What are the worst “console” practices that have crept into PC gaming?

I bought the Halo Master Chief Collection on Steam the other day. I played the first Halo game on Windows when it came out but none of the others.

I’ve been playing through it and I’m currently near the end of Halo 2. Overall I am enjoying it.

One thing that grinds my gears though is the checkpoint system rather than saves. Personally if I am playing a single player game I want to be able to save it whenever I choose. It seems to be much more of a “console” thing but it crops up more and more in PC games (normally console ports I think)

Another thing that bugs me (often in combination with the above) are unpausable cut scenes. Again this seems to be something that has crept in from console games.

Anyone else got any “console” features they really hate seeing in PC games?

Holding buttons to perform actions, starfield is the latest one.

Hold tab to exit menu, hold x to exit ship, hold R to dock, its infuriating.
Oh my god this ! Drives me nuts games with the hold down a button thing. Just so ridiculous. Soon as I see it in a game it immediately makes me mentally drop my opinion of the game by a few points.

QTEs in general though that is more due to games being built console first the getting a PC version :s

Although more loosely linked to consoles so many games now have a horrendous setup for key bindings on PC as well with a lack of context sensitive action button(s), etc. to reduce down the number of binds and far too many specific key actions which you have no idea what the best setup for them is until you get to an area of the game that uses them, then you are left fumbling around to optimise things.

QTEs annoy me, so wherever I can I just enable them to autocomplete. I agree checkpoints are annoying, and especially on halo games they seem a bit random when they happen. I also don't like the aim assist crutch, some games you can't turn it off.

What I don't understand when they port games from console to PC is the way they completely ignore normal PC practices, and select control keys that are seemingly random.

Monster Hunter was like that. Infuriatingly awful interface.

I played a lot of Monster Hunter when it came out, but never got back in to the game or bought sequels, because I didn't want to re-learn the horrible UI.

Yes, another one where the port was lazy.
Lazy how? Genuine question as all I know is I bought it, it played well, looked fantastic, never crashed, controls were fine, an all round fantastic game. I have no idea how it compares to console, what is missing/was added, it's just a great game.

I think a lot of complaints aren't exclusive to consoles and ported over, consoles inherited some from PC too. Though quick saves are a crutch imo and remove some of the challenge. Well deployed checkpoints can be part of an overall well thought out game, adding to its gameplay.

Console and control schemes = Lazy developers.

Here is looking at you again ELITE DANGEROUS and the **** show of a developer FRONTIER... Never again will i spend money on your crap or any software/Dev team you have at your disposel.
