The Nun - Weakest of the Conjuring series so far, too many pan to the side and oh look something behind her for my liking. The Soundtrack was great first time I've heard Gregorian throat music in a film in years.
"Skyscraper". It's basically Die Hard for the new gen but nowhere near as good. As usual, Johnson's charisma helps make it watchable though. Nice to see Never Campbell again too and she's still very beautiful. The plot is garbage but the effects are excellent.
It's getting silly now though how they have to shoehorn some military or law enforcement background into the plot to explain Johnson's physique though. The fact that he's an amputee in this is completely pointless and genuinely feels like some exec wanted the writer to tick a diversity box.
Watchable but not something I'll ever re-watch (and my wife is a nut for The Rock).
I mean it's not god awful, but it's getting there. There's certainly a few very neat ideas in here which would could have served it really well had more been done with them (the language barrier between the Americans and the Norwegians almost becomes a mechanic that could have played out nicely), but the whole thing starts to flounder at the end of the second act.
And that CGI... approaching 'Scorpion King' levels of bad during certain scenes. I'm not one of those snobbish prudes that dismisses CGI and it's presence in every movie and even taking into account that Bottin and Stan Winstons designs where never really going to be bested, there's not one point where the creatures feel in any way tangible. Even if the CGI where top notch it still wouldn't work. There'd still be that odd uncanny valley effect where by the body horror just wouldn't feel totally believable.
Yep. All the fans were hyped when they said it was gonna be mostly practical effects, then they released it with pretty much everything 'painted' over...
I just dont care about dinosaurs anymore, not since the first film really, seems like the plot was stolen from several other films, kids sort of enjoyed it. 2/10
Ah yes, almost forgot, saw the latest Jurassic park thing over the weekend too 5/10
My biggest problem, other than the poor story, is that I just don't like Bryce Dallas Howard as an actress at all. Her character was highly annoying and she does this weird stare thing when trying to appear shocked.
Of course plenty of over the top action scenes and cgi as per usual Hollywood fare.
I didn't think much of the last one and this is certainly no better.
Time to quit milking the cash cow on this one I think.
Watched a few scenes again the other night and I'm fairly sure you're right. You can see the practical stuff often just out of focus or trailing out of shot on the rare occasions they keep the camera still.

If her dad wasn't called Howard, she wouldn't have a career. She worked in Black Mirror only because her character was supposed to be a vapid fake person looking for approval, her entire acting style is put on a cutesy voice and, well that's about it. She's awful in both films though in slight fairness to her, her character in both films is utterly absurd.
THe lack of care she showed in the first to the activist type person they turned her into for the second was such a stupid u-turn and her willingness to go to the island for absolutely no reason, to drag other people with her.
Like I said, as I didn't want to give too much away when slating it before, up till about the middle of the film I thought it was an apocalypse/disaster film with dinosaurs happening to be involved, and frankly that made more sense. The entire second act was awful and had they not rushed through the first act it would have made a half decent ending.
THe whole thing with gotta save the animals, it's so stupid. They already have the DNA, they literally made that new dinosaur with the DNA/data they had, there was never a single reason to spend a single penny on capturing the old dinosaurs as they could just grow new baby dinos and you know, having only baby dinos they would be easier to contain and easier to ship/sell. The buyer just has to wait a couple years for a big dino, boo hoo.
The other absurd part is the lack of oversight. Somehow America gets to decide if the dinos are saved despite being you know, Costa Rica and not the US and in the US taking control and knowing the risks of outbreaks and the simple fact that this is getting to watch dinosaurs go extinct for the second time.... not a single satellite, military ship, volcano observer, researcher or simply interested parties watch this dino theft happening.
If a random island is about to explode you'd get a half dozen research ships around the island to watch. If that island had dinosaurs on half the world would send a ship tow atch and monitor. THe idea this entire operation went on and not a single person was watching them do this and transporting them to... I'm not even sure where it was. Truly stupid writing.
I wouldn't be surprised if the island blowing and dinosaurs being saved was the original ending but some exec said, make that the middle of the film, we want follow up films where people are chasing and fighting dinosaurs in big cities across the world. So they added a terrible plot on how dinosaurs get spread around the world.

Completely agree with everything you have written there.
The whole film is full of plot holes and the second act is pretty appalling.
Bryce Dallas Howard certainly wouldn't be a Hollywood actress without her dad being a famous director. She's quite possibly one of the worst actresses around at the moment in my opinion. She's fairly attractive, but that's where her plus points end.
For all its faults, the film had its entertaining moments. Definitely won't be rushing to see it again though.
John Wick the original.. Had my eyes rolling like bowling balls. Come on, how did this get a 7.3 rating on IMDb? it was a complete joke. I like movies to be over the top and all, but this was over the top of mount Everest in an alternative universe !
