What film did you watch last night?

12 Years A Slave - not much can be said about this, fantastic performances, harrowing scenes and an inspection of one of America's worst periods of history. It is a story we all know but told with a slightly different angle, in that Solomon was a free man that got kidnapped and sold into slavery rather than the real unfortunates born into it or shipped in from Africa. 4/5

Foxcatcher - 8/10

Not the type of film you should see when you're tired because it is pretty slow paced. It's a character study as much as anything. The acting is superb from all involved, particularly Steve Carell.

Gone Girl - 7/10

I enjoyed this, but maybe not as much as some other people have. I thought the twist was pretty obvious, and the ending really disappointed me.

Into The Storm. Planck Length/10.

One of the worse films I've ever seen. Terrible effects and acting but then again with that script even some of the greatest actors couldn't put in a good performance.

To say it was clichéd would be an understatement.

Just after they go through the first tornado the young camera man, on his first season and first tornado, wants to quit but his mate talks him out of it and says "in a few weeks you'll have a pocket full of cash sipping drinks on a beach with that beautiful girlfriend of yours". With a line like that in a film with such a poor script the lad may as well have put on a red Star Trek uniform as at that point it was obvious he was a goner.

****ing terrible.

American Sniper - 7/10

I was pleasantly surprised by this. Was expecting to be inundated with American patriotism and drowning in irony but it was actually very well balanced.

Why would you go into a film automatically expecting that? There was none of that in 'Flags of our Fathers' and 'Letters from Iwo Jima' so why expect it in this?

Oceans 13

Tour de force of a casting. Simply love the film, so much style. Only downer is the want to be back in vegas again:/

One of the best in type.

Saw foxcatcher yesterday, and echo what others here have said about the film. 8/10

Also like to echo what people have said about the hunt, its a fantastic film

A Most Wanted Man 6/10 - an Anton Corbijn film so was expecting lush visuals and a slow-paced plot which was what I got. Apart from Rachael McAdams being badly miscast, it kept me interested due to one of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's last turns, but the film didnt really do much if truth be told.

The Imitation Game - 7/10 - Great acting, but hard to keep a story like that from being boring. Acting made the movie.

&

Big Hero 6 - 8/10 - Sucker for Disney, loved it.

Recently seen -

The Theory of Everyhing - 8/10 - excellent movie with great acting.

Taken 3 - 6/10 - better then I was expecting but that isn't saying much. The odd good fight scene, but fairly dull other then that.

Foxcatcher - 7/10 - very slow, and not a huge amount happens but superb acting from the cast, probably could have been told better tho.

Birdman - 7/10 - tough to decide if I like it. Great acting and well shot but a random story that didn't really go anywhere.

The interview - 8/10 - very funny and well worth a watch. I can see why Kim isn't happy tho!

Into The Storm. Planck Length/10.

:D

3 films for us yesterday...

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit. We watched this with the kids. My 5 year old was a bit scared but they both enjoyed it. The animation is incredible and it is very funy.

Good Vibrations. The story of Terri Hooley, who ran a record shop in Belfast through the troubles, as well as championing punk music and running a label that put out the likes of, not least, The Undertones. Interesting story, well acted, nicely shot. It intersperses real news footage, but the film is shot in such a way that it looks more like footage from back then, so it isn't jarring to shift to real news footage from the time, as can sometimes happen.

The Spy Who Loved Me. I've not seen this before. It's definitely one of the better Bond films of that era, even if the disco soundtrack is super cheesy.

The Imitation Game 8/10

Brillant acting but not everyone's cup of tea.

American Sniper 7/10

Clint Eastwood did a good job directing this. I didn't think it was fantastic but it was still worth a watch.

Watched Diamonds Are Forever for the first time in a long time yesterday, as prompted by your "its total guff" comment. I can now confirm, yes, it is indeed, total guff!! Definitely one of the worst Bond films. Quite hard to believe really that it was followed up with one of my favourites, Live and Let Die.

Two films, that coincidentally happened to star Melissa George

Triangle - 8 / 10

I've seen this a few times now, a really underrated and pretty unknown film. Imdb classes it as a mystery/drama, I would say it's got more horror overtones than that, but a good film with a great twist

A Lonely Place to Die - 7.5 / 10

A tense thriller based on a group of climbers in the Scottish Highlands who come across a kidnapped young girl and try to save her.

American sniper

Should have just called it American hero worship

The only Clint Eastwood film I haven't liked and probably because it's so hard to make a film a out the stories of such a big ego. But even then he's over dramatised it. Combine it with clints classic American style and 'that' ending and it's just too over the top for me.

None of the tension from the brilliant trailer existed, no standout performances from anyone. Just dusty shots of Cooper saving everyone and anyone in Iraq and 'perfect' typical Clint shots of him being an ass to his family. The last thing he says before leaving the house at the end is ultimate cheese at its finest. Something I would have never expected from Clint
