What film did you watch last night?

I caught the end of Airplane v Volcano the other day on one of the Sony film channels. My word, how Dean Cain's star has fallen. Not even going to rate it.

Mission Impossible II and III over the last couple of nights. Great set of movies. I see II is rated a lot lower on IMDb... which I guess might be justifiied. It was super cheesy, with all the slo-mo and doves etc. Proper Jon Wo (I think?) but I would still go a 7/10. III was very good, I think and 8/10. Lots of different little missions, all very good.

Project A II (1987)

"Dragon is now transferred to be the police head of Sai Wan district, and has to contend with a gangster kingpin, anti-Manchu revolutionaries, some runaway pirates, Manchu Loyalists and a corrupt Police Superintendent."

Great action and stunts, as expected, but a story that was nowhere near as fun as the first.

"The vast of night" on Amazon Prime. Chris Stuckmann put me on to this when he said it's reminiscent of things like the Twilight Zone and The X-Files. It's very low budget but, IMO, that doesn't really show. My wife and I were fully engaged for 90 minutes. Some great camera work and impressive turns by the unknown (to me) cast.
It's a slow burn but worth the time. I hope to see more by this director.

One thing to bear in mind is that the male lead has a cigarette in his mouth for the first 5 or so minutes and it makes him mumble a bit. Bear with it and that stops soon enough.

Downfall "Der Untergang"

Probably one of the best war movies made from the German perspective. Shows how far gone Hitler was mentally with him moving divisions about on maps that didn't even exist anymore, talking about soon having 1000 Jets so the Luftwaffe could be rebuilt. and how the Allies invading Germany was part of a plan so he could encircle and destroy them. Acted incredibly well by the late Bruno Ganz.

Mississippi Burning.

Not seen this for years but , man, it still hits hard.

Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoes finest hour and 2 hours of sheer cinematic genius by Alan Parker.

Utterly brilliant.

Brilliant film plus the origin of one of the original Internet memes of angry Hitler.

The Nice Guys

Thought it was a bit forgettable and for a comedy short in the humour department. Russell Crowe had a few good dead pan moments, but he's funnier in real life than in this film.

A double bill of Inherent Vice and Hitman's Bodyguard would probably be better.

5/10

I always wanted to see this since we saw a clip in school, think it was in a history lesson in fact!

Hook with the family. I'd never seen it - good film although perhaps a tad long. Could have shaved 30 mins off and it beena bit tighter and still told the story. 2hr21 a bit long to keep a 9 year old attention. Still once it gets going it's def a lot of fun and Hoffman definitely chewing the scenery. Lovely little cameo by Phil Collins as well. 8/10

I always thought it was outrageous that Ganz didnt get an oscar for that

Speaking of which.

Platoon. Oliver Stone does Vietnam. Great movie, in parts, but I much prefer the book (Michael Herr - Dispatches)

Never knew Johnny Depp was in that movie. First saw it at the cinema on release (when you could go to the flicks and not be distracted by idiots and their mobile bloody phone screens)

Bloodshot 4/10

Generic Vin Diesel action movie, premise to me kind of ripped off Universal Soldier.

Oh and gents, don’t bother watching if you’re at all sensitive about the size of your... plumbing. Some nice disparaging size queen dialogue about 2/3 of the way through.
