What film did you watch last night?

Tenet (2020) - 8/10

A Nolan film through and through, with plenty of his trademark style, spectacle and anxiety inducing bass heavy soundtrack.

The action scenes are spectacular and cleverly put together, the acting is great and the plot comes together superbly by the end, but there is a lot of muddled exposition and the editing leaps make it harder to follow than it should be.

In hindsight, the plot isn’t really that complicated, but the presentation and subject matter overcomplicate things, and throughout it pushes you out of your comfort zone and really makes you think at times.

Rambo Last Blood.

Makes Taken and Skyfall look like kids films :D

Had to check out the last in the series as I saw it was on Prime. Completely over the top and ludicrous but...

...its Rambo!

Nothing will ever come close to First Blood.

Bill & Ted Face The Music

It was ok, bit of nostalgia, couple of chuckles, but did highlight how different my mind was when I was a tween (when I loved the first 2 movies).

6/10

Project Power

Quite enjoyed this, delivered what I expected based off the trailer.

7/10

Bill and Ted face the music 6/10
Better than expected. Fairly amusing.

Train to Busan 2 5/10
Huge disappointment after the first one. This was more like fast and the furious crossed with mad max with zombies chucked in.

Capricorn One. 1977 thriller about first manned mission to Mars. Really good. Tense. Some of the special effects are fun to watch - mainly Elliot Gould's car going too fast ( uses speeded up film very obviously ) but overall a well rounded paranoid 70's thriller.

9/10

Watching 'High Score' on Netflix at the moment, which is quite fun, looking back at how video games started back in the '80's. Very nostalgic for those of a certain age :)

Also making my way through the final season of Agents of Shield. It amazes me how highly some people rate this show. It's fun and I enjoy watching it, but it's so lazily written. Some of the things they come up with, you imagine it's like watching a few 6 year olds play. 'No, lets pretend that the missile has damaged the ship so it will be ripped apart of it jumps now'. 'We've fired, so now our location is given away and we can't hide again, we're in a lot of danger!'. As said, I do enjoy it still, for what it is.

Knives Out (on Prime)

I actually knew nothing about this film at all, other than it had been well received and was by Rian Johnson. It's a very well made film, and a really enjoyable watch. In truth there's really nothing that there's truly original, it's rather a remixing of well trod themes from the murder mystery genre but delivered with exquisite timing and quality. The film shows you just enough for you to feel like you're smarter than the characters when you pick up things before they are revealed but holds enough back to keep its twists surprising. Combine that with well drawn characters, and some excellent performances, and you've got a thoroughly enjoyable romp of a film. I'm tempted to dock a point for Daniela Craig's jaring accent though

8/10 - An excellent watch, but not so exceptional as to be worth going out of your way to watch.

I watched Bad Boys For Life and whilst it seems to have been pretty positively received I wasn't a huge fan. Creating a new, young team similar to Expendables 3 really didn't work for me as it takes the away from the main characters and their interaction which is always part of the fun in the two previous films. Also I disliked the Mexico stuff (similarly in number 2 I disliked the Cuba stuff) they are supposed to be cops not international mercenaries and it just feels off.

That being said there were some good moments between Lawrence (damn he has piled it on!) And Smith and getting return cast like Reggie was amusing. Also the captain :(

So didn't mind it but rumours of a fourth if it becomes about the new the I will pass (despite them being decent actors and doing a decent job) as I watch it for Smith and Lawrence not for the action which is generic.

Tenet - 7/10

First half had loads of things happening and I didn't know why. Wasn't until the second half it all pieced together but more of an 'ah' than a 'wow' moment. Fantastic technical achievement but the characters left me a bit cold.

Have you watched anything with JDW in before?

I watched Ballers and found him a stand out character even eclipsing Dwayne Johnson. He was toned down in this though but knowing his potential I still found his screen presence great and even RP was good which has raised my hopes for The 13th Batman movie.

Nothing to do with the acting, just a poor script. Everything is based around inversion to make each set piece interesting, sacrificing character development. I've no emotional connection to any characters or their motivations of why they're doing it.

After further consideration, I could easily score this 6/10

last night - hadn't seen Jet Li's Cradle to grave II before , But like IP-Man too, this has some great seemless fight scenes
Jet Li - Cradle To The Grave Cage Fight scene

my gotos for cerebral plots - requiring multiple watches - Molly's Game, and the big short, if I had a degree in gambling/shares they'd be more approachable.

Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai (1999)
An African-American Mafia hit man who models himself after the samurai of old finds himself targeted for death by the mob. With Forest Whitaker.

I thought this was strangely brilliant. Days after watching it I still feel mesmerised for some reason. It's one of those films you will either enjoy or not, it certainly is different. Forest narrates his teachings through the eastern philosophy he has learnt as he takes on the mafia. I felt as though the film tried to do a few things but didn't excel in either one of them - we learn of his admirable friendship with a French ice cream truck guy and a little girl. Also his relationship with one mafioso and the mafia family themselves. We have a movie that doesn't spend enough time fleshing out any of these stories but it still comes away with a good 8.5/10 for me.
