What causing my PC crashes?

Blue screen didn't give an error code that I can recall.. I was tok frustrated to pay too much attention.

Not sure which bios version, but I updated it to the latest one last week

dont have WhatsApp on my phone currently

,you say you updated the bios to the latest version?, i checked asus's website and that would mean your on bios version 0820, a rule of thumb with bios's is never ever update to the latest version as they are usally filled with bugs which need to be worked out, luckly you will be able to roll back to version 0811 as both bios's are the same size, install 2 sticks of ram and download version 0811 and install it, once done repeat the tests with 2 sticks of ram at auto and at xmp, if everything goes to plan the pc should behave normally with no issues

Understood, I will download and install version 0811.
I couldn't see any issues when I removed all my RAM, the RAM connectors themselves look fine too.
I really hope it's just a BIOS bug! That'd be amazing!

I've had enough of banging my head against the wall for this evening so will resume tomorrow and post another update

So my pc has just crashed three times in a row to blue screen while booting.

Error 1: ATTEMPTED EXECUTE OF NO EXECUTE MEMORY

Error 2: IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL”

Error 3: System Service Exception

I didn't even get to download the bios version..

It sounds like there are some corrupt drivers / software on my system? That might be why reinstalling windows "fixed" it last time... For a week at least...

the first 2 errors are related to memory (ram) (looked online and the 3rd error is memory problem's too) , have you tried just running 1 stick just to see if the pc works and not freeze or crash, you may have time to download the older bios to a usb drive then restart and do the flash in the bios, just pick the usb drive where the bios is.

you could unplug all drives apart from the boot drive to see if that helps, run 1,2 or all 4 sticks of ram too, plus uninstall everything from control panel>programs and features it'll be as close to a bare copy of windows without reinstalling again, see how it goes and if you can download and install bios version 0811.

did you find out which bios you are on just to be sure before rolling back

All those boot attempts were with 2 sticks of RAM.

My OS is on my SSD (M.2) and I use a hard drive via SATA for other storage stuff like videos and pics etc.

I disconnected the SATA and it refused to boot.

I've just removed 1 stick and plugged the SATA back in and it's booted up.

I will download the bios now onto a stick and attempt to change the bios version

good luck hopefully it dosnt crash, as long as you get the older bios saved and renamed on the usb drive you can do the flash via the bios so no worry of windows crashing

Success with 1 stick of RAM.

The BIOS is currently changing to 0811

If you happen to get more blue screens, also look at the bottom of that screen not just at the bigger message above (IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL etc) as it sometimes points to the driver/file, for example iaStorA.sys

been talking with the op all afternoon trying to diagnose the problem and we narrowed it down to the cpu, the op can run fine with 1 or 2 sticks of ram at 2133mhz, however installing all 4 dims and trying for 2133mhz ddr4 ram speed results in the pc not posting let alnone boot, tried a variaty of voltages and dram speeds tied to the cpu and dram but no matter what i sugested the op's system wouldnt play ball, even rolling back from bios version 0820 to 0811 didnt fix the problem.

only when the ram was set to 2133mhz and in dual and single channel mode only did the pc post and boot and even game, its very internitant too as the od boot attemp would work and other wouldn't, i sugested to start a rma on the cpu, what do you think @Danny75?

Could be, yes.

The CPU was bought used if I gather correctly. I once had a similar issue with four sticks not working properly because of a tiny speck of paste on one of the gold contacts on the CPU. Cleaned it off with alcohol and solved the problem. Cooler mounting pressure can also cause the same.

Has he tried each of the four sticks on their own, or just the one stick? Reading back through the thread I can't see if all sticks were tried on their own and tested with Memtest HCI etc. Just to put aside that possibility.

It looks like it could be the memory controller on the CPU that is dying and becoming unstable.

I had to replace my 9900k the other week due to having similar issues. Seemed ok for a bit and then crashes again.

Have you enabled crash reports in windows? Download a tool called "who's crashed" and use that to try and get a better idea of what's going on.

I troubleshot my rig for 2 weeks before I replaced the CPU. No issues since. Sometimes leaving the voltage on auto can kill your CPU unfortunately.

This is the chance you take when experimenting with CPU overclocking. I just got lazy and set most to auto with a large clocking increase and thats when the issues started. Started with the odd crash and turned into a much more common problem.

if i recall each stick from a pair of the ram was tested and all seemd ok, but again anything over 2133mhz would cause windows to act werid and opeing background programs to start a game would ista crash the pc, the op even said at 2400mhz on the ram windows would freeze and bsod if a few minutes, they used intel's program tester to check the cpu and ram and i think of one instant running it with the ram at 2133mhz the system indeed crashed, not sure if it was 1 or 2 stick of ram though, thinking back i think it was 1 but i'm not 100%

Yeah. It's ironic how when new to overclocking, or just feeling a bit lazy, most buyers are attracted to the auto-overclocking features on boards for more "safety" when the reverse is usually the case.

I have an Asus Z97 board that can run a 4.5GHz OC on a 4790K with 1.2v. Whereas an MSI Z87 needs 1.28v to run the same. Is the Asus board better? Nope. It just pumps a lot more LLC by default into it lol. And as a result it even runs hotter with 1.2v Vcore than with 1.28v on the other. And apparently the LLC is something more to watch out for than actual Vcore input, from what I've read.

the asus board the op and my own x570 asus board have very good llc only when you start adjusting the vales when overclocking can things start to go wrong, i sugested a manual voltage for the vccio and sa voltages as they were auto and reading up online they can go as far as 1.4v on auto so i said to set vccio to 1.2v and the sa voltage to 1.25v but it didnt work, the only thing that did was setting the ram back to 2133mhz and in dual or single channel mode exclusivly

Ah ok. Well other than check the CPU (he's already checked for bent socket pins) carefully for any dirt/paste and trying a bit looser cooler mounting pressure, it does sound like CPU and specifically what @azazl187 suspects. Imo.

the plot thickens, well find out sometime tommorow, like the op i think we need a rest, its been a torturous afternoon try everything i know to get the op's pc working at rated speeds to no avail, it kinda works but super slow memory
