What an earth do I buy?

thread steal..

am considering a mondeo / focus for my next car..

mpg is more important to me than speed/power, but heavy/responsive steering is a must too

which models should i look into? :)

-i won't shoot them all down like the OP :p

What decent sized petrols can average 40-45mpg?

At your budget? None of them.

Have you sat down and done some maths and worked out your weekly fuel bill at 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 mpg?

If not, do it. Because the difference between 35mpg and 40mpg is nothing to write home about.

Did this a few weeks back on the Astra SRI's because it was easier.

Astra 1.8 SRi VVTi 120 XP 30,000 miles, 39mpg @ 106.9p = £3738.29

Astra 1.9 CDTi SRI 150 XP 30,000 miles, 48mpg @ 118.9p = £3378.31

Petrol's insurance group is 8. Diesels is 12.

My miles will mainly consist of twisty, Welsh, A roads, somedays a 250 mile round trip to the Welsh coast.

Petrol or Diesel!? My Saxo won't be doing 42mpg on these roads, probably 38mpg.

A Golf TDi would be doing 53-55mpg?

Your view of MPG figures seems a bit squiffed to be honest. The car's gonna be a work horse, so a large safe and comfortable 2L petrol Mondeo would fit very well, but apparently they are a 'barge'

But it is going to be the vast majority of work related driving, what if you need to carry a large load, gonna be a bit stuck in a Punto, no?

Have you even driven a Mk3 Mondeo? If I had to by something myself (with my low budget) it would be a Mondeo as it's the best for my job for running costs, avilabe space, comfort, saftey and lets face it, it's a good looking car, when cleaned :p
