Hey,

I guess this is the right section.

Basically my friends have Creative Zens, but I was more thinking of the 80 GB apple Ipod.

I have read a few reviews (just random googling honestly) and they had said that they are great - BUT the sound quality isn't the greatest in the world.

They also mentioned that apple Itunes is a little bit of a pain in the butt - is it ok to rip CD's and use MP3's that I already have on my PC, or is there a lot of messing about. A review I read said that it can be a bit tricky (I can't link to the review, because it has like 20 competitors to OCUK listed on it).

iTunes sucks, i have now moved onto to Winamp which is great and waaay faster.
I recently got some new headphones for my Classic aswell, which brings out the sound quality, i think it has good sound quality, but the standard iPod headphones hinder this.

My mate has a 80GB Black Classic, he swears by it.

He constantly comments it features, so I might even get rid of my Touch and get one for the space, maybe a 160GB version.

I have a 160gb classic and it's great. Sound quality is good as long as you rip at a decent bitrate. I try not to go below 192 Kbps just because I listen quite loud and I can hear the difference. Plus I have 160GB to fill!

iTunes sucks on Windows but it's great in OSX.

Damn :( I have now done the "lets do some research to help" thing and even more confused :(

Are the Touch Ipods good ? better than the regular ones ? The only thing that puts me off is the tiny amount of space vs price of the classic ones :/

The iPod Classic is leagues ahead of the iPod Video (aka iPod 5th Gen).

...just don't use the bundled headphones.

they are alright!. sound quality is good, bit on the flat side, but detailed enough. you cant use the eq without replay gaining the tracks first (you can do this with itunes as well) as Apple have no idea how to implement an equaliser - it just drives the player into signal clipping way before the player runs out of headroom. get some decent headphones to make the best of it. very similar in sound to my iphone and the itouch, neither of which can really compare to my sony which has such an involving sound, if not the most detailed.

i hate using itunes, and the need to sort everything by tagging on an ipod (sort by file structure is so much easier), but if that isnt a problem for you then thats fine!

Horses for courses, but I'd much rather have music (and other content: photos, movies etc) tagged with metadata. Can't be arsed to arrange files in folders. Much easier to use the metadata to sort in different ways

The Classic ain't bad sound quality isn't as good as my old 4th Gen. iTunes as above is great on Mac OS X the Windows version is poor though.

Having seen an iPod Touch recently as well as using my iPhone it might be worth checking out a touch screen iPod.

this is it, horses for courses as you say. its not a big deal for me however, as every cd i rip gets put into a directory anyway:)

They're great!, and I happen to have one for sale in the MM haha :P.
But seriously, they are good. Itunes is a pita, but apart from that I've enjoyed owning several ipods. I used to loathe the idea of owning an ipod (I'm not a lifestyle brand person at-all), but I was converted :P.

I absolutely love mine, got mine towards the end of last year and I wouldn't use any other Mp3 player now. The interface is a joy to use, and the bags of space is useful if you're looking to store higher quality imports.

This might be a slight thread hijack but since I just bought the 160GB Classic, I might qualify to ask in here :)

Is there a way to get album art without using iTunes? If possible, I'd love to be able to use Winamp.

I am not impressed with the sound quality at all my sony nwa-808 kicks the seven shades out of the ipod classic. The bass is flat and if you attempt to bring it up you get clipping and distortion. The ipod stays in my car and the sony comes out with me.

Well I just got mine from OCUK (along with a DVD drive cause mine died :() so here is hoping :) Worst happens I guess there is always the distance selling act :/

The unit itself is very well built, very sleek. It is very thin too, only thinner ipod out there is the itouch.

The screen is bright, clear and the user interface needs no introduction. Even if you have never used an ipod before you'll soon find your way round in seconds. The battery life is good, it comes with a few games, the storage size is awesome for the money too.

The only downside i have found, when compared to the itouch/iphone is coverflow is slow to load up the images due to the HD aspect of the player. It is a bit like scrolling the coverflow in itunes really fast, on the itouch and iphone they are instant, i have never seen a grey box on them.

One thing with the classic is that i can change tracks, volume without getting it out of my pocket. Can't do that with the itouch (unless you jailbreak and install an app but that means leaving the screen on...). I can do it with the iphone but only if i use the supplied headphones.

Well hopefully if citylink have keep up with their recent service to me I should have it sometime tomorrow I really wasn't in the market for an MP3 player till a few days ago - but using a 256MB cell phone for MP3 play back (with headphones) grinds a bit. Not enough music at all :p
