What a **** !!!!

In fact insurance was the only thing stopping my parents buying a Cooper over a Cooper S.

Insurance only affects the young. At your parents age, the difference between a Cooper and a Cooper S is a few quid at the most. My parents insure their Group 19 car for about 290 quid.

Yep but as I don't have my car and don't plan to have one for quite some time (still saving and waiting for insurance to fall) they wanted to get a car that I could enjoy too. It was an extremely nice gesture and I'm grateful. Although to be honest it is primarily for my mum and she didn't want a Cooper S.

As for America, I suspect they probably don't have the same boy-racer problem that we do in the UK and hence the insurance system is possibly more realistic.

I do think he'll miss out on some things in life. Where will he go from an M3 at 16?

He'll never really get the pleasure of getting something you've dreamed of and worked hard for.

In the pics he posts later it just looks wrong. I've known people with allsorts of cars as a first so the topic in hand doesn't bother me. The colour and the chrome grille just don't suit the M3. I it looks pretty regular from front.

I suppose I'm spoilt by the gnarly loud very clean white M3 with carbon roof that I see round here (probably a drug dealer) but that just doesn't scream auto lust to me like an M3 should.

yeh i see what you mean, but he is absolutely useless with a camera which isnt helping

i see nothing wrong with that sentence :p
an M3 isn't really that expensive though is it? remember that VAT is much lower, along with car-related taxes the OTR price will be much lower (relatively)

Well, yes I think it's a very large amount of money actually. But I probably wouldn't if I was loaded...

Its a different way of life for some people, if I think about it I get sick with envy to be honest.

The argument that the kid will have no satisfaction by not working for it and what not can be made I guess, but I sincerely doubt that is going to cause him any sleepless nights with what I can only imagine will be a very hot and plastically enhanced girl friend from the same way of life with whom he's just been out to eat with for the 6th time that weekend as he lies in front of his B&O 62" Plasma.

Fair play to him, I know I have had things I didn't work for, he has just gotten much more, at least im not in the middle of Pakistan or Africa.

Yes it seems a lot for a 16 yr old but he seems slightly more sensible then the drivelling idiots on my supersweet 16 so it's hardly far to chuck him into that category straight away. Hopefully he won't be a tit and stack it into a tree but time will tell.

As said, once he gets bored of it in 5 years (provided he hasn't stacked it) what will he buy then? Surely his parents won't buy him another car at 21? Surely not?

Well that's nice.

Is such a car as expensive to keep and run in America as the UK?

Are his folks going to pay to keep it maintained? most likely....!

Make your mind up.

Manipulating my quote, thanks.

I'm sorry but if your parents offered you a brand new Cooper to drive for a bit of a laugh when you got back from uni, would you turn it down?

Hmmmm

Same principle as this thread though. I don't want my parents to serve me a Cooper S on a plate. I've gone from a 1.4 Golf. I'm going to enjoy it and appreciate it and then buy myself something nicer in the future. Fact is I am extremely happy and I don't really care what you think.

I'll look forward to scottering around in it and driving an E93 BMW third party too.

In a way I am glad my parents are not rich and did'nt buy me a fast expensive car (bought my own rather rubbish one) simply because when you have something like that it sets the bar so high its going to be really hard to follow and anything else will feel pretty crap, start off at the bottom and as you progress you get a big buzz every time you get a slightly faster car, start off near the top and where do you go!

*edit, seems to just echo what everyone else is saying*

What do you mean? If i was totally loaded, i'd have a games room for my kids with big tv etc, send them to the best schools and pay out the nose for it etc. Buy them a car, a desirable car. Obviously they wont be able to pay for insurance, i would pay that. However, they'd have to pay for their own damn fuel! BUT...what i'm saying is it's a gift, its all relative. A lot people get cars bought by their parents and sometimes they want their kids to have the best. Whether its appropriate or not doesnt always come into it, but thats not how to live life.

Notice the ":p" at the end of my post :)

I would also spoil my children with cars and all the best stuff if I was loaded.
