What film did you watch last night?

For clarity, I haven't seen Irreversible but it doesn't sound anything like Shimmer Lake. It's a bit like Fargo in its setting, style and humour and although it's categorised as 'dark', there's nothing too shocking in there.

For sure, i'm aware of Shimmer Lake and apart from the reversed story telling perspective, nothing links them.

The Buddy Games - mediocre.

Has some real familiar faces, but somehow just seems to miss the mark. It's not the worst movie I've seen this year, but there are a lot of movies like this and this one just doesn't do it as well. However, it's definitely serviceable as a 'have on a second screen while gaming' kinda thing.

The Godfather.

A film that for some reason I previously hadn't gotten around to watching. If it was any less than full marks for its acting and setting, it goes the whole hog for Simonetta Stefanelli

Exorcist 3 / Legion

I think it's probably my favourite horror of all time. I love the original. I will always love the original and it will always be one of the greatest films ever made, period. But there's something about Exorcist 3 that feels so much more tangible to me these days. It has the best balance of tone I think I've ever known in a film. Take more away from it every time I see it!

Outlander (2008) - 7/10

Basically Alien but with Vikings. As a B movie its great entertainment, but I think it would have been better if it had used some Viking myth or folklore rather than its sci-fi origins.

The story is predictable but passable, although the tone is far too serious and it’s a bit slow at times.

Some of the CGI is laughably bad and the anachronistic dialogue is annoying, but the cast put on a great performance and I really enjoyed it.

Tremors 7: Shrieker Island (AKA Tremors 7: Yes they're still making them). 6/10.

Watched this with my father as Tremors and it's first few sequels are some of his favourite films (we end up watching at least 1-4 every year or so), and it's an enjoyable enough watch with some more variations on the creatures, and I think a bigger budget than 5 or 6 (and better story), but nothing like as good as 1 or 4.

Worth watching for a couple of hours of silly fun if you're a fan of the earlier films.

Secretary (2002)

7/10

And am I the only one who considers Maggie a minx?
Maggie is a minx, and seems to have been good in everything I've seen her in.

Fatman - 5/10 - Wow the trailer for this REALLLLLY mis-sold what type of film this would be, I mean I was expecting a dark/black comedy around the absurdity of Santa being real and disgruntled kid putting out a hit on him after receiving Coal at Xmas but WOOOOW was I wrong. It is dealt with 100% seriously, as if it were an everyday Thriller/Hitman film instead, and one which deals with really serious Adult topics like creeping depression between loved ones, child abuse, graphic death, abuse of Government power vs people in debt, the current generation of Nihilist children who have an increasing lack of moral compass etc, it's really not made as a dark comedy in away way. I mean there's a 1-2 "jokes" but they aren't delivered as if they were meant to be funny, but more as if it were someone just stating a fact and it just happened to be funny after the fact.

Bad trailer aside I really liked all 3 leads (Gibson as Fatman, Goggins as Hitman & Jean-Baptiste as Fatmans wife) and once I got my head away from what I thought it was going to be to what type of film it actually was, I enjoyed it far more despite some flaws in the "universe" they created to allow Santa to be real. I mean it's not a great film in any way, and my score of 5/10 means just that, it was average, not good but not bad, just OK but it passed 90mins quite effortlessly.

Freaky 2020.

Highschool Teen body swap with a Psycho killer.

Cliche and moderately amusing. No plot surprises. Cant suggest paying full price for it at a cinema (if you can even go to 1)

Directed by the same guy as happy death day, feels just like it lol.

Onward (Pixar)

I have a love hate relationship with Pixar. They are really good (now) at including some pretty heavy emotional subjects in their films and whenever they do this, it’s always amazing - 10/10. BUT they also layer their films with grating characters and poor design choices. So it’s always a case of whether the good stuff can carry the bad.

I can’t decide in this one. There’s some real heart-aching stuff in there, perhaps the best they’ve ever done, but there is a lot of guff. I’m not sure there is a single character that I particularly liked or would want to see more of. The older brother was so irritating in the first half. The policeman thing and the lion.... oh god.

The world itself also felt a bit forced and lifeless.

Yet the plot arc was good and, as said, at times emotional.

A real mixed bag for sure, but on balance worth watching. Just be prepared to have to get passed some grating characters.

6.5/10
