** Weekend Football Thread **

Oh dear, just realised our next game is away to Utd where they could win the league. Were going to get demolished there, someone got a gun I can shoot myself with?

It's not going to be pretty really.

I remember Arsene Wenger saying on the TV, shortly after winning the double in 2002, that his Arsenal side could dominate English football for the next ten years.

What went wrong?

He was only really competing with Ferguson at that point. Chelsea were just about to get a blank cheque book via Abrahmovic, and Liverpool a few years later a lot to spend through new ownership as well. This meant that both sides realistically entered into the title race.

Meanwhile, we've built a new stadium and ownership is mostly split between an American and Jabba from Star Wars. Neither of whom are in a position to get their wallet out.

In terms of footballing reasons, last summer was disastrous for Wenger. He let us remain with a small squad, with players of the type that will get injured frequently. In the past he's tended to go with bought in quality, and let our younger other players he didn't feel were good enough go; for example, Pennant, Bentley, Upson etc. Now he's being forced to play them and find out they're not good enough. A player like Cesc is only going to come along every ten years at least...

Yet again Arsenal were woeful, from the last chance again our DM fails to follow the midfield runner. If you watch the replay Denilson is following Malouda, though behind him AGAIN, then he just stops, ignores him, watches him run in behind and score. Pathetic, it was all pathetic.

ADebayor barely tried at all, barely even a jog to close people down or the keeper. Bendtner from much further back was running further and faster to stop the keeper peeing about. He's always been this pathetic, again when he was played through he dived, he dived twice in this game and frankly should have gotten 2 yellows for it. Bendtner yet again dropped after a semi decent performance against Man U(only decent player for arsenal on the pitch frankly), after he was dropped for a great performance against Boro, came on and was a real threat, instantly. movement was great, tracked back, won the ball, won tackles, played people in, created chances, scored.

Song, Denilson, Diaby were all utterly pathetic, the second goal came when Song decided, as the DM< to first put pressure on Terry for no reason at the edge of his box, who passed to Cech. Song closed cech down, who kicked it up the field and Anelka ran through a HUGE Song shaped hole in our midfield to be unmarked, unchallenged and scored a good goal. Those three are simply incapable of defending, all year long are defensive weaknesses are the DM, not the actual defenders. Hell, Silvestre was actually very good today, Gibbs, Sagna even did better than he has done recently.

Walcott yet again, when played in behind looked dangerous though far too many of his shots were simply from too wide a position, he needs to be a striker, and more central. ANytime he got the ball on the wing with players to actually beat he looked like a pathetic little girl, incapable of beating his man, awful touch.

Dreadful performance, dreadful team selection, awful substitutions, Wenger needs to go.

This was a MUST WIN game, 2-0 down, desparate for a change at half time and he waited, again, till another goal was conceded, till it was too late, then brought on the wrong people(ish). Bendtner on at half time and it might have ball been different, Ade coming on was a waste, as was Denilson, Eboue who is a real driving force going forward, strong defensively, pace. No bring on the hopeless going forwards, hopeless defensively, no pace Denilson, that will surely bring us 3 goals back.

Embarassed to say the least, we conceded 4 against pool, but for a ridiculous game by Arshavin we would have been smashed. 4 against Man U in the CL, but for a poor first leg could have been 8/9-1 in total. 4 against Chelsea, I'm embarassed, and now think theres no way back for Wenger, the board HAVE to fire him before next year.

RVP, I will hold no grudges and wish him all the best if he doesn't sign a contract and smegs off in the summer, same for Fabregas, frankly they deserve better.

TBH its about time Arsenal fans starting getting on Wenger's/The Board's back for the underachievement of the Gunners.

All I've heard for the past 5+ years is that the "kids" will come good and Arsenal will dominate, broken record now me thinks.

If things don't change soon at the Emirates then the likes of Aston Villa and Everton could soon catch up even more.

Why does Drogba insist on taking so many free-kicks? Not only is he one of strongest players in the league in the air but he can't cross to save his life either.

Did you see who crossed in the ball for Alex's goal?

Fabregas had another woeful game today.

Tummy did you like Mikel's ball through for Chelsea's 3rd goal? :D

I'm by no means complaining but Wenger made a massive mistake (or two) today by leaving Adebayor & Bender out of the starting line up, he probably had his reasons but **** knows what they might be, it's not as if he needs to rest them for anything :/

Cech had another good game, he seems to be over his wet patch now & apart from that there's very little to take from the game except 3rd place I guess.

I wouldn't say Cech had a great game, one thing he came out to catch and it went flying out but no where dangerous. But in reality the only shot on target in the first half was at a stupidly tight angle and Walcott smacked it where he could which was into Cech, other than that he wasn't tested.

As for Wenger making a mistake not starting Ade, what exactly did he do when he came on that gave you the idea he would have made a difference. Honestly any longer than he got and he would have been sent off, he SHOULD have been yellowed twice for two very very blatant dives. The first he was played through his touch was awful, took it away from him, he felt the slightest contact and threw himself spinning to the ground. The second, he kicked it out, hell he might even have gotten to the ball but diving seemed easier so down he went.

other than that he was useless, as always, and as always jogged around without a care in a world laughing inside that he'll get paid 80k this week after two pathetic performances. Like I've been saying, I can't see us even being able to get rid of him.

NO idea where Arshavin was today, nor why Nasri was wasted, why Diaby or Song, Denilson are allowed anywhere near the first team. At the very least we should have been playing maybe Vela and Bendtner instead of Diaby and Song with Theo upfront, maybe no Theo either and Eboue on the wing. they are just crap players and we don't play well when we have so many crap players on the pitch.

Cant belive all these arsenal players have been injured at some point of the season.

eduardo
clichy
gallas
rosicky
v.persie
fabregas
walcott
toure
almunia
silvestre
arshavin
ade

We've had:
VDS
Neville
Brown
O'Shea
Evans
Ferdinand
Rafael
Fabio
Evra
Anderson
Nani
Ronaldo
Berbatov

Not sure on Rooney, think he did have an injury and maybe Scholes too. All teams have a fair share of injuries.

Pretty odd game today, probably get slated for this but I thought Arsenal played well and were the better team in many patches, but as I've come to accept, Arsenal just aren't going to win games against teams who can score. Until Arsenal buy a defence and a midfielder who is disciplined and can tackle, well.

Going forward, the team were good, and should have had 3 goals I think, maybe more. There were many good chances that should have been finished. That's not a bad attacking performance against a team with a great defense. The huge problems comes when Arsenal have to defend and it's something that absolutely needs to be addressed this summer, 3 players is all it needs, a defensive CM and a couple of big defenders.

I was actually encouraged by the performance at times today, the team got stuck in more and seemed to have more urgency and drive which is a good sign, shame they got shot down so ruthlessly. I personally don't think today was a 4 - 1 to Chelsea game, it seemed so surreal when I watched the game for a while and then realised it was 3 - 0 .. to Chelsea.

As i've been saying, all teams have had multiple small injuries, long term injuries we've had very few and those have been people who almost certainly wouldn't have played much.

Eduardo might be great, but he was great last year when he wasn't starting games, he was great this year when he hasn't been starting games. RVP and Ade started the majority of games this year.

I still say fabregas is our only and mean only flat out first team starter thats missed more than a few weeks. Gallas aswell but to be perfectly honest, our season was completely over by the time he and CLichy were injured, those injuries, Arshavins, haven't effected the outcome of our season even slightly. yes maybe the points total in 4th place, but nothing else.

Ok if we had a real manager, Rosicky, Eduardo, Fabregas injuries would have massively changed our season, or problem is the manager, nothing more, nothing less.

It was, Chelsea are a team who are designed to defend then counter in a horribly clinical fashion. Having more of the ball, or more time in their half means smeg all. Its their style of encouraging the other team to push forwards that leave the opposition so vunerable at the back. Due to Song's ignorance and lack of discipline he constantly went miles further fowards than he should and boom, we're a goal down.

our defence is fine, the same defence(largely) lost 3 whole games last year, less than Utd in the league. The change has only been in midfield, Gallas has been superb, since TOure was allowed back in the team we've had a long run of plenty of clean sheets and less losses, Sagna hasn't been at his best but has been coming back from injury. Clichy's been fine, we are woefully exposed by a horrible midfield. We do need a centreback, but we need acceptable cover. Man U have been left short but frankly Evans is it, O'shea, Brown are massively class above Djourou and song. We need far better cover, Senderos is miles better than Djourou and Song. After 5 years of every single year getting defensive injuries and being left short, we finally had a chance this year to have 2 great, 1 decent and one future centreback, and we sent the decent one off. Suicidal.

THe thing thats so gutting is, from the first 10 minutes of the first preseason game in July, to today, the problems in every single game have been the same and easily visible. It was clear Denilson, Song, Diaby, Djourou weren't even remotely good enough to be at the club, it was clear Flamini/Gilberto's loss was massive. We lost early games, Toure was barely getting games, nothings changed all season long, same weaknesses all the way through.

Arsenal fans got all exicited about a winning streak recently, which included 8 championship quality sides(two actual championship sides, and the bottom 6 in the table), while Villa failed to win more than 1 in 13 games on the trott and somehow thought we were fantastic. As I said, put us in against a good side and we'll not only lose, we'll get ripped open through our lack of midfield defence. Almost every goal against Chelsea, Man U and Liverpool was massive space right infront of the defence, stupid freekicks conceded by Denilson/Song desparately chasing the ball and woeful marking from the same players at corners.

We had the team to win 1 or 2 cups this year, the players were simply on the bench and being ignored.

For all those that called me an idiot for saying Bendtner was good and Ade was crap, he's now almost scored the same, in far less games, while constantly as today being played out of position in losing teams with crap players around him.

We didn't even get out of second gear today and just passed the ball round City, I thought they may have put up a fight seeing as they were on a decent run.

As for the Arsenal/Chelsea game, Arsenal should have had it done in the first 20 minutes, it was a carbon copy of the CL semi, they dominated and had a few decent chances and then got picked off once Chelsea found their feet.

Adebayor should have been off for his 2 utterly comical dives.

How time allows people to forgot ! Did someone just say Senderos is miles better than Djourou and Song ? Senderos is hardly better than Titus Bramble, Senderos has a serious case of bad luck and clumsiness rolled into one

To those who think Wenger should get the sack, why exactly ? Because we've not won anything in 4 years ? Okay, but have we not been in contention most of those years in most cups, CL included ? Would you rather we join the rest where we sack a perfectly good manager and then after having four different ones realise the one we had was not bad at all. Think back 15 years, a time before Wenger, Arsenal were pretty average, Wenger has changed that. Can he get us back on the right way ? Maybe, but give him a chance, rather him onboard than we become the next Spurs and have to call in Redknapp to stop us from relegation

Arshavin's got pig flu or something and Chelsea aren't designed to defend and counter at all.
It's only v Barca and Arsenal recently that they've had to play like that as they just couldn't get the ball.
If they planned to play that way they wouldn't go 4-3-3 they'd set up more like they did away at Barca with DD up front on his own and 5 in midfield.
