What film did you watch last night?

Interstellar

Quite a good movie but keep falling asleep each time I watch it (3 times now:p)........ Hope to completely finish it tomorrow:)

Best cinematic experience I've ever had watching that.

Good Time (on netflix)

8.5/10. Faast paced Crime/Thriller. Thought Pattinson was excellent as the central character. Makes me think he'll do a pretty good job as Batman.

Pulp Fiction 9/10

Part of my Saturday night's Classic Film series viewing with my 16 year old son whilst Strictly is on in other room. Series has also included Leon (10/10); a Beautiful Mind (8/10) and Collateral (6/10). Part of my role to educate him.

Pulp Fiction has aged very well. The script is still as good as it gets. Samuel Jackson and John Travolta are fantastic as the leads. I have taken 1 point off as I feel it lulls a bit in the middle and could be about 15 mins shorter. Still essential viewing though.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney)

I sort of feel like this film had been long forgotten. It’s not hard to see why Disney has never really backed the film and promoted it post-release. Relatively, it’s a very dark and often a cruel film. As a child, it would be unremarkable (with its complete lack of ‘mascot characters’ or ‘hummable fun tunes’). As an adult though, there is quite a lot to enjoy.

The animation is very striking and perhaps some of the very best that Disney put out? At times you can see they were pushing boundaries with subtle computer animation - I didn’t pause to stop but a lot of background crowds appear at a glance to be computer generated and cell shaded... so appear sharp and full of motion yet have actually little detail on them. Whatever it was it was a pretty cool trick. At other times scenes were laced with other additional computer affects. All in all very pleasing on the eyes.

There’s a lot you pick up on as an adult too. The music is far more complicated and interesting than the typical Disney affair. Esmerelda is drawn to be hot hot hot - hurrrrgh!!! The villain is subject to compulsive lust (aren’t we all?) and is a truly horrible pious person... Probably the most ‘evil’ villain in any Disney film since he’s so relatable to villains in real life.

Even the narrator character is a confusing mish-mash of a neutral storyteller and a villain. All in all it’s just a bit different and that goes a long way.

My only bugbear is that the comic relief (in the form of some ‘wisecracking gargoyles’) is mostly unwanted and almost never amusing. Probably because it’s so jarring to the rest of the film.

Quite a bold film for Disney to put out really. Not bad at all.

7.5/10

The Revenant

I've been meaning to watch this one for a while but never got round to it, partly because of its length. It's a wonderful shot, atmospheric, film with a gritty but simple plot. Despite the running time, I didn't find myself getting distracted or bored which is substantially to its credit. That said, I thought it had a believability problem: I could buy his avoiding death in an unlikely fashion once or twice but it just kept happening. Add in a couple of "how could you be so stupid" moments and some oddly fourth wall breaking camera choices, and I found my suspension of disbelief ruffled. I think it particularly hurt here because it's such a grounded, gritty feeling film that relies on that earthiness to carry it along.

A bit flawed, but still excellent 8/10

Captain Marvel. 7/10.

Dicided to watch all the marvel films in chronological order. Hadn't watched this one yet so good it was 1st in the list. Really enjoyed it, visually impressive, humour had me laughing a good few times, typical Marvel.

Peppermint - 6/10

Like if The Equaliser was crossed with John Wick - but happened to be a young working mum (played by Jennifer Garner :)).

Nothing wrong with this film, decent action flick, but does nothing special either.

Surely Captain America is first?

Gran Torino - 8/10 great character development and good wit with a fairly moving story. Second watch but the first was 12 years ago when it came out, potentially not PC enough for these days but worth a watch.
