Wetherspoons

2 of each round my way and although i dont drink in them anymore, when i was younger they were the prime choice for a decent cheap pint of ale with all the local nutcases and unemployed of romford/hornchurch.

The "old men" in them places were brilliant always asking to use the downstairs disabled loo, kept the assistant manager busy all day asking for the key :p

Are they all non-smoking now?

Id class that as a good thing ;)

Yeh it is but it was a work night out and i was meant to have a meal. IF they had bothered to speak to us about it instead of being gay. Why do you never get id'd once you actually have id with you  (im 18 now btw)

Not all of them - they'd originally planned to pre-empt the government smoking ban and try for the extra business before it became a national thing, but left it too late to get any real advantage. The ones up here are (Edinburgh), but that's Scotland for you :)

Worked in spoons for 9 months, then had to leave before I killed myself. And because I was off travelling. I go out there on a Sunday night with uni friends for a quiet drink (been good during the beer festival especially), and the one back wher eI used to live (The Temeraire, Saffron Walden) was the cheapest place in town by far, and also the only one able to accommodate everyone who tended to meet up on a night out.

Food's ok (It's not ALL microwaved :P), especially now they've gone back to grilling burgers instead of microwaving them, but working in the kitchen for a bit made me learn which things to eat and which to leave be. Very much depends on the pub, it can vary massively depending on the staff attitudes and how good the manager is at keeping them at least slightly satisfied. Ours was fairly terrible, sadly, and everyone was working many extra shifts at little or no notice. Got on well with the other staff, but not getting paid beyond 1am sucked too.

Not a job I'd like to go back to, but a decent enough place for a quiet drink - ours was always full of chavy sorts, and I could see the regulars being intimidating to some, but the one up here's very nice. Did get some impressive fights in my one , tall tables being slammed down on heads and so on..

No real experience of lloyds, never went to the one in Cambridge.

Cheap as... When I'm away on training for work I get £20 a night for eating out. Most restaurants it's case of fiddling to stay under that, or forking out some of your own cash. In Wetherspoons I can't finish a meal that costs much above a tenner.

I'm after opinions.

What do you think of the Wetherspoons/Lloyds No.1 company as a whole?

What words/phrases spring to mind when you think of a Wetherspoons?

What do you think of their customer service? And how do you think it could be improved?

cheers :)

Posh version of Yates (that's not a compliment)

Wetherspoons = Saturday morning burger in Kirkcaldy (we usually stay the night there on a Friday) with the bf's friends.

They seemed to have given birth to lots of them in Liverpool.

We have one by Mathew St, which isn't too bad, but a bit of family style pub (not at night time/ w/e obviously). It was the first pub in Liverpool to totally ban smoking. A few weeks later it reversed the decision lol. It's now got half and half which all three over here are doing.

There's one well out of town which apparently is quite rough, and there's one more by the big station which is just way too crowded on the weekend.
There's also a Llyod's Bar as well which I think are owned by the same people. I'm sure it's ok, but it's not anywhere I'd go as it's usually filled with scallies.

If I do go to one, it's usually because it's cheaper than where I wanna end up, or it's because I need to get out of the rain...

As the poster's above say, there's no music. I've been to one where it has had music video's on their muted TV's (which I'm guessing they bought for football).

I never used to mind eating there. It always beat Mcdonald's KFC etc for taste. However my housemate has just joined the kitchen staff, and well, it suffices to say that apart from a Sunday Roast, I won't be touching anything else!

My local spoons is great now that they've made it mostly non-smoking. It really keeps the nasty people away. I don't mind old crazy people about as long as they keep themselves to themselves. Spoons is a good place to get drunk with your mates, saying that though, their beer is usually served to a high standard and there is a good selection.

Is there a spoons in Haslemere?! I presume it's Surrey we're talking about.

There's no way on this earth that I would pay the £4 to get in to my local Lloyds on a Friday night. That said, Veuve is quite reasonable at £37/bottle. But I can't smoke my bloody cigars indoors, so they don't get my money.

The local Wetherspoons is the place to go if you want a fight and/or to be approached by urine-scented old men for sexual interaction.

I avoid.

Ones in Kirkcaldy and Edinburgh are nice. One in Kirkcaldy has a good atmosphere + cheap food & drink. Service is always good, normally a good all round pub (and it plays music).
One in Edinburgh is much the same but hhhuuuuggggeeee and always far far too busy.
All in all, I like wetherspoons lots.

Also, would you English people shut up about smoking in pubs, its banned you know.........well....up here.

One in bristol by the riverfront is a decent enough place, but not for on a night out. Don't like the music selection and its usually incredibly busy. I like going down there once in a while for some cheap food, its actually cheaper than cooking!!

£2.99 for a Burger & Chips, and a pint!
£4.99 For Sunday Roast + Pint!!

Bargain.

i really need to move to a cheaper part of the world :/

Tis £3.99 for burger and a pint up here. I would have thought they would have standard prices. Is it a franchise or what?

Oh yes, steak nights and curry nights aswell with similiar deals. Also can get 2 chicken tikka's for 6 quid! The curries i find surprisingly good (consider i've only got tesco ready meals to compare them to :p ).

Also, no music i hear being mentioned a lot!? Thats the most annoying thing in Lloyds bristol, the music is far to loud if you just wanna eat something!

Maybe Lloyds is different to Wetherspoons? Thinking about it the Wetherspoons in Swindon (The Savoy, absolute ****hole) has no music....

Oh aye its 3.99, but we have 100's of £1 off vouchers :p .
Vouchers? Where are these vouchers you speak of? I must procure some post-haste as curry night approacheth.

seconded tbh...

100's to share with fellow OcUKers??? :p

OK maybe 100's was a slight exaggeration, maybe about 10 for each month :p .

There at the back of our monthly "What to do around town if your a student" guide things.

Ones in Manchester/Bury are usually very peaceful in the day but full of scallies on weekends and student nights. Place to go if you're looking for a fight.
