Weekend Football Thread *spoilers*

Stop changing your argument to try and get out of your nonsense statement that they've not changed since joining Liverpool.

Torres was not one of the best players in the world before joining us. He had a huge reputation because he broke into Atletico's side so early but he hadn't progressed anywhere near as much as expected in his time there. Not only is he a far better player now but the way in which he plays is very different to how he played at Atletico too, something he's said himself and put down to Benitez. To go from averaging 15 goals a season to scoring 33 in his first season with us is a ****ing impressive natural progression if you ask me.

Regardless if you'd heard of Reina or not (and I still doubt many would have known much of him as Villarreal aren't/weren't regularly shown on Sky), you seriously can't say that Riena has not progressed. Even if you hadn't seen him before joining us, you only have to compare him from when he signed to now, he's got better every year and still is getting better.

edit: Torres' goalscoring record before and after joining us:
Before - 243 games and 91 goals
After - 96 games and 60 goals.

Not really sure what to make of this Sunday. We're still missing a good few players and as far as I'm aware, so are Liverpool.

There's has been a contentious issue or two the last few times we've played Liverpool, and to be honest, I don't expect that to change nor for them/it to be in our favour. Won't call a result, anything can happen.

I agree about Torres though, when he signed and saw his record I didn't think he'd be such a hit.
Nor did I. I said he'd be an expensive flop multiple times and thought Bent would've been a far better buy :o

I'm happy to listen to anybodies point of view but what I don't appreciate are the little digs at me personally. I have not come into (or indeed created) this thread to make personal attacks on people and I don't expect it done to me in return either.
Apologies. While I don't agree with your opinion on Babel I didn't mean to be so rude.

He has a different role at Liverpool, he's a goal scorer at Liverpool, at Athletico he was a start in a fairly average side, he came to Liverpool and joined a better side and as a result, improved, as playing in a better side often brings the best out of players, taking the pressure of their individual game. Torres isn't doing all the work at 'Pool.

I fully accept he's improved, but I think he would have naturally progressed tbh, he could have walked in to most top teams in Europe, and done very well. (Real, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Barca, Bayern, Milan ect ect)

I'd heard of Reina, and Villarreal funnily enough. Not like there some nothing team from a nothing league. Reina has improved, one of the better keepers in the League, but his only problem is that guy from Real Madrid.

And when you look more into the actual goals you will see that he is playing in a lot more competitions in england. To say Torres was not world class before he came to liverpool is a joke. Ive known about him for a good five years and I dont even follow spainish football much.

No one is saying he hasnt improved as a player but I dont think that would have been any different if he went to Man Utd or somewhere else. Actually I think he would have been even better at somewhere like Man Utd or Arsenal

If you read what i was replying to then you'd see that somebody did say Torres hadn't improved, which is why I posted.

You use the term world-class very loosely if you think Torres was world-class at Atletico. He had a huge reputation which he had never lived up to and had stood still in the previous few seasons.

Also, I love the made up logic that Torres is averaging 2 goals every 3 games instead of a goal every 2.7 games is because there are more competitions in England :D :p

Well if you read what i wrote then you wont find anything about me mentioning anything to do with goals per game. I mentioned it because if you minus the goals from the cups and eurpean games that he didnt play in spain then his scoring isnt that much better than before.

With the better supply from Gerrard and Alonso, someone with his natural talent is obviously going to get more goals.

I dont think you can say liverpool have made him into a world class player. more they gave him the tools to help him perform better.

It would be interesting if someone could dig up chances per goal stats, which would give a better idea of what has made him score more goals. Do you know that?

Yeah, I'd agree with the above. Torres was a good player when he was at Atletico. Liverpool didn't make him into a great player from youth prospect although playing in one of the best teams in the world along with the constant Champions League exposure has definitely helped him.

I was waiting until the end for him to say " I was verrry, verrry, drunk." :D

Edit: What a gooooooaaaal!

Figueroa I think. What a strike!
