What film did you watch last night?

Have you heard that Neil Blomkamp (District 9) is looking at remaking this?

I love the original but I also love District 9 and would like to see what he could do so am torn by this news.
Yes, same. Normally I would say to leave well alone. But it might be interesting. I would want to see reviews before parting with cash for a cinema ticket though.

Warcraft movie (Prime) - Wasnt as bad as i remembered. Pretty enjoyable as a movie although the plot was a little simplistic but the acting was ok. Travis Fimmel (Ragnar), Ben Foster, Paula Patton and others put in a good shift. The CGI was quite good but can be overbearing in some moments. It was a little daft in places but still a guilty pleasure because of the game. 7/10.

Watched Die Hard on a plane, Air Force One last night. Hadn't seen it for years, terribly cheesy 90's action film, loved it. Harrison Ford was good as the President but Gary Oldman stole the show. 7/10.

Re watched Margin Call. 8/10

Some great performances in this, set during the day before the 2008 financial crisis. The film shows the harsh reality of investment banking and how ruthless it can be.
In 2008 I was working in the IT department for Barclays. At about midnight I had a call from my manager saying everyone needs to come into work in the next few hours and to cascade that down to my team. We were going to make an announcement to the market that we were completely solvent and not about to go under, and we didn't want any IT glitch causing the markets to think we had a financial issue. It was a bit surreal back then. You could feel people genuinely worried.

Black Bag - 8/10 on that one, really enjoyed it, loving Fassbender in his various spy roles at the moment, and always fancied Cate Blanchett, so she was a bonus.

American Gangster (Prime) - I cant believe i have never watched this movie before. This is a classic Ridley Scott movie at his best imo. Phenomenal cast, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Josh Brolin, Idris Elba and others. Follows the story of the rise of Frank Lucas (Denzel), a notorious drug lord who infamously seized the drug trade and cut out the middle men that shook the underworld. Richard Roberts (Russell Crowe) a detective stumbles across this power shift and starts investigating to tackle this rising drug epidemic. Really enjoyed it and wished they make more movies like this. It really shows how good Ridley Scott was compared to some of the more recent films he has made. 8/10.

Fallguy - 5/10 Okay popcorn movie but I just never felt engaged with it. Might be me but felt emotionally flat except the odd laugh.

The Beekeeper - nope/10, turned off after 20 mins, utter carp with Jason Statham dialling it in. I don't mind a ridiculous plot for a bit of fun but this was just awful.

Presence (2024)

Apparently the marketing material made Presence look like a more cookie cutter horror film, which it isn't... it's more of a ghost story with the kind of real world horror that you'd find in a drama. It was directed by Steven Soderbergh, shot on location almost exclusively inside a real house, in long, drifting camera shots and uninterrupted takes. It uses mostly (if not entirely) natural light, and a minimal score.

There's no doubt that Presence has flaws. Some of them are fairly significant and make the film feel like it wasn't as polished as it should have been. It felt like a film that was made quickly and inventively, as more of an experiment than a calculated business venture. With certain story elements that seemingly serve no purpose. Which is odd considering the guy who wrote (David Koepp), is one of the highest grossing screenwriters of all time. There was also some technical aspects that weren't my cup of tea. But... it was still interesting to watch and think about. The audience scores on rotten tomatoes show that it's not a film for everyone but if you're like me, and you like slower paced, more understated films. Then it's worth checking out.

Logan Lucky (2017)

Another Steven Soderbergh film. Logan Lucky is a heist film, about a couple of "hillbilly" brothers, and their associates who hatch a plan to rob the underground vault at a NASCAR track. There's a line in the film that kind of sums it up, when the heist is referred to (in reference to Soderbergh's previous films) as "Ocean's 7-11". The film is a little under two hours long and I found the first half an hour to be slow but once the film picks up pace, it's entertaining, funny, and unpredictable. My advice to anyone who watches the film is, if you find it slow going to begin with, then persevere as it did turn out to be an enjoyable film in the end.

Having said that though... the film did feature a sizeable role by Seth MacFarlane. Who sucked. I think he always sucks though... then again, perhaps he's just a brilliant actor because his character is meant to be a douche bag. The role he was born to play I guess.

Transformers One with my lad (12), it was really good just the right level of humour and action along with some origin elements for transformers, time flew by and it also had a great soundtrack. Solid 8/10 for me

Last Breath - movie based on a true story where a team of saturation divers work off the coast of Scotland to perform maintenance work when things goes wrong. Its a race against time battling the conditions to save a crew mate's life 100s of metres in the sea. Surprisingly good thriller where it really made you feel for the characters and events. Great shift put in by Woody Harrelson, Simu Lui and Finn Cole. Highly recommended if you like these type of search and rescue movie. 7/10

Disney’s Snow White (2025) - 7/10

An impressive production with great songs and acting performances but it doesn’t do enough different to not feel like an unnecessary remake.

The CGI dwarves look weird but the CGI animals are extremely cute and there’s plenty of vibrant colours in the costumes, settings and dance numbers.

There are a few inconsistencies in the plot and I thought the story ended poorly, but the pacing is good and as a magical fairytale, there’s lots to like with ample visual sparkle and cheer, if not originality.

Last Breath (2025) - 8/10

It’s an amazing story of overcoming the odds to survive but is similar to other documentary type films of this style, focusing on the human aspects of the event rather than the job.

The inclusion of real footage makes it more authentic and conveys some of the atmosphere and stresses of the environment and makes you appreciate the work they do.

Good acting, but does drag a bit in the middle due to a lack of suspense.
