What did you do to your bike today?

Took the S1000R to get fuel last night, seen as the stuff in the tank, has been sat since the 10th of September! And unfortunately, there now seems to be a ticking sound on the left-hand side of the engine, the side damaged in the crash and fixed by BMW!

I'm in two minds what to do - if I call my insurer/BMW to get it looked at, then I'll lose the bike for goodness knows how long, right as I'm just about getting bike-fit again :(

Maybe I should give it a longer run, just to see if it settles down - what a bloody nightmare!

Edit: having a mooch on a couple of S1000R(R) forums, the general consensus is that the engines are pretty noisy, one even suggested that if left sitting unused for a while the exhaust flaps in the headers can cause rattles... wasn't aware of flaps, other than where you'd expect them near the end can - but this gives me a bit of hope at least.
Get better earplugs

Changed the front pads in the S1000RR over the weekend. Was surprised to find it took 10 minutes and required no tools...

Ordered a typically overpriced BMW "Connected Ride Cradle" for my GS to replace the ageing Garmin Nav 6. Was delivered Wednesday, easy enough to install, remove old sat nav, clip in new cradle, job done!

Install BMW's 'Connected' App on my Pixel 7 and pair the cradle via bluetooth, that wasn't so easy and took a fair few tries before it connected, removing/reinstalling app, reboot phone etc.

Once that faf was over it was a case of following on screen prompts from the app, controlling it via the rotary wheel on the left handlebar, works very well and some detailed info that's otherwise missing from ther TFT display on the bike.

Only ridden it once with it during the night, but it works well and it has wireless charging, so no rogue cables (so it should for the price!!).

BMW's nav is ok, but the speed limits on my commute were all wrong, so when I need the maps I'll stick to Google Maps/Waze.

Just reminded me seeing that pic above I need to order a new screen protector :D

Bit of a momentous day - started up this old girl. First time she's run in at least 47 years. Not too shabby tbh. 1949 Norton International 500 single with a TT racing carb. Complete, literal nut and bolt restoration. Looks and smells delightful. My dad is rather pleased with himself! He raced bikes like this back in the day. Getting on and off is a struggle for him now, and he can't start it (hip replacement couple years ago) so I had fun jumping up and down on the starting crank!! He's itching to get out on her though. Excuse the shaky vid, my hear-trate was about 90bpm after starting her lol! Yes, she is noisy, rattly and smoky - all perfectly normal apparently!!!!

Gave the 1250 Bandit a long overdue wash and polish. Even took the front mud guard and chain guard off to give them some attention. Stripped out the dashcam and optimate wiring. She's going to a new home, well - temporary accommodation, on Thursday. I've part-ex'd her for a Kawasaki GTR1400 :D

ABS light came on and the bike was otherwise riding fine. I thought it was possibly a dodgy sensor. I did notice a slightly different sound whilst the bike was rolling but put this down to the new tyres. First step before throwing parts at it was to check the ABS sensors were seated properly and clean. Front sensor which is exposed is usually the culprit but it was fine. The rear sensor on this bike is embedded in the final drive unit, the inductor ring being part of the final gear assembly.

I pulled out the sensor and was greeted by a small piece of metal between the sensor and the inductor ring. That’ll be why the ABS light was on. Where did the metal come from though?
Here it is, battery for scale:

That looks like a bit of the bearing cage. Uh oh. I removed the final drive…

…and took it to a local guy who refurbishes them as a sideline. I picked up a second hand unit and gave him my lunched one. Here is what it looked like inside.

I’m very lucky the bearing didn’t fail completely m as it would have locked the back wheel solid and probably would have resulted in me skidding down the road on my ass. There was no obvious sign other than the ABS light, so I’m eternally thankful that piece of bearing cage lodged itself around the sensor. When I really pushed and pulled hard there was a little movement in the back wheel but it was well within the 1mm BMW spec.

Shaft drive is great until it isn’t!

Man that's one shot bearing!

Edit: I assume you'll get away with changing only the bearing? How many miles has it done?
Rebuilding these final drives requires a 10+ tonne press so I wasn’t able to do it myself. A new part from BMW is £2500. Refurbished unit is about £950. I picked up a used unit for a fraction of that and gave my broken one to the guy who refurbs them. This one only had 28k which is extremely low mileage. I can only guess that there was an underlying fault present.

Rode out to Fish Hill today, weather was great.... when I got home! Cold and cloudy whilst I was riding, so thanks weather app

Hoping I didn't get snagged by a camera van - I honestly didn't see it, and may have ragged past it twice; maybe my brain assumed it was a works van or something... Either that, or I didn't see it as they had only parked up after I spotted people warning bikers, so I am safe.

Guess I need to put it to the back of my mind, as a friend had to wait nearly 6 months for a speeding letter when caught by a traffic car. Their rear windows weren't down either - so hopefully that means the laser doesn't work - maybe they were setting up (I'm clutching at straws lol)

Seen a couple of people on Facebook putting clip ons on their striples today, looks great so I've been looking up the price of some adjustable clip ons to give it a go

can anyone reccomend a phone mount for a kawasaki ninja? its a 125 if it matters.

I was recently looking at mounts too, saw ads for Quadlock everywhere but it just had too many negatives and flags for me, and the price was the nail in the coffin.

I bought two of these in the end, one for my wife and one for myself, they've been absolutely rock solid and don't need special cases or vibration mounts or any of that nonsense:

Was going to fit some engine case protection but not happy with the finish being different! Back they go!

Almost look like they're from different packs entirely.
