What do people want to achieve from being rude?

The pandemic has made people ruder. I can see no positive benefit from being rude to others, especially towards shop and customer service staff.

It just:
. Makes shop workers upset
. Makes other customers upset, if abusive language and physical contact
. You don't get the full attention
. Other customers wait longer to be served as have to work around their rudeness
. You may get refused to be served
. You may be asked to leave which could turn into a ban, if the language and physical contact is extreme
. People are leaving retail (I want to) and no one wants to work in retail due to the rudeness - that's one factor anyway.

Myself and other colleagues are on anti depressants thanks to rudeness. We do have some lovely customers and sadly, are a dying breed. Heard of a handful of lovely customers dying in the past 9 months. If every single customer was lovely and pleasant, my job will be so much better.

If people get a buzz from upsetting shop workers, then there's something bloody wrong with them.'

Somethings are beyond our control such as we didn't decide how many self scans my store has. Its based on average transaction value. Getting kids after school buying sweets after school brings that down plus customers who come in just to buy a newspaper.

The more problems people have the more agitated and snappy they become. They're allowing their stress to pour out in daily life. People who feel bad often take it out on the people around them, especially when they know those people can't kick back.

People do seem to like to throw tantrums nowadays.

Employers should allow staff not to serve customers or put them to the back of the queue like a naughty step. Still kicking off and get security or the police on them.

Behave like a petulant child and you should be treated like one.

I think a lot of people struggle with life and unfortunately they don’t have the emotional skills or maturity to cope, so they take it out on other people.

A few years ago I developed CFS after an illness and my emotional sensitivity is through the roof these days. Even hearing people I don’t know arguing can be agitating or upsetting to me. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who just don’t think or care about others. They see someone wearing a uniform or in a shop etc and just assume they can be as rude as they like. Luckily there are still plenty of good people around.

I know it is unpleasant and some conflict interactions can leave you mentally replaying/stressing it for hours after but you really can't let it affect you that much you have to resort to anti-depressants as a fix.

Some people don't care about other people's feelings so being rude is part of there manipulate behaviour as they will be pandered to.

I find a lot of it is manipulative - I struggle with it because I can't really read people, etc. and sometimes it can be misunderstanding but ultimately my take is they know what they are doing - after a couple of chances I'm pretty blunt with people.

People just seem really angry, but then looking at the state of the country I’m not surprised.

Arrive home yesterday to a woman blocking the lift with her suitcase. So I held the button to hold the lift. Then she gets shirty with me for ‘rushing her’ and then sarcastically wishes me ‘a good day’. I was shocked, all I could get out was ‘I’m not rushing you’.

Cut up on the roads a couple of weeks ago with a guy being in the wrong lane. I beeped since I had to take avoiding action. He proceeds to wind down his window with a load of anger.

The problem is, I feel it too these days. There are moments, like with the car incident, where I could floor the guy, but I try hard to rise above it all. The problem is when you’re having a really bad day yourself.

I might be making it up but I really feel like Covid and lockdowns had a detrimental impact on so many people and their mental health, to the extent that you can see how it’s damaged interactions with others. Might be a sweeping generalisation that everyone can call me out on, but it just feels like it’s generally got worse since.

Same here brother.

When people are rude it's usually there inner anger/frustration coming out, swamp them with kindness usually works but after that punch them in the face. ;)

I'm not a swamp them with kindness kind of person - usually passive/neutral initially which some seem to perceive as weakness then when I've given them a chance in case it is a misunderstanding I give em both barrels so to speak.

My wife works in a café, she has stories daily now about customers being rude and horrible. No way I'd want to work in a customer facing role, I'd last half a day before I would lose it at someone and tell them what I though of them.

Some people are scum plain and simple, that's never going to change. Ideally shops would take a no nonsense approach and just outright ban people like that.
Everyone needs to work in retail. Get called up in a similar fashion to jury service. Get told when and where to do this. If doesn’t change their attitudes, nothing will.

I'm not .

Smiling and being understanding is like putting a foam blanket on a fire but it won't work in every situation. Hence if the cross the line there will be consiquences, and they shouldn't misstake kindness for weakness.

I think it's more of a mirror to today's society. I am sure overall there is less patience amongst the population more so than ever. As mad as it sounds, growing up on fast paced information at your finger tips could be part of it all.

Roll all that into, victimhood, entitlement, self importance and yeh, you get first class bell ends regular.

Plus, I agree, it's a reflection of how their own lives are. Ultimately, there is a lot of pressure now, just to get a house, get a car, have money in your back pocket.... all those ideals we were always promised "got better" as time moved on, things that have always been drilled into us now as "important"... sweeping aside what is really important, respect, morals and being decent to others.

Bit of a preach, apologies but I see it as all part of the same package. Sign of the times, expect angrier people basically.
