Wenger thread

The positives of club threads are:

- Get to know who supports the same club as you (+ possibly meet them before games for a beer)
- Good place to stick general club chatter
- Less tedious arguments between fans of the same club in match day/other threads
- I can take people like Running_Man off my ignore list
- Cheets64 gets a thread all to himself :p

I have to be honest, I wouldn't bother posting in a Swansea official thread because it'd just end up on page 5 with 2 views, it's just easier to comment on the match day threads :p

Just for the record here are the main reasons they are not allowed

They stifle discussion
They create sub groups of members
They attract trolls
They lead to others accusing non supporters of trolling
They lead to reduced numbers of threads and topics being lost
Supporters of smaller clubs feel left out
The threads become fragmented where successive posts often are nothing to do with each other
They are near impossible to moderate because they are hard to follow

all these happened when we had them and improved after they were got rid of

Well, the Wenger sacking thread was encouraging discussion, I didn't see anyone posting in there stop posting in other threads, I don't remember anyone accusing anyone of trolling, or any trolls being in there, nor a lack of new threads, successive posts having nothing to do with eachother is almost the definition of half the other football threads which are so all over the place they are often impossible to follow, and in terms of moderating, if someone swears or insults, the actual content of the post doesn't particularly matter does it, so I can't see how its harder to moderate because its somehow harder to follow.

So if those were the reasons the threads get closed, I don't think any of that criteria applies to it.

On a note for me, on many forums this off topic ridiculous nonsense people go on about is insanely stupid. In real life discussions move around, who the hell cares if discussions go off topic? Yeah, okay, if two people started detailing how to take apart some BMW engine in a Wenger sacking thread, its just not worthwhile for the people who want to talk about Wenger, nor those who want to talk about the engine.

But a list of salarys that Wenger sorted out, for players he signed, who all suck, which is directly linked to people explaining why he should be fired is "off topic".........

If everybody done that then I'd see no problem with club threads. I can't see everybody sticking to that though. After a while, around 5pm on a Saturday we'd have Arsenal fans discussing their match in the Arsenal thread, Liverpool fans discussing their match in the Liverpool thread and so on.

I can see that as an issue for the big four clubs but for the rest of us it isn't even worth posting anymore about our clubs. It gets lost in a sea of United v someone posts and no one really cares.

For me the matchday threads are almost pointless. No one bothers with them other than the top four because they know they end up talking to themselves :D Watch a matchday thread when united play on a sunday. 50 or 60 posts, united play 100 pages of arguing, moaning etc etc.

I don't agree there is any less trolling from not having official threads. Look at the number of people that just turn up to say lol manu or lol arsenal when they lose. Even the arsenal beating in europe recently had little to do with the game or tactics just people turning up to lolarsenal.

I don't believe they stifle discussion either because you cannot get less discussion that you already have with teams outside the top 4.

I found the wenger thread interesting and the reason there would have been so many RTMs is because fans of other teams with zero interest in the thread where falling over themselves to report it any time a single post could be deemed off topic. They made it a mission to get it closed. I'm sure that happens with other teams as well.

Sometimes it works well, the suarez thread was great. All in one place, it got closed and it all ended up in the matchday thread. That was a bad decision imho. Then people that were not interested in the little **** were forced to read it where before they didn't have to enter the suarez thread :D
