What going on with the price of dogs

I had to get my dog put down yesterday so i started looked around for another dog and the going prices seems to be around £2000+ for a lot of them

(I paid £500 for my westie in 2009)

I have a 4 months old Golden Retriever and she was £3000. I also know loads of people who have got dogs recently, so the demand certainly is there.

Yes, it's nuts.

Wanted a golden retriever puppy, but prices are like 3-4k.

Totally insane.

Also, the rescue places are a bit useless. They never seem to have many dogs in spite of me reading articles that are constantly in the news that there is an influx of puppies and dogs that need rehoming. Personally I think that's total bull.

Il just wait for prices to get back to normal...or just won't have a dog.

Don't bother with places like Dogs Trust and bigger charities, look at a smaller one. We found our boy through a place called Phoenix Rehoming and they were so good. We had to pay £345 as an adoption fee but he'd been microchipped, snipped etc.

This is going to end badly for a lot of dogs.

When (mostly) everyone goes back to the daily grind and has to leave their dogs alone at home for hours people are going to realise that dogs don't like it. They'll come home to either or all of the 3 P's - pee/puke/poo due to anxiety or boredom of the animal and blame the dog of course. They couldn't cope with (or want) an animal before lockdown and they won't cope afterwards. Dogs are for their life, not just lockdown/
Christmas.

I think dog rescue centres are going to be like ebay with GPU's once things get back to normal and supply levels out.

Didn't pay a penny for a pedigree black lab. He died last month at 17 and I'll never likely have another dog unless the chance came up again like it did. No way I would allow someone to charge me mutiple thousands for a dog, I'm sorry but that's just a mug tax and they shouldn'tbbe allowed to do that, nor should anyone pay it.

Our remaining dog could do with a companion but it's not gonna happen. I would only ever adopt, all dogs in my life have been somebody else's failures, but unfortunately official rehoming has such heavy restrictions that it's a miracle any ever make it out the door. I have kids and no garden which rules us out by their standards 99% of the time. Ridiculous really given the experience I have with dogs and the amazing life all my dogs have had. 3 walks a day, regulaor trips to the mountains but no, that's no yard stick when you don't meet this strict set of nonsense rules that don't apply to me. Really frustrating.

Not sure to believe her or not, but my neighbour says she sells her French Bulldog pups for £8k each!!!

My mate paid 2k for some breed, might be a beagle.

Supply and demand, everyone seems to have a dog now, two mates who were pretty 'never having a dog ' have both gotten dogs during lockdown, not sure how it will work out when they both go back to work in the office as do thier partners.

They shot up in price considerably when lockdowns happened, A friend of mine ended up getting a rescue puppy from Romania and it worked out a lot cheaper than having a dog from the UK.

Problem with the rehome places is many of them are being rehomed because they are mental. Same with cats.
This is why you get to see them/see their history first.

We've had 3 pets from rehoming places and all have been great. No issues at all.

Why is it a 'mug tax'? People spend far more money on useless tat. £2k for hopefully 10+ years of loving companionship from a dog seems good value. The downside is scum breeders taking advantage.
