What film did you watch last night?

A film that was recommended in here a while back.

Red Rock West (1993)

Quite enjoyed this. Although I don't think it's as good as some of the critical reviews will have you believe. Decent performances all round and Nicholas Cage never goes full on Nicholas Cage, which in this film is a good thing.

6/10

Shining Lake 8/10 - Great little thriller/dark comedy, told backwards from the night bad things happened.

Judas & The Black Messiah 6/10 - Strong cast and attention to detail but overly long, I thought

The King of Staten Island 9/10 - Kept putting this off because Pete Davidson, but he shines in this. Another great ensemble cast and I find I can never go wrong with Judd Apatow.

Watched 6 Days after seeing a youtube documentary on the MP5 and how popular it became worldwide after the events in this movie. It's about the attack on the London Iranian embassy around same time Thatcher came into power. Not brilliant but kept my attention - 6.5/10

Watched two yesterday

The Invisible Man - thought was fantastic had me gripped throughout - 9/10

The Silencing - thought was pretty good better than many of the reviews - solid 7/10 - although maybe my score is higher than would have been as thought the cinematics and music were really good

Enjoying my them on my ZT60 plasma - which wasnt working properly but after a bit of TLC of additional hoovering the fans etc now works perfectly :)

Chaos Waiting.

There is a damn good reason why this was filmed in 2017 with reshoots in 2019 before being released in 2021. That’s cause it would have been terrible then and it’s still terrible now.

The King of Staten Island - 7½/10

Had been meaning to watch this for a while, the post above reminded me. Was a good, nice movie. Nothing spectacular, just a nice movie.

Overlord - 6/10.

Got very camp at the end :p But Nazis and zombies are a classic combination, so it's hard to go too badly wrong. Needed more dinosaurs tho.

Dredd 2012

Stand by my earlier opinion. it's a bit meh, ok to switch the brain off for. but it's overly stylized malarkey. that said, there's worse ways to kill 90mins and i've watched much worse. still think the stallone effort was a lot more fun.
if it's any consolation i keep meaning to rewatch dredd as i think i was in a crappy mood the night i watched it :p. but BR2049 barely just scrapes a meh from me and that's only cause i loved the first.

You genuinely believe the Stallone Dredd movie was better that Urban's?

Have to agree with @Thekwango. They're very different movies, but I found the Stallone version much more entertaining than Karl Urban's Dredd. That said, I don't really know or care much about canon. I watch a film purely for entertainment value, and Stallone's version was a much more enjoyable, if cheesy, film to watch.

I never mentioned better ;) both are meh films. But at least sly’s had a bit of fun about it.
The newer one was just an all round poor effort that seemed more intent on shocking with excess gore. It was 2 judges trapped in a building killing everyone, that was literally the entire films story. Unless that scenario is done exceptionally well it’s dull as dishwater. And showing peoples heads turning to rubber when shot up isn’t doing it exceptionally well.
It was a totally forgettable film, imo.

The Guardian - 7/10 - A seemingly forgotten film with Kevin Costner and Aston Kutcher as an Instructor/Student combo with Kutcher learning to become a US Coast guard rescue swimmer. Costner as always is just excellent but the bigger surprise was seeing Kutcher actually pulling off some extremely well rounded acting. The story itself is just a same old re-tread of the grumpy old instructor vs know-it-all kid who slowly begin to respect each other as the instructor see's himself in the new recruit, and the immature recruit whose forced to grow up fast by his instructor/father-figure, all followed by a final end-piece where the mantle is passed from Instructor to Student etc.

Whilst the overal story is utterly unoriginal, the two lead performances are genuinely fantastic (alongside a very good supporting cast) and the script is very sharp making the story feel fresh and the set-piece ending and its stunt work are genuinely breath-taking in scope.

I grew up with Dredd and 200AD etc - so Urbans version was much more like the comics. A gritty post-apocalyptic world where Judges are judge, jury and executioner in Mega-Cities.

That may well be the case but the film was still pants but that’s obviously just my opinion.
I do get that they were trying to go for the almost comic book look and feel to the urban film. Just didn’t work for me. I also found Stallone’s portrayal much more intimidating. KU, who I really like as an actor, didn’t really have a whole lot to do other than walk round in a suit shooting people. They coulda stuffed anyone inside that gear.

that’s the beauty of film though. One persons meh film is another’s favourite.
