Went in 1.8 Integra type R ...

whats good? the fact they are gutless low down the revs that higher up it makes it feel more powerful than it is?

High specific output per litre, legendary reliability, thrash it day in day out and it will just ask for more etc etc.

I can only speak from experience of owning a B16 engined VTi but in reality day to day the perceived lack of torque is not an issue, you can still bimble around low revs in 4th and 5th quite happily, then drop a couple of cogs when you want to go quickly.

Yes, would unfortunatley if the low end rpm ws as good as it gets. Ironically big low end torque is the falling block of a lot of other FWD hot hatches, especially without LSD's

4 years with zero issues on my Integra is a good thing. It feels like a 190bhp car aswell. Just waiting for the ***** to move in to lower the angle of my drive so I can park it in the garage (I struggle to get up the hill with such woeful torque)

Due to the way the car is geared, my Integra feels very "pokey" at low RPM. I use that term with caution, as I know it's never going to sit well with some people, but that's how I find it.

It's not as if the engine is a one trick pony with a tiny power band, it has a nice flat spread of torque and the gearing really makes use of this. But it delivers 190 horsepower for half a millisecond at 9 billion RPM so this is the figure that always gets thrown about, it's often overlooked that they are nice to drive off VTEC too.

They werent voted best FWD car of all time for nothing.

And evo never said this about them for nothing

would be interesting to see how it would have ranked if it didnt have vtec, but instead a slightly larger lower revving non vtec engine. I think it would still be right at the top.

I doubt it, VTEC is the ultimate for a FWD for reasons stated above, the B18 works in perfect harmony with the chassis and that's what makes it so exceptionally good.

but what if said slightly larger lower revving engine had a torque curve as flat as a vtecs and the gearing was adjusted so it gave about the same wheel torque.

Would still be worse, at best you'd still have less flexibility due to a shorter rev range and therefore longer gearing.

yes but being a bigger engine there is more torque, so even though the gears are longer, the torque to the wheels is about the same. So you dont lose any flexibility.
