What did you do to your bike today?

Not really "my bike" but I will post here rather than a new thread.
As some know I did my first track day at Snetterton a few months back on a CBR600RR with the final session of the day on a BMW S1000RR, after that I decided to book a week in Spain at Circuito De Almeria with the friends who got me to go to Snetterton!

I booked late and the transport was full so I rented a bike from them, it happens that they only rent BMW S1000RRs so I went for it :D
They provided me with the bike, padock stands, tyre warmers, one front Metzeler Racetec K2 and two rear K3 tyres. I had to pay extra for fuel.

On the first day I was very cautious and was lapping in the 2:20s (transponder on the passenger peg) but day two I managed to get my knee down for the first time ever after building up some speed and then progressed from there. Finished the week with a 2:01 which was in the top part of my novice group so I was very happy since I only got into sports bikes this year with the 899 and both my knee sliders are now pretty well scrubbed

A few pictures I took and then some I bought from the track photographer, unfortunately he didn't capture me all the way down but nice to have anyway.

Turn 2, downhill off-camber, I always took it easy down there as two novice riders lowsided, fast guys were knee down all the way

Lots to work on for next time, probably going to do a Superbike School in April to work on body position and technique, then off to Slovakia Ring in June with Track Sense again!
Just need to decide if I buy my own track bike, take the 899 or rent the S1000RR again.

10 days until my MOD2, meeting @ 9.30am, test is at 1pm, i have a feeling it'll be really cold or really wet!

Oooh good luck! it's only 40 minutes out on the road on the test so get nice and warm beforehand and you'll be fine.

Got this through on an MCN email, some interesting numberplates, much nicer than the standard square shape, and they're fully legal.

Looks good just need to ditch that stock can, funnily enough I've ended up with a spare aftermarket one from mine today ;) :D

Nice one

Out of interest how much did they charge for bike rental? I've not done a Euro TD yet, mate has done a few and got the itch for it proper now. Just seems a lot of hassle getting the bike out there. Hiring definitely seems the way to go.

@jp looks like you enjoyed your self,Spain too nice n hot

@phil they look good in red,I'd have to add a bellypan though if it were mine

Yes the weather was great, 20s by midday and dry as a bone!

It isn't cheap but it isn't that bad when you think about all the costs involved with running your own track bike or risking your road bike.
Full details here http://www.tracksense.co.uk/bikehire.html

I did 4 days and paid the higher cost for the lower damage deposit.

I did every session on track to make sure I got my moneys worth and I feel I learnt more in 4 days than I could in years so it was worth every penny to me.

And the social side of a Euro trip is great, we pretty much took over a hotel and the evenings out were brilliant.

@JP, looks great. Almeria is on my list next year with the new track bike.

Seems a fair few of us interested, maybe we should do a OCUK EU trackday? :p

Oh yes. Definitely worth considering doing one of the UK tracks next year for sure.. Snett/Donny/Cadwell. Even if just to arrange a meet :D

(You weren't joking right?! :p)

Are track days expensive?

Not really. Depends on track and time of year. Snetterton for instance, you can get a whole day, usually 7 sessions (20 mins per session) for £69/79 in Spring/Autumn. Donington or Brands GP (full circuit) can be upto £229. I did Cadwell Easter weekend for £110 and Silverstone in June £169. I paid £199 for Donington, it was full GP circuit and included insurance cover (as it was a BMW only day).

Track bikes start around £1000-1500 for a steely CBR600 or an early ZX6R/GSXR600. Spare wheels with wets £300/500. Paddock stands and tyre warmers couple of hundred quid. Then you have to have a trailer or van for transporting bike to/from tracks.

Not too expensive once you're up and running. It's very addictive as some of the guys on here will tell you! :)

@unKle, What about the bike, surely under such hammering on a track changing the oil and filters isn't enough, right?

BTW What type of license is required to ride on a track? Or does it depend on the track too? I'm mainly interested in the UK tracks...

IC3, pretty sure you need a full road licence or an ACU for the MSV owned tracks due to their insurance.
Not sure about all the different power class of licences but sure a CBT isn't enough.

I would be up for an OCUK Track day meet up, can get a discount with No Limits as I now know instructors who can pass it on to us.
