We've noticed you're using an ad blocker...

The advertising industry brought it on themselves, if there was none of this 50,000 full screen overlays burying autoplay cillit bang videos set to 3notches above obnoxiously loud then i wouldnt be using adblock.

I do turn it off for websites that have reasonably non intrusive advertising, of which there are few.

I currently have no adblocker for my phone, and the amount of urine extraction by advertisers, auto play, redirection and even, to my surprise, old school filth tactics that goes through even aggregator sites like Flipboard only confirms that adblocking is the only way to go. Plus, since we pay for GB of internet, it's effectively stealing from readers. We click on link to see the article, not to be robbed by 50+ adverts per page, with redirection to next page after 10 words.

If you are running website and have problem with adblockers, because your revenue drops, then remember that adblocker was something users installed actively seeking solution to a problem. You are the problem. And your revenue is to sort out between you and your advertiser, not to be extracted by force from visitors actively trying to defend themselves from your sponsors.

Here is an idea - start charging MORE for LESS adverts. One revolving banner, but your advertisers pay more for it. Make it exclusive. Sorted. Fixed under 30 seconds. Here's another one - you put sponsor's name under the title, for a premium - "This guy tried to lick dogs bottom, you won't believe what happened next (sponsored by Listerine Advanced Mouth Wash)". Running video channel? Start you daily moan with "And a special shout goes to our sponsor of the day - Associated Clickbytes - visit link below this video for the extra dose of bull**** if you already purged your spam folder this morning". There. See? 40 seconds in, and I've already doubled your revenue. Now GTFO before I blacklist your four letters. Donkeyhole.

What makes me laugh is when professional youtubers forget to disable Adblock on their own browsers and happen to film their screen when showing something unlreated, or even just straight forward screen capture. Lo and behold the little octagonal icon sitting there top right :)

yep.. and, as controversial as it is, i actually think that AdBlock Plus contracting with ad networks and whitelisting those that pay and follow their "Acceptable Ads" is actually a good way forward. In all these scenarios there has to be some give and take... for too long the pendulum was towards "take" with ad network shovelling crap in our faces, but it would be good not to swing too far the other way.

this. It's exactly the reason why ad blocking is so widely used.
another easy solution is to offer an ad-free version which people can pay to access.. easy and it gives people choice.

True but their are plenty of websites that are criminal for pushing so many adverts that the actual content of what you are looking for becomes hard to find/read.

Criminal? Really? Being a tad dramatic there I think.

You don't HAVE to use the website after all.

Whilst I do whitelist certain sites, I bet there are a lot who never whitelist anything, unless the website cuts functionality when it recognises Adblock.

It has got a bit ridiculous with the ads and popup menus and overlays etc on some sites

Started to use a raspberry pi with Pi-Hole which works great on ads and i noticed on my portable devices that pages load much quicker than before.
Apparently 13% of traffic was ads today lol.
Love this most of all from removing the stupid ads in skype :), i do wish everyone i know would stop using skype so we could move onto a better app lol.

Also use a few other browser addons to make life a little better
"Behindtheoverlay" allows you to remove those stupid overlays that block the screen

"Youtube enhancerplus" to stop YouTube from auto playing and also put it in 1080p HD at all times

And a few others as mentioned above, just makes life a little more bearable online these days.

I whitelist sites that I use regularly, and block ads on everything else. I'm actually more proactive and concerned about blocking trackers though.

As someone said earlier in the thread Websites took the pee, and they have a long way to go to earn back my trust.

Yeah, i do enable their non intrusive advertising.

The worst is if your on a mobile connection, basically paying for ads.

I'm all for sites making money, but youtube seems to do well enough with the rare 30s ad or 5 second skippable one.

Its when adblock starts quoting triple figures for blocking i get annoyed, hell double figures is bad enough.
