Here are my requirements:

just want to game
Not Too Bothered about fancy stuff, nice to have a few features though
had a ps2 - thoroughly enjoyed it
xbox 360 has an excellent game catalogue? what about the ps3's?
which releases looking better this year

really u can most likely gather that im looking for a console just to game really, im not into bluray etc but any of u guys recommend me a ps3 or xbox 360 go ahead, no Wii's there terrible imo. So yea, here it is, xbox 360 or a ps3 for me?

last thing is im not buyin the console for movies but i understand both consoles have music features + xbox 360's reliability, is it really that bad and has yours ever broke and how regularly?

If you just want to game, you would be better with a 360. The game catologue for it is fantastic.

I own both consoles by the way.
 
I would say the 360 as that does the job nicely and isn't too expensive these days. However have a look at exclusives, there maybe something you want the PS3 like LBP and also if you want online play you may want to get the same console as your friends.

I really like my 360 though so I would vote for that.
 
360 is lacking on the exclusives front this year compared to the PS3.

About 2 years ago I'd have said 360 without a doubt, now I'm not so sure...
 
Before the fanboys come hither...

Get a 360. The back catalogue is massive with tons of great games. It's a great deal cheaper than the PS3, so you'll be able to get one with a handful of good titles at a reasonable price.

If later you fancy a go at some of the PS3 exclusives save up and get a PS3 as well.

Both consoles have some great exclusives and features, and if I had to pick to get rid of one of mine, I truly think I'd struggle to choose.
 
Game catalogue on the PS3 has had a chance to build up now, but if your not bothered about paying extra for a ps3 to get built in wireless, blu ray, media card reader etc you would probably be best off with a 360, as they are cheaper! Just remember you will have to pay extra for a wireless adapter and Xbox Live (well worth it though)

Im lucky to have had both and now have both in the house again (although the 360 resides in the livingroom as a "family" console)

It will come down to wether you want to pay the extra for the PS3, I think it has a price drop coming its way? so it might make it a good option if you can afford it, tbh, you wont be disappointed whatever you go for

I guess the real question should be, how much do you play games?

If you plan on pkaying a lot and want a great back catalogue then go for the 360. If however you plan on playing the new games as they come out with maybe the odd AAA title you may have missed then it's more difficult to say. Take a look at the exclusives coming out for both systems and make your choice from there.

Also, how much do you play online? If it's a fair amount then it's worth paying for Xbox Live, but if you just play online with the occasional title then it's free on PS3 so you may want to consider that.

I guess there's more to it than just giving a black and white answer as to which console you should go for as a lot of it depends on you and what you want from it game wise.
 
I have both and my PS3 is relegated to a blu-ray player, Most of my friends have 360s so I tend to buy all my games on that, the only games I have on ps3 are exclusives

Just for games it has to be the 360, at almost a third of the price and a huge back catalogue it would be crazy to get a PS3

Also if you did want to use it for media streaming later on the 360 is more than capable of playing pretty much the same as the ps3 nowadays, upscaled avis look better played through my 360 than my PS3 too

I'd go for the 360, Awesome console. The only downside is you've got to pay to play multiplayer online but apart from that the back catalogue is awesome and future releases are looking good.
 
hmmm, so plenty of vote for 360, im a mad fan of msg4 though but is it that good to buy a console just for that?

Nope but its a good reason to buy it for MGS4, Killzone 2, LBP, uncharted etc etc. You wont get titles such as God of war, Gran turismo, Ico etc on anything else so if you enjoyed those games then the PS3 is the one to go for. Either way both will do you fine and in the end its a bout games YOU want to play, also take into considerstion if you are a PC gamer as there are some 360 exclusives that are also on the PC. My best advice would be to wait till after GDC this week, if Sony drop the price as its been reported then im sure MS will do the same soon after.
