What film did you watch last night?

12 Strong, despite a few decent actors it was pretty poor, 4/10.

Megan - 7/10
Not seen it so watched it last night to see if I wanted to go to Megan 2.0
Enjoyed it and a lot less killy than I thought it would be.

Megan 2.0 - 6.5
More Aliens compared to the originals Alien where they have ramped up the action and removed the suspense, feel not quality.
Decent enough

Matusow (Poker Documentary on YT).

For those that have enjoyed watching the antics of the well-established names on shows such as Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker,
then this might just be for you.

Not among my favourite players (though I do like him), but the important thing is I'm just glad to see he's doing alright.

A Real Pain - 3/10

It felt like one of those films that will, or maybe did, win awards but no "normal" people understand why anyone thought it was any good.
Nothing really happened, the characters didn't seem to grow or change. Would not recommend.

My Life as a Courgette

Low key animated film about a child’s time in an orphanage.

The emotions on display and difficult circumstances can be felt but it doesn’t really go down any introspective journeys that may have elevated it. It’s more or less unfortunate children acting like children for a lean runtime. Which is fine, but I was left wanting a little bit more, especially after being so impressed with Memoir of a Snail.

6.5/10

Gladiator II

Watched this Saturday night. Although the storyline was predictable, me and the wife really enjoyed it but we felt like the ending was rushed. I'd watch it again, 6/10 for me.

Empire Records

A true cult classic. It appeared on Netflix last night, and having not seen it in years I was worried how it'd stand up, but both my wife (who'd not seen it) and I enjoyed it. Objectively it's probably terrible, and it bombed hard at the Box Office, but I love it. It's goofy and doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's got a great cast, a lot of heart, and it's laugh out funny with loads of memorable, quotable, moments. It'll also get you checking Wikipedia for Liv Tyler and Renée Zellweger's birthdates to see whether you're a paedophile.

A completely subjective 9/10.

Companion - 8/10
Good combo of thriller and comedy,

Novocaine - 7/10
Very much my sense of humour and quite a few "ewwww" laugh moments (esp in the guys house).

The Taking of Pelham 123

Pretty average and yet in all I had to finish it. Very much a 'comfort watch' of its time although Travolta and Washington are pretty good in it, as you'd expect. There's just not a lot of meat to the bones of the story and a few things feel a bit forced, particularly the police car chase scenes which felt tacked on or heightened in importance so the film had a bit more excitement about it. Ending was a bit pedestrian as well.

The Killing of a Sacred Dear (2017)

Another weird film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, at the end you question why you finished it, yet it was strangely compelling.

Strange acting styles, almost stilted and monotone delivery from most of the main cast. Inappropriate dialogue. Odd lens choices and camera angles. Obscure soundtrack.

Add all that up and it's almost unwatchable, like many of his films. Yet he gets you to watch to the end without feeling like you wasted your time.

X-√6+Y/π/10

I might give this a go as it presents similarly to The Lobster, which I thought was excellent. His films are definitely hit and miss though. The Favourite was OK but Poor Things was pretty dire albeit artistically Wes Anderson'ish.

Watched the first half of Heat last night. A rare moment when a remake is better than the original (LA Takedown).

Does it qualify as a remake when it's the same writer and director?

Haven't seen the original TV film/pilot, but I'd imagine that the 1995 film would be better simply by having a better cast and a larger budget than the original.

F1
It just didn't hit the spot with me.
Yes it's got quality in sound, visuals, actors etc. I've seen it being compared to Top Gun Maverick & I can remember after watching that thinking damn, that was fantastic for it's genre.
This just wasn't!
Maybe because I'm more into jets & war type films & have no real interest in F1, although I really enjoyed Ford v Ferrari & tbh much preferred that to F1.

The blairwitch project

I can remember seeing this at the cinema & it being rammed as at the time it was ground breaking.
This was the days before phone signals everywhere within a days hiking , phone cameras & led torches.
Doesn't really hold up to now.
5/10 For nostalgia.
