What did you do to your bike today?

Installed it today. Took way longer than expected. There is literally mm of clearance between the exhaust and the indicators. No chance of it fitting with the indicators horizontal, but I think it worked out nicely.

I actually quite like the angle, I think it flows nicely.

I like that, looks good. They do take longer to install, but the instructions are very good and it pays to take your time where electrics etc are involved.

Congratulations! You've started to experience the 'character' and 'unique passion' of owning an Aprilia. Now just pray you don't need any parts ordered from the factory, otherwise your ownership experience will be complete this early on :)
:D:p

They're fickle these Italian beasts :D

Just done some testing there's a few know possibilities. It's not stator/reg as I'm getting the full 60v at 4k rpm from the stator, and getting 13.5v at the battery terminals at 4k revs. Although, it's only doing it once the bike has been running a while so ideally I need to test it once it's got the symptoms.

I'm think it might be the coils.

It just goes to show, Italian motors are to be admired and not ridden/driven! #Mantlepiecebeast

I don't suppose it has a diagnostic port on it? (The V4s do). It does sound more likely the coil packs are breaking down, getting hot and cutting out, especially as you can smell the petrol fumes. Does it run a single coil per cylinder?

Today I:
  • Soaked with magifoam using my new lance
  • Washed with Meguiars
  • Wax all body work with carnauba wax

So shiny now. :D

Plus mine still works, cos it's a Triumph :P

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too, if it is the coil then that's actually a Bosch part, not Aprilia!!

It's a single coil pack for both cylinders, I've removed it and have been testing it, the primary winding resistance is a little high Vs the service manual and the secondary is giving zero resistance when it should be showing the same as the other bit.

It's Bosch part number 0221503037, there's some used ones on eBay, new they're £200...

Replaced my Stator cover, filled up with oil and started her up for the first time since January.

Battery was completely flat and didn't charge up so luckily my friend had his bike with him and we checked it using that. Just need to get the remaining fairings on and a new battery and it;ll be ready to go.

my front break feels like it is either rubbing or has seized up since it hasn't been used in a while. Cause for concern or just have a small ride?

Replacement coil pack ordered, if my sources are correct it's the same coil pack used on my bike as on some Mercs - Aprilia OEM new price over £200. Used Aprilia part - £30-50. Used merc part (fully tested) - £7.09 including delivery...:rolleyes:

It's possible it could be clogged fuel filter (but with only 12k on the clock and only doing it when it's been running a while, maybe not) or others have suggested the fuel pump can play up when it gets warm as the fuel cools it down.

I'll fit the new coil, then fill it with fresh fuel and ride it for an hour or so round my local area :D I could let it idle on the drive but it's loud and I don't think my neighbours would be too happy! Might ride for a bit then find a quiet spot to let it sit and idle, it'll get hot quicker then riding as there's no airflow, the rad fans will kick in but that''s no biggie, no different from riding in a congested city.

Done a bit of digging around and those coil packs were fitted on some other vehicles too. Look up the number 420266070 as well as the number you have.

The same part is fitted to... Can Am Spyder :p

If it's just rubbing, a ride should sort it, otherwise I'd give it a clean first.

That 'thing' also has the rotax V990 engine that's in my bike, so it would use the same coils.

Ordered one which i think should work so I'll see when i fit it this week.

I had a similar issue with the CBR when I bought it. After about 5 break downs thinking the issues was sorted...i found the issue to occur after 30 mins or more of riding. it was the reg/rec feed arching against the frame....this stressed the fuel system and stopped the fuel pump. fixed the wires and found that the contacts in the fuel pump where so bad the solder had softened and nearly let go of the wires!

The slighter the contact the greater the resistance. This is the kind of thing that only takes hold after a while of riding

Just makes a squeaking noise when I push it and felt a bit harder to push back. I'll give it a little ride around my roads and see if that makes it any better. If the weather is nice I should be able to fit the rest of the fairings after work each night. fingers crossed.

Thanks, hopefully it's the coil that's gone - time will tell.

A bit of rubbing isn't unusual, give it a ride, don't use the front brake for a while before you stop and see if one of the discs is hotter than the other. If one is that the pistons might be sticking on a bit.

Awesome I'll give that a go.

Bloody hell that stator refused to come out and one of the bolts rounded off even after using an impact screwdriver. Luckily my uncle was free and he came over and got the bolt out using a angle grinder!! Always handy having a relative who's a mechanic :p

It's now only being held in with 2 out of the 3 bolts but we used LockTite on them so he thinks it should be fine. I'll trust him... for now.

God hearing my bike start up again got me very excited. Hopefully a few nice days this week will allow me to get it fixed. Just need to install some indicators, replace the battery and put the fairings back on. I reckon another 4 hours and I should be done. :D

Mrs gave me some levers are a b day pressie so did that and cleaned up the front caliper pistons....however couldnt start the bike. After 3 turns the starter got slower and slower.... As the only thing I havent changed yet is the battery I just replacing it. Tayna batteries will get me a replacement for tomorrow for an extra £3 on top of normal P&P so doing that. A bit annoyed though as today is a great day and I can't ride :(
