What book are you reading...

Finished the first book of the Malazan series. Things got a bit confusing at times, and had to do a lot of flicking back. Still confused as to whether Vorcan was an Assassin or mage, and why was she trying to knock off Baruk? There was that many interactions between characters, that I started to get a very mixed up idea of which factions were allied with which other factions. Nethertheless, will probably end up getting Deadhouse Gates (the next one).

About to start reading the first of John le Carre's Smiley novels, Call of the Dead

2/3's of the way through A Game of Thrones. I have A Clash of kings waiting, but I can't decided whether I should read something else in between or just crack straight on.

currently 60% through A Dance With Dragons, i just read the whole lot, really enjoying the whole series, will be sorry when this is finished as the new one has not been released yet

Depends how much you're enjoying it I think! If you find yourself starting to skim read chapters I'd maybe give it a break. I personally just read one book after another.

Yep really enjoyed it, read the last book a little while ago and find myself wanting to read more! Going to look for a few of the short stories or might even start from the beginning again!

I'm reading Killing Hope a crime thriller by Keith Houghton. Got it free on kindle and is an easy read.

There are some things raised in book one that are not answered until book 6 and there is that much backstabbing and hidden motives don't be surprised if you find you aren't grasping some things.

Deadhouse Gates is immense though, it is one of the best books I have ever read and really wish I could forget it so I could have the pleasure of reading it fresh again. Especially the end :( Enjoy!

Just finished california by bukowski and got about 1/3rd into lord of the flies. One of those books that you are 'supposed' to read that I've missed out on. The tension created between the characters is really unsettling, though nothing out of the ordinary has happened, you get this feeling as you read along that something strange is brewing. Very odd...

John le Carre tinker, tailor, soldier, spy next!

Working my way through the mistborn trilogy, on book 2 now and really enjoying it. Can't put it down!

Have you or has anybody read the way of kings by the same writer,i am just coming to the end of the book and have really enjoyed it and was wondering how the mistborn series compared to the way of kings.

Started reading that from the link, really enjoyed what little I read. Is it in paperback too?

Yep, you can pick it up from the usual places.

Although I just downloaded it in Epub form and read it on my phone.

If you do read it, I would be interested in hearing what you thought of it.

Vorcan was the head of the Assassin's Guild, who also happened be a mage. She was trying to kill Baruk having accepted the contract from Kalam (on behalf of the empire) to assassinate the city's secret rulers - the Torrud Cabal - of whom Baruk leads.
If you have anything else you're not sure of, give me a shout and I'll attempt to explain.

I highly recommend you do purchase Deadhouse Gates and continue with the series. I'm halfway through book 6 (Bone Hunters) and I can honestly say that this is the best series I have ever read, bar none. The main thing to remember is that the scope of the series is absolutely mind blowing, and is by no means an easy read. It's totally worth the effort though, and I would urge anyone who enjoys fantasy books to give the series a go.

Actually I read The Way of Kings then went into Mistborn, you won't be disappointed. Mistborn is actually finished unlike The Way of Kings, have to wait for Sanderson to finish WoT before he releases the next Stormlight book.

In the interest of balance for the other comments I really enjoyed this book. Yes there's all the stigma of it being a classic and a must read but I just found it to be an interesting story following a few days of a teenager.

One of my favourite quotes is from that book:

The Catcher In The Rye said:
Among other things, you'll find that you're not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You're by no means alone on that score, you'll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You'll learn from them — if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry.

Can anyone recommend a good legal or political thriller?

Just read John Grisham's The litigators and enjoyed it. Intending to read The Lincoln Lawyer as well as I enjoyed the film.

\o/ Just seen the blurb for the new Steven Eriksen book due out in mid-September (in the US, I believe it's out in the UK already) - Forge of Darkness. Only halfway through Book 6 so far of the original 10 but can't wait to get on to that, it sounds epic

Now is the time to tell the story of an ancient realm, a tragic tale that sets the stage for all the tales yet to come and all those already told...

It's a conflicted time in Kurald Galain, the realm of Darkness, where Mother Dark reigns. But this ancient land was once home to many a power. and even death is not quite eternal. The commoners' great hero, Vatha Urusander, is being promoted by his followers to take Mother Dark's hand in marriage, but her Consort, Lord Draconus, stands in the way of such ambitions. The impending clash sends fissures throughout the realm, and as the rumors of civil war burn through the masses, an ancient power emerges from the long dead seas. Caught in the middle of it all are the First Sons of Darkness, Anomander, Andarist, and Silchas Ruin of the Purake Hold...
  Sounds ridiculously awesome

Lincoln lawyer is good, but any Michael Connley book is good,
also The Colour Of Law by mark gimenez is a very good legal book imo
