US fighter jets have been scrambled after two Russian bombers buzzed a US aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific.

The TU-95 Bear bombers flew over at an altitude of 2,000ft.

Very unusual for them to be that close to the carriers without the u.s guys catching on - it is ancient technology really. They entered service in the late 50's!

They're just reminding the west that they're still there. They did it a while back, same type of planes entering UK airspace, we scrambled F3s from RAF Leeming to intercept them and escort them to their own side of that imaginary line.

It's all just posturing.

Used to be quite common a few decades ago, much more rare now. The Russian Government seems to be feeling rather negative towards the west of late though. Not quite sure what their intentions are, though they are clearly upset about the missile defence plans.

Remember we're all supposed to be friends atm. If they started scrambling fighters as soon as they saw the Russian planes on radar miles away they'd just play into Putin's more assertive attitudes towards the west.

It's a PR exercise to make them more important. They done a similar thing in the UK not so long ago when they flow two long range bombers in to UK air space and had to be told to leave.

They can't punch their weight on the world stage at the moment so they have to resort to cheep stunts like this every now and then just to remind the rest of the world they're still here.

EDIT: Doh, too slow :(

Does scrambled just mean that the jets are set out to follow or something?
Yes, that or a rather tasty way of cooking eggs ;)

EDIT: Doh, too slow again :(

If you're going to make a BIG Russian gesture, only one thing better than the good old Bear
