my god why does Davey still pick Odejayi?) we managed to convert two of our chances and in the end there only looked like there was going to be one winner.

I've totally lost my voice and I've spent a bit too much on beer but I'm so happy to have something to do on a weekend now! :D

Just got back from meadow lane. Was fantastic! Sven has definatly had an affect. We actually passed the ball around instead of hoofing it up, we have some real quality players aswell. Hughes got a hat trick and rogers was brilliant. Forest fans we have one of your lads on loan maloney, scored the best goal of the game an played fantastic keep an eye on him.

45 games ahead for Newcastle with a paper thin squad. Things are not looking good for them unfortunately though I did think they did quite well today. I couldn't believe the stat today that Smith hasn't scored a league goal in 4 years. That is quite shocking.

Smith played his best game for us since he arrived today. His shooting is still **** but he looks like a good captain.

The small squad, whilst it does need strengthening, isn't as bad as some pundits have made out.

There's quite a lot of youngsters who've impressed loads recently who, whilst wouldn't be good enough for the PL, should do OK in the Championship.

The likes of Lua Lua, Ranger, Baheng, Vuckic, Kadar and Krul as he showed today.

Back from Hillsborough :/

Pleased that the football season has started nice to get it underway :D

Wednesday were fantastic, brilliant in the first half, due much to how utter **** the dingles were. Played well, and Grant made a couple of decent saves but I never thought the dingles looked like getting a goal in the first half. We got two, could have had a third or fourth, same goes for them in the second half though. We passed and moved really well first half.

alas, "a tale of two halves" Wednesday looked too relaxed, complacent and basically took their foot off the pedal, which is something they did a lot last season :(

The dingles were much better second half, don't think they played good football, but they played to their strengths, a lot of high balls in to the area and got forward well, complete dominated a pathetic Wednesday second half.

A draw was a fair result, Wednesday were brilliant and the dingles **** first half.
Wednesday were **** and the dingles miles better second half.

Some of the dingles players really didn't look bothered about playing either, Franny was pretty ineffective to say the least against that beast of a center back the dingles have (moore ? is that his name ? crap footballer, but you'll never get past / round him and you won't beat him in the air, esp not Jeffers who just can't head a ball to start with and is so weak a wet paper bag could contain him)

Back from Hillsborough...

I would agree with the majority of that :p

Moore is a beast, anything in the air he will eat up for breakfast but anything on the floor and he's a nightmare. Similar to what Purse is for you I would say.

I was annoyed at JCR in particular regarding how quiet he was, considering he's meant to be our star man and all.

Your best players were Gray and Grant imo, those saves from Macken in the first half were both beauties.

It was an enjoyable game though overall and it definitely summed up the saying "a game of two halves".

Fair play to Leeds today Jermaine Beckford is far too good for League 1. The best striker in this league by a country mile.

Unfortunately couldn't make the game today but have spoken to mates who went and apparently we played really well. Got battered for the first 15-20 minutes then settled down and played some good stuff. Red card seems to have been for foul & abusive language and wasn't for elbowing as reported by the beeb.

Despite losing I'm proud of the lads today and it wasn't quite the double figure beating that the Leeds fans on WACCOE seemed to expect.

Here's a link to the matchday thread on the Exeter forums if anyone's interested - obviously expect the reports to be slightly biased!!

He gives people that impression, but even as a Leeds supporter i have to agree with the words of this news piece: http://www.skysports.com/fanzone/blogs/story/0,24015,16661_5476808,00.html

In particular:
Meanwhile, Jermaine Beckford seems to have realised that his chronic inability to find the net at any ground other than Elland Road will prevent anyone bigger than Doncaster looking at him as a serious option, and has been attempting to worm his way back into our affections by celebrating his pre-season goals with a frenzy of badge-pointing.

I still strongly feel that Jermaine beckford is not the way forward for leeds united, but im overjoyed by the fact robert snodgrass (our TRUE best player) has signed a new 4 year contract, i reckon grella could be a better striker than beckford all round but he just needs to find his feet

I agree, Moore is a beast in defence but only when the opposing team play to his strengths, for example launching the ball down the center, in which he can pressure (and foul a lot :p) and generally get his rather massive face to the ball.

Purse is decent in the air, we have Beevers and Wood who are much better technically and much quicker. A presence in the air is something that we have lacked.

JCR didn't really notice him at all, which is a surprise because he was the stand out man last year in the same fixture. I didn't think much to anderson, he looked awful and very nasty in the tackle and fairly average on the ball.

Gray is a decent player, much better this season partly due to the fact we have an almost fully fit side. He is as a result able to play a much more free role. Johnson was brilliant first half but a lack of service and been marked in to the ground in the second half made his performance very very average. Grant was his normal self, which means nothing short of brilliant :D

Good atmosphere, you lot were loud second half and quiet first, vise versa for us. Good game, enjoyed it, always a good natured friendly :]

Anderson is different class imo, he's makes so much time for himself on the ball. Today wasn't his best performance, but from the away end that booking he got for going up with Grant in the air looked harsh to me.

I don't really think Beevers is all what he's cracked up to be either. A lot of people rave about him but he seems like he hasn't progressed that much in the last season or so after he emerged well to begin with. I know he only came on as sub (and up front) today though.

The support from us was crap once we went 2-0 down but we had nothing to cheer about really, that was the worst half of football I've seen us play in a long, long time.

Second half was mental though, especially after the goals. I really thought we would nick it in the end as well.

But aye was a good match and a nice way to kick off the season. A lot of my mates support Wednesday so it was great to meet them outside the ground after and have a talk (gloat ;)) about it.

Just gonna watch the highlights now on BBC1 :)
