Are we to expect that a top class manager will come here to try and build a future knowing for a fact that Shearer can step in at any time and take over as and when he feels like it?

That's a valid point, and the main reason I don't think Newcastle will attract a 'big' name manager, unless there were assurances that it's

Manager>Shearer

Wasn't that the main reason Big Sam turned down the job before you got Souness?

Decent 3-0 win for us today though numerous players looked shakey.

Also thought it was interesting that up untill Rooney got the third we were on the way to score 2 goals in our last 3 games and both being scored by the same player.

He was on the interview pannel
Its a soap opera club.

He wont be connected to the club for a while after he retires. Its obvious he will manage us one day , he should go to Hartlepool or darlington or somewhere like that first imo.

yeh.. im not expecting anything great next season either.. tbh.

as long as our manager can do what he thinks right with the squad and given time really.. we cant expect to win 10 in a row or whatever.. but who knows.

shephead wants big name players.. whats the point.. like owen .. fair enough.. big player but obviously he was gonna get injured at some point (unfortunate for the length of time like) but there seems to be no emphasis on building a squad...

your right in saying we need 10players... we need loads because our first 11 is alright.. besides defence... but any injuries and we are stumped... we have no decent backup players... its going to take longer than this summer to sort it out...

big fat freddy has carped the club in the last few seasons... sir bobby should never of been sacked imo... he should have been given to the end of the season... fair enough if we finished 14th... but i doubt we would have... in the end we ended up 14th with souness. pathetic high level management.

i dont want £20million players at newcastle... i wish ffreddy would get real and plough some money in a squad... let the manager build a squad.. and not waste money on a few players.

im very happy parker was bought though... he has been the best player to arrive at the club for a while... maybe owen will be better.. IF he stays.

but we have to give the next manager time.. we cant jump on his back if we lose a few.... we are a big club... but unfortunately we have drifted from the top6 teams.... we need time patience hard work and 10players :p to get there again.

hats off to shearer.. great player.. great man... newcastle's best player...

but i hope he sticks to his word and retires and has a break from football for a few year.... he is too oldto play every week at premiership level, and will certainly be no good as our manager....maybe in 10year time

I agree with you both.

I think we need some stabilty at the club, get someone in who has a long term plan rather than flitting between managers every couple of seasons. I'm not saying if we had stuck with souness we would have got better, but we do need a solid foundation starting with the manager.

As lemon said, it's all well and good spending £20M on a big name player but when that person doesn't get the consistant support from the rest of the team it's a waste. I would rather spend that money on a number of solid hard workers than on one 'superstar'. Look at what Sam Allardyce has done at bolton. I'm not saying he's the man for the job, I'm just saying that when you look at the squad they are a bunch of hard working lads and they are now 7th in the league.

As for Shearer and the Noth-Eastenders antics of the board I think he does need a break to allow the new manager to sort himself out and as Vandle said, if he could get some managerial experience at another club before coming back to us that would be good.

Did anyone watch or read (cant remember where I saw it) someone comparing Shearer and Teddy Sheringham and they said that Teddy is still happy playing every week at 39/40 so Shearer should stay for another couple of seasons. Don't agree myself but there you go.

Regarding the squad; On paper we have a very competant side but in practice they don't work well together. Again, as lemon was saying, the minute we get an injury we are in trouble. I feel a bit sorry for Ramage yesterday. I know his clearance was poor and as a result came off of Bowyer and he also caused a couple of the Charlton breaks but he was being forced to play on his wrong side.

I think we do need to start replacing some of the players and we also need back-ups who can fall into the squad as and when they are needed. However, this is such a big job and I just can't see it all being done by the start of next season or even the 2007 january transfer window. I think we will be looking at two or three seasons (if we keep the new manager that long) before we start seeing the benifits.

Saying that I would be quite happy for us to bob just above the middle of the table for a couple of seasons ;) if it meant the team was re-structured to the point where we could start competing for the top spots again.

There was never a chance of a coupon buster here, Livi are mince and we're just getting better. Considering how bad we started the season it's almost unbelievable that we're 20 odd points ahead. Our football hasn't been quite as good for the last couple of months but we're tighter at the back.

We should win the title a week Wednesday against pretenders Hearts and finally bury the memory of last years capitulation. HAIL HAIL, GIRFUY!

Thank god for that! I thought we played really well 2nd half although maybe we were a tad lucky at the end ;)

I thought Dawson had a really poor game today, he's been outstanding all season though!

So gutted for Robson, they at least deserved a point. Still not so bad, with B'ham losing this weekend against Chelsea ;) and the small matter of West Brom doing one over the Scousers it looks rosy.
