Definate straight red for Van De Meyde (spelling?). His left elbow went looking for Alonso's face.

I thought all but 2 of the bookings WERE yellow cards. Also, to the letter of the law, I thought the ref did his job properly today.
I didn't think he meant it tbh. He kept his eye on the ball until the last minute, when he saw Alonso coming in on him, and tried to play the ball. I also didn't see any reason why Kewell and Stubbs got yellow cards and I thought the yellow card Alonso picked up was harsh. It was a 50/50 challenge and both players went for the ball.

Can't agree. Watch how high his left elbow goes compared to his right elbow. He knew where Alonso was.

I've already said i didn't agree with the bookings of Kewell and Stubbs. They were silly bookings.

Did Alonso get booked for the high tackle on Phil Neville? If so, that was a deserved caution.

I didn't think he intentionally took a swing at him. He jumped in at an angle and caught him with his leading arm. IMO it just deserved a yellow but that's purely down to my interpretation of the event and not the rules. I would only class the type of elbow Alan Shearer took in the face in one of the earlier rounds of the FA Cup to be worthy of a red card.

:o Sorry. I didn't read your earlier post about Stubbs and Kewell.

Just watched it again and I've changed my mind. It's not what I would call a bad challenge but he did catch him late so it had to be a booking really. It could've gone the other way if Alonso got to the ball first.

well well well. I just got back home from a fantastic day out. Watching Liverpool beat Everton is one of the joys in life. Watching Liverpool beat Everton with our best player off the park makes it even better.

When Liverpool went down to ten men, Everton failed to capitalise on that. They should have come at us like men posessed. Instead, the ten men of Liverpool took it to them.

There is bound to be a lot of talk about the red cards, the yellows etc etc but that is what local derbies are all about. The ref had a nightmare in the first half, giving Everton most of the decisions but had a better second half. No supporter can disagree with the result though. Liverpool deserved the win full stop.

The atmospehere in the Kop today was outstanding. I have not heard it that loud all season, even against Man U in the cup. I took some videos and mp3 files of it and will upload them tomorrow if people want to get a feel for what it was like.

What a day, what a match and what a team.

You'll never walk alone.

Listening to some of the commentary from the SKY sports guys on the Scouse derby and they didn’t half come up with some nonsense. They were actually considering having double standards in refereeing. They were talking about how much passion can go into a derby and they were saying how they should make it more lenient in such circumstances. How can two games be refereed with different standards? The fact it is a derby is beside the point. If it’s a bad tackle, it’s a bad tackle and if it warrants a red in any other game then it should warrant a red in a derby too.

I just found it so hypocritical when they talk about how refs need to be more consistent week in week out and they come up with some daft remarks like that.

Isn't that the point of referreeing though? To exercise judgement (which will inevitably mean "inconsistency")?

If a match is going really well, and there are no major fouls or incidents taking place, then the first time a dangerous tackle goes in, you'd expect the ref to punish, in order to "tell off" the offending player, and stop anyone from going and doing the same, and having it boild over into something ill-tempered.

On the opposite hand though, when you've got a game where the players are kicking figurative (and occasional literal) lumps out of each of other, surely the ref may need to do more than just throw cards around, or nothing will get sorted and too many people could end up going off? He needs to sort out who's causing the main trouble, have a quiet word, warn, and avoid immediate cards for hope of calming the game down.

I'm not saying that two-footed, studs-up, leg-breakers should be allowed in some matches and not others, but there is definitely some room a tiny bit of leeway. It just needs an intelligent ref to administer it. Which we seem to unfortunately lack in Prem at the moment.

Meanwhile, Boro are 2-1 up against Bolton, which is official Good For Arsenal. Can't see WBA getting anything against Spurs, but with this and Wigan losing, it's good for our run-in, even with the added fixture congestion. :)

Charlton 0-0 Newcastle too, 10 mins in.

Barnaby 3-4 for Boro in ET! What a game.

edit: All over, Boro win 4-3. Well done, great game, good build up for the ManU game :D

What the hell was the yellow card for?? Well done middlesborough!!!!

Pogatetz? I think he deserved it as he pushed Davies, the free kick was even more bizzare! But Davies certainly deserved one too. I didn't think there was much difference between the Everton red yesterday and his elbow, which didn't even get a free kick.

You can see how Pogatetz got that long ban and the nickname Mad-dog!

Webb made a few mistakes like booking Jaaskelainen for handling outside the area. The fact that he was in his area means he can handle it!
