What film did you watch last night?

Madeo.

A South Korean schoolgirl has been killed, and she's just good looking enough to make people care. Who is the culprit? Nobody knows. Could it be the local village idiot? Quite possibly, but also possibly not. Whatever the case, the authorities are convinced of his guilt.

Can Yoon Do-joon's mother reach the truth of this mystery before the police send an innocent man to prison? Will Jin-tae get the money he's demanding? Who burned down the house of the old scrap dealer? Why is Sae-beauk Song such a ****?

This one's a slooooooooooooooooooow burn—even by the excruciatingly glacial standards of South Korean cinema—but the payoff is worth it.

I rate Madeo at 26.64 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as a relentless 8/10 on IMDB.

Jägarna II.

A Swedish schoolgirl has been killed, and she's just good looking enough to make people care. Who is the culprit? Nobody knows. Could it be the local dodgy geezer? Quite possibly, but also possibly not. Whatever the case, the authorities are convinced of his guilt.

Can Detective Erik Bäckström reach the truth of this mystery before the police send an innocent man to prison? Will Niklas finally give up his obsession? Who cleaned out the hunting cottage of the local police chief? Why is Torsten such a ****?

I rate Jägarna II at 26.64 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as a chilling 8/10 on IMDB.

The Foreigner.

A young Chinese woman has been killed, and she's just good looking enough to make people care. Who is the culprit? It's the Irish of course, those miserable ********! Do they know her father was Jackie Chan? No they do not, but they're about to find out in the worst possible way. Will the filthy Irish end up double-crossing and slaughtering each other in an orgy of violence and mistrust? Yep, because that's what they always do! Meanwhile, the authorities have absolutely no idea how to handle this case.

Can a humble chef from the local Asian takeaway reach the truth of this mystery before the police send an innocent man to prison? Will Sean Morrison enjoy incestuous sex with his aunt for a second time before the credits roll? Who blew up the toilets in the deputy First Minister's office? Why is Liam Hennessy such a ****?

I rate The Foreigner at 26.64 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as a zesty 8/10 on IMDB.

Kkun.

A South Korean man has been killed, and his son is just decent enough to care. Who is the culprit? Nobody knows. Could it be another South Korean? Quite possibly, but also possibly not. Whatever the case, the authorities couldn't give a toss because something something corruption.

Can Hwang Ji-sung reach the truth of this mystery before the police send an innocent man to prison? Will Joo-chil Jang stay ahead of the game? Who cleaned out the local punters in a massive Ponzi scheme? Why is Park Hui-su such a ****?

I rate Kkun at 24.97 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as a twisted 7.5/10 on IMDB.

The Foreigner - 7.5 / 10

Very good action romp with Jackie Chan as the father of a girl murdered by an IRA bomb who seeks revenge on the culprits. It's not a "Jackie Chan" film.

What Happened to Monday - 7.5 / 10

Not what I was expecting at all! But quite a violent thriller set in a quite dystopian vision of the future.

I am your Father - 6 / 10

Another biopic, this time on David Prowse, the man behind the mask of Darth Vader - who never got recognition for the role. And there's a good reason why!

Early Man - 4/10

Obviously aimed at the younger audience, had a few laughs in it and watching in 4K HDR made certain scenes really pop with that art style.

Tomb Raider is mostly awful. The changes in the story were entirely unnecessary, they spent something like 30 minutes of the film doing incredibly slow and boring character building all of which basically breaks the history of all her characters and was completely needless. I can't recall exactly but I think the first of the recent games puts Croft as someone who was searching for this island with a fairly deep knowledge of history/artifacts/archaeological digs and the like and then they crashed on the island and all hell broke loose. I have no idea why that doesn't work for the film, give them far more time to have her learn, improve, stalk, hunt and battle her way to the finale and instead they added 30 mins of worthless build up that took away from action on the island completely.

Once she got the island, captured, escaped, a couple of minutes of actual content from the game, then a huge change in the story in seeing her dad, then she runs immediately to a campsite and walks in being as obvious as possible with no plan in the slightest and then boom, it's basically the end of the game. They clearly can't fit the entire game into a film, but the general idea of fighting their way to the tomb and clashing with the bad people on the way is a key concept to the film. If they cut almost the entire 30 mins to the island they could have had her escape, have a couple weak/dodgy fights as she tries to make her way to a hard to reach tomb and also added more of the more classic platformer stuff. Like a fairly classic they are taking the main path on the old rickety bridge so she has to climb around some ancient ruins type thing, again a central part fo the films. Or have her do a climbing/almost falling to her death thing as she goes through a second tomb which has a key needed for the main tomb.

The fact they made her previously uninterested in archaeology and had absolutely zero belief there was anything to the curse and happily opened the tomb... when the guys there could simply shoot her and her father after they do it. Whole thing was so wrong to the game and made little sense in terms of changes made to adapt the film, they didn't improve things or make sense, was just cheap stupid writing. Again had they not wasted 30 mins on changing the back story for no reason they could have had more time on the island to work the story better. Also how these guys were happy blowing everything up, but the tomb entrance they didn't want to blow... what?

Then you had the hand to hand combat, when she was drowning the guy she didn't have the guys legs locked or held, she wasn't holding either of his arms, she was about 1/3rd his size/weight/power and he just stayed their drowning in 2 inches of mud. How they didn't hire a bunch of short guys with slim builds to try and make her look bigger I don't know. Every second of that scene it looked like he could simply easily stand up with her on his back.

I think Vikander is gorgeous and I think her general acting is pretty good, but she is tiny both in height and build and looked absurd fighting big guys in this film, the simple physics of it don't work and those scenes looked ridiculous and unbelievable. Couldn't care about boob size, it's just her overall body, 5'5 and skinny winning hand to hand combat with 6 foot 200+lbs soldiers....

Then there is her accent, in Bourne, in Man from Uncle and in this. She's so bad and inconsistent with accents I think all her films need a single moment where she meets somewhere new and the person says, oh, you don't sound british/german/american, she replies with oh I'm british/german/american, but I spent 5 years growing up in Sweden. Let her have a single consistent but not quite local accent. It's not that her accents are exactly bad, it's that she's insanely inconsistent, one word will be a great british accent, but the next will be half swedish and the next will be some bad mix attempting to hold it.

4/10 maybe, there just really wasn't anything good about it. Action was incredibly meh, the build up to the final act is woeful, the bad guy really doesn't do much, her sidekick doesn't do much, the first 30 mins could have been cut out completely with basically no change to the film.

Annihilation , looks good bit weird , one of those films like like Europa Report i really enjoyed but would never watch again. 7/10
One thing that stood out was Jennifer Jason Leigh , thought they had overdone the makeup to make her look old , but after a quick google realised she is in her mid fifties and the last film i saw her in was Existenz which was probably 20 years ago.

Utøya. 9/10

Pretty powerful stuff shot in "real-time" 90 mins of lump in the throat open mouthed and some holding your breath moments.

Very well made and filmed. I'll be amazed if this doesn't win some awards.

I'm genuinely shocked that event was 7 years ago. I can't believe how fast time has gone.

Tomb Raider (2017) - 5/10 - Generic adventure movie No27 is OK at best with some OK action scenes, OK acting and OK story all of which kept me pretty focused for it's runtime while not really sparking my imagination. Young Lara came across as a whiny spoiled kid (on purpose I hope) for most of the movie which didn't really engender her to me so I felt nothing in her scenes of peril. Talking of which, as we've seen the "follow-on" stories (Jolie movies) we knew that Lara was never going to be in any danger which kind of spoils any attempt at making a "will she won't she make it" moment. Overall it felt OK, not good or bad just OK and helped while away a few hours.
