What film did you watch last night?

The Tomorrow War - 3/10, although that generosity is purely because it had some decent special effects/CGI at times and some notable actors. Plot holes, underused story threads, an entire cast of characters you never connect with or feel anything for, baffling and nonsensical character decisions, a boring soundtrack and some truly stupid dialogue at times.

Chris Pratt was entirely wrong for the role and his character clearly wasn't written with him in mind. I was also staggered to read on Wikipedia that this was originally destined for a full theatrical release, every part of it feels like generic "kill all aliens" rubbish that ends up straight on DVD/TV/streaming.

Watched it a few nights ago and feel largely the same. I would actually give it a 4/10 as i did enjoy the first half/two thirds, then it just went REALLY stupid.

They should have ended it when he returned, or had some cool twist/loop thing where him telling the world where the creatures are, ends being the trigger for actually releasing them or something. The whole buddy comedy section with the volcano kid and a small group of them just bypassing all the world's governments to go and somehow dig out an alien spaceship buried miles underground with a few bits of C4 was immensely stupid. It was like Chris' character Andy from Parks and Recreation wrote it

The aliens were very cool though and their introduction was awesome, and the CGI was generally very good. Best not to think about the plot too much otherwise you will just realise it makes zero sense.

I am working my way through Cagney films - Heard but never seen these two, will have to watch. :)

Angels With Dirty Faces is basically about hero worship and how that hero needs to be something he isn't to ensure his "fans" never follow the same route as him. Honestly I love this film, its a simple story but with a powerful punch in the end.

Yankee Doodle Dandy (I had to import it on blue ray but you can get it on DVD) - true story of the life of George M Cohan, Cagney always wanted to be a singer/dancer (like Fred Astaire) but ended up being typecast as a gangster/bad boy. Interestingly, Fred Astaire turned down Yankee Doodle Dandy and the part went to Cagney instead. Cagney was a very skilled tap dancer and the the end scene in the White House where he taps down the main stairs was ad-libbed. Cagney became the very first actor to win a Best Actor Academy Award for a musical performance for this movie. I'm not a musical movie lover, but I make an exception for this movie. And of course it gave us Cagney's (not so well known) movie quote "My mother thanks you. My father thanks you. My sister thanks you. I thank you". A completely different movie to Angels, but I wholeheartedly recommend it as a Sunday afternoon watch.

Cruella - 4/10

Liked the girl, story was sort of OK but tailed off. Half hour too long. Chubby dude spent the whole film doing a fairly poor job of impersonating Bob Hoskins.

Sizing up a few films to check out and was wondering what the folk here think of one or more of these. :)

The Man Who Wasn't There: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243133/?ref_=ttls_li_tt

Sinister: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1922777/

The Faculty: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133751/

Blood Father: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3647498/

I've most recently seen a documentary - Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief:

Very interesting and well worth seeing if, like me, you enjoy docs as well as movies.

Reminds me of many a year ago when walking along Westen rd in Brighton and being approached by a lady selling a book about Dianetics.
I did actually go inside for a chat, purely out of curiosity, but backed out when the sales pitch was turned up a notch.

Old. The problem, for me, with M Night Shyamalan is he peaked too early with The Sixth Sense. I never really cared about any of the characters and the trademark Shyamalan ending was meh. The sweeping camera shots got Old faster than the characters.

Watched Blood Father a few months back. I thought it was a pretty good film that doesn't outstay it's welcome at around 90 minutes. There's nothing new or ground breaking but I doubt you'll regret watching it.

7/10

I've always liked Mel Gibson as an actor, I can't really think of any stinkers I've seen him in.
