We've noticed you're using an ad blocker...

I have two ad blockers on the go usually, sites are starting to block some functionality when they detect them so occasionally I have to disable one of them.

It's amazing we even used to put up with them to be honest, nothing more annoying than intrusive adverts, using chrome on mobile devices is unusable on some websites with no ad blockers.

I don't like the whole "We deserve to get paid" attitude towards websites and videos these days.

Back in the day, you made videos and websites as a hobby, they cost you a little money, but that's what hobbies do. Now, though, everyone is screaming "If you don't support me I can't make content!"

Pfft. If you can't afford to create content, get a real job.

I've been running a website, ad-free, for years now out of my own pocket, as it is my hobby.

Congratulations, you have won the thread.

I don't use ad blocking software, few sites bother me and the few with auto loading videos just get closed.

Doesn't adblocker give you access to maybe load a max number of ad's per page? or to limit the type of adverts that are allowed? such as, show a max of 2 adverts and none of those should be video or audio ads.

I only whitelist shopping sites that will be used via QuidCo/TopCashback, else adblocking sometimes results in sales not being tracked, and cashback not being registered. Happy with this, as it means I get money.

I have uBlock Origin set to allow non obtrusive ads, so it's not all bad. I never see ads on YouTube videos though, which is nice.

I tried to avoid blocking ads but so many sites now bog down the whole browser with additional ad based content and especially the sites that launch video ads automatically drove me to using some script blocking - but then you get the even more annoying fullscreen or "we've detected blah" so I just stop using those sites and haven't missed them.

i just installed adblocker ultimate on firefox, visited 3 web pages and it's already blocked 54 adverts

and they wonder why people run adblocks

Got ABP over here. If any website warns me about it I leave immediately. Similarly I don't accept that websites *need* to use cookies to improve my experience. I'd rather have a worse experience or leave the website.

I use adblocker especially for Gamespot then they added stupid auto video ads which boom out for 15 secs before you can watch anything

Other adblockers wont allow any video on its site to play :(

The problem is that websites took the **** and as a result a huge number of people started using adblockers.

This.

I started using ABP when YouTube started adding 30 second unskippable ads. I'm not wasting my life watching the same ****ing annoying advert 20 times over half an hour, if you want me to do that then you can start paying ME for my time.

I don't see the problem, myself.
Adblock plus was useful while it lasts, but at the same point it is reducing revenue streams for websites. Less revenue means they need to put on more adverts for those that don't run adblock.

Can't really blame website owners for trying to do what they can to maintain income, unless you want certain websites to go under.

I disagree. Create a site with content that users feel is worth paying for and you've got your revenue stream. Too many people setting up poor websites with little to no original content, and then try to drive people to them through underhanded methods such as clickbait titles and pop ups

Some sites have become unusable due to all the badly thought ad spam.

I just stop using them. Its the only way they will learn to tone it back.

Sorry but this "real job" dig at people who create content is just as bad as the people who say you are stealing their content.

It's not just "talking to a camera". They are being an entertainer/presenter who has to keep their videos fresh and interesting for hours and hours at a time. I would argue it takes longer than a normal 8 hour day to plan the content, capture the video while being entertaining, then editing and uploading the video, creating thumbnails and description, etc..

Just because they don't feel tired and aren't dirty and sweaty from doing a hard manual labour job doesn't mean it's "not a real job".

What's that got to do with hosting an ad filled website?

I don't see why there isn't space for both people who do it as a hobby, like Pixel, and people who do it as a career.. There are many fantastic sites that have grown out of this (look at arstecnica, gigaom, anandtech) and some great youtube channels too. Ad-block with whitelist is the best way. Reward the good ones, protect yourself from malware, ignore the bad ones.

My take on this...

If I feel someone or a site is taking the **** then they get blocked. If they'd likely get fired from the equivalent desk job for substandard work, shoddy content and/or spamming people with ads then they/the site will get blocked.
