What book are you reading...

Finally finished the entirety of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, what a journey that has been! Also finished John le Carré's first 'George Smiley' book, Call of the Dead, fantastic.

Just started 'EVE: Templar One' by Tony Gonzales and is based on the EVE Online game. Need to get my EVE fix somehow, now that I'm not playing :p.

Sharpe's good but the Warlord trilogy are better if you ask me. I've been sticking with the Alfred the Great stuff hoping it might get close to that level again, but so far it's very readable but not that memorable.

Been reading The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan because I enjoyed his Takeshi Kovacs cyberpunk novels. I'm about halfway through and so far it hasn't really grabbed me the same way. All the lurid sex and violence is there but a lot of the story seems to be missing.

Just finished Book 6 in the Malazan series, Bonehunters. Probably my second favourite book in the series so far, doesnt quite reach the dizzy dizzy heights of Deadhouse Gates but its up there. Last 200 pages absolutely whizzed by, it was 3am last night and I was still reading as I just couldnt put it down.

Starting Reapers Gale now... fingers crossed!

Pandora's Star by Peter Hamilton , not normaly into scifi but after a few hundred pages this realy got me hooked , took me a month to read but cant wait to get Judas Unchained.

Just finished 'Wool' by Hugh Howey. It's a very good book indeed! Loved every page of it and found it hard put down.

After much umming and arring, I think I'm finally gonna get stuck into 'Gardens of the Moon' by Steven Erikson. Been putting this one off for a while after hearing it's a difficult one to get in to!

The Affair by Lee Child

I love 90% of his Jack Reacher books, only 2 so far have left me with a "meh" feeling.

This is one of the 90%, good story, more story than action which is a bit of a change but a nice back story as to why he is no longer in the army etc, kept me guessing right until the end, thought I had figured it out then had the rug pulled from under me!

That's good to hear, as I'm about halfway through Bonehunters and I'm finding it one of the weakest books so far. I was completely hooked during the Y'Ghatan 'siege' but other than that the story arc hasn't gripped me at all yet. In isolation, I've enjoyed certain scenes with Iskaral Pust, Icarium and Mappo, and Ganoes Paran, but as a cohesive whole, it's still lacking for me.

I am in need of a new epic series to get in to. Recommendations would be a real help.

-Complex story
-Big cast of interesting characters
-Doesn't shy away from violence/sex etc. Gritty I suppose would be the word.

Series I have read-

Lensman
Gateway
Rama
Foundation
Wheel of Time(first one, didn't like it)
Haldeman's Forever series.
ASOIAF.
Hitchhikers

I have Dune on my shelf, but never got round to starting it. I am working a night shift tonight, so will take it with me and give it a go.

Another I have been meaning to get round to for ages is Wolfe's Solar Cylce, anyone read it? I have read one of his books and wasn't keen for some reason that I forget.

Ive done a bit of book swapping. Ive always read books no matter if i didnt really get into them... but since i found you can refund amazon books if done so within a few days of buying ive been a bit more selective.

I went from
Prince of Thorns - Mark Lawrence, which i didnt really like.
Legend - David Gemmel, which i also couldnt get into.

So now ive gone for a writer who i know ill enjoy; Heroes by Joe Abercrombie.

Im a D&D reader at heart so i like quite a bit of magic and magical fantasy. None of the above writers do much in that sence but i think ive been spoilt by Abercrombie. Although he is low magic i love the plot twists in the The First Law series, didnt like Best Served Cold as much. Reading other authors low magic books dont seem to do what Abercrombie has done for me.

Ive pondered on starting the Malazan Empire, but im doubtfull if ill get along with it. I like a clear cut story without tons of story lines going on within and i have heard the Malazan Empire can get confusing, and that will likely put me off.

So hopfully Heroes will be hard to put down, although i did buy the special edition and couldnt work out why it was 'special' so got it refunded and got the normal one.

But what after Heroes??

Oh, i zoomed through The Painted Man, thought it was excellent, but the last chapter i felt was a bit childish and put me of getting the next in the series.

Mistborn series? I'm on the final book now, really enjoying it.
Also The Way of Kings is great by Sanderson.

Gold Rush - Michael Johnson. You can almost hear his voice when you read it.

Aside from the Horus Heresy series, I do need to read more fictoin. I've been reading way too much 'sensible' stuff in recent years.

It came as quiet a shock to realise how long ago it's been since I finished the Sharpe series. It must have been sometime around 2004/5. Though I've just noticed that I seem to have missed Sharpe's Fury.

Then again, I'm not sure I cared much for either the 'new' books Cornwell wrote or the one's after Sharpe's Company. The series lost it's spark somewhere along the way.

Don't regret reading them though. Helped while away the hours in my old job.

Just finishing The Quantum Universe: Everything that can happen does happen by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw. Nice book and interesting but tbh it's just made me think I need to spend a bit of time refreshing my maths ability as I struggled in parts.

I've got a holiday in 2 weeks so I'm trying to decide on a couple of books to add to my kindle before I go.

I might start the Malazan books again as I got to book 8 a couple of years back but would need to be reminded. Other than that I might go for a biography/autobiography that's not too heavy.

I'd happily take any suggestions as to good holiday reads.

Now on Book 3 of A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), 20% through. Still not enjoying the series to be honest. I'll read book 3 (both parts), as it cost me £10.99, but I'm not sure I'll continue. Don't get me wrong, parts of the storyline interest me, but not all of it. Can't really say too much without ruining the story for others
