What did you do to your bike today?

My Hornet is bogging down at high rpm so I thought I would pull out the petcock and clean the fuel screen thinking that it may be dirty. I pulled the screen out and it looks brand new ...

So, with the tank off already I had a look at the plugs and they were fine too. No dirt or debris in the air box/filter either.

I commute on my bike so it rarely gets a thrashing. At around 8k rpm it feels like that splutter you get when running low on fuel but it never cuts out. If I drop the revs by going up a gear its fine until 8k again and it splutters like it's being choked, hence the reason for pulling the fuel screen out.

Anyone got other ideas of what to check ?

Does your hornet run of a fuel pump? If it does take to cover of the pump of and clean/replace the contacts, maybe the pump isn't functioning right to get sufficient fuel to the carbs for high speed.

it will have a fuel pump somewhere usually its electric diaphragm pump, but they tend to be fine, they will either work or just die instantly, atleast that's what happened on mine

id be checking the ht leads and coils, spray them with wd40 and inside the plug caps, then see if its still missing

does it miss if your stationary and rev to 8k rpm?

can only think of leads and coils, esp if you've been riding in wet weather

you can buy some spray aswell that protects the leads/plug caps from damp/wet

Still raining :( so I got some bits installed on the bike

Evotech Tail Tidy with Ducati Performance LED indicators, really happy with how these look together and the LEDs are nice and bright, stock bulb type can hardly be seen flashing so safety upgrade also!
Just need to drill some new holes in the plate until the V5 comes through and I can get a new one made up.
Also waiting on my seat cowl, no passenger pegs installed but a pillion seat looks a bit weird.

I didn't want to shell out for rear sets so just replaced the stock slippery cast aluminium pegs with the DP machined ones, so much better just riding it up the drive into the garage, the stock ones angle up at the ends like a little ramp for your foot to slide up off and these ones just grip.

ProGrip 717s, used them before and found them great for my larger hands, feel so much nicer than the stock ones and also come standard on the 1199 Superleggera so must be good :D

Just need to get out and ride it more now, fingers crossed for some dry weather!

Sorry for a minute then I thought I was going to get a picture.... waiting ;-)....

funnily enough was reading they're only going to be bringing the special edition in now as they're just not popular in this country. I was looking for a secon bike and looked at the Turono using same engine... RSV4 has seemed a sublime racing bike for years YET for some reason... they just haven't cought on here.

What's your feelings on it... as in why you think it hasn't? I mean it's as good as any BMW 1000rr, Kwaka etc... shame as I've always had a soft spot for it...

I think it's a number of reasons to be honest, I think any Italian bike manufacture that is not called Ducati is going to struggle to shift the same number of units as the Japanese or German marques. Mainly due to the cost and the (some times correct) bad reliability brush they get tarnished with. However, i'm actually happy they are not that popular here, makes it feel more special :)

Aprilia had their fair share of issues with the RSV4, on the press launch i think over half of the bike blew their engines. This was traced to a faulty batch of con-rods but even after that the early 2010-11 bikes had a fair few engine related issues. At the end of 2011 they did some big design changes to the engine and since then the reliability seems to be much better.

Some of you may remember a couple of years back (before I got my D675R/S1000RR) I put a deposit down on a 2010 RSV4 Factory, but after coming home and doing more research, crapped myself, cancelled it and ever since then i have always wanted a newer (improved) one.

So now that they have been around a while and a lot of the issues resolved i took the plunge on a new and made sure it comes with a 2yr warranty :D
The 2014 also benefits from improved electronics, better brakes and 1.5lt bigger fuel tank, and boy do you need it... this thing drinks fuel like there is no tomorrow. Less than 100 miles to a tank if you're on it.

Overall i'm not going to kid myself, it's simply not as fast as the S1000RR, but do i care? hell no. It's much, much more fun to ride, albeit harder to ride for sure. It's so small that when you're licking along at a fast rate you know about it.. being 6ft2 on a mini-moto there is very little wind protection :)

...oh and did i mention the noise. :D

Hit the corners so hard the outside of the tires were discolored :D good day.

Also had to avoid a turtle in the middle of the lane... he was in his shell with his head poking out... felt like Mario Kart.

Going down the coast from where I live people are very bike aware and move over mm nice but today coming home I was on the dual carriageway coming home so no need to move over: but the driver in front decided he would and hit the curb bounced back and forth and nearly rolled the car :D

Fitted my BMW comfort seat, and the results are brilliant! Not only is it more comfortable than the stock seat, it has also raised the seat height by a couple of centimetres. This has increased the distance to the pegs which helps my dodgy knee.

Also fitted my Grip Buddies earlier in the week. Reduces the vibration through the handlebars, and just feels nice to hold.

Hoho :p

Since moving to a new job, my daily commute has increased quite a bit. It's starting to take it's toll, so I'm hoping these mods will help.

Well it revs fine stationary. I did notice that it's only at 75-100% throttle that it bogs down in any gear. Maybe the carbs are needing a spit n polish. I'll sort that out next week when I get back from Simmer Dim. Looking through the Haynes it seems like a bit of a job but I'm an enthusiastic trier.
