What going on with the price of dogs

Why is it a 'mug tax'? People spend far more money on useless tat. £2k for hopefully 10+ years of loving companionship from a dog seems good value. The downside is scum breeders taking advantage.
I think it was a poorly worded version of "nobody wins": the world gets more dogs bread which are not required, and people spend far more than they should. The latter makes the breading thing even worse.

Is a £500 or £100 dog less loving?

I have had dogs for the last 40 years and prices were always very reasonable until now. Even free because people couldnt sell them.

I used to buy golden retrievers for £350, i cant believe they are £3000 now.

If i was ruthless and greedy i could make tens of thousands probably, my neighbours daughter does it i think but its a vile thing to do using a dog as a money making machine

I understand why people buy, same reason people buy new cars instead of used. It's a preference and more special I guess. But that was my point, the scum breeders. COVID pricing or not it's ridiculous money and it shouldn't be like that given how many people bin off their animals so quickly when their lifestyle changes. Guess I'm just bitter, my life has revolved around my dogs and was very lucky to bring a working stock Lab home all those years ago but I'll never pay for a dog, not to the tune of thousands. I guess my example of it being a very high bar to re-home a dog is the real problem. I reckon more people buy becasue the criteria is otherwise impossible to meet. It would be for me with kids and little outdoor space at home but I couild easily take on a project dog and give it a life most other dogs would never see.

Prices are getting silly. I’ve been looking recently and even 1-3 year old dogs are going for over 1k. It’s like some have realised they can make some cash and they’d rather cash in on their dog.

I even saw one advert wanting over 1k for a dog that could no longer be looked after as the owner had starting doing 12hr shifts! Surely when you take on a dog the first consideration is your job and whether or not you can look after them.

I agree with previous posts that there’s going to be a car crash in a year or so.. both from there being an excess of dogs but also from dodgy breeding where every Tom dick and Harry are breeding to make a quick 5-10k.

This is going to end badly for a lot of dogs.

When (mostly) everyone goes back to the daily grind and has to leave their dogs alone at home for hours people are going to realise that dogs don't like it. They'll come home to either or all of the 3 P's - pee/puke/poo due to anxiety or boredom of the animal and blame the dog of course. They couldn't cope with (or want) an animal before lockdown and they won't cope afterwards. Dogs are for their life, not just lockdown/
Christmas.

I think dog rescue centres are going to be like ebay with GPU's once things get back to normal and supply levels out.

This and it breaks my heart. My hope is with people spending so much on them they'll give them all the love they deserve.

We lost one of our dogs a few months ago, I would like another one but prices are insane. I remember having Jack Russells for very little money when I was younger, £200 or so. Mongrels used to be given away, but you don't seem to see many these days.

That's because they now have fancy names, and an even fancier price tag

Cockadoodle for example

Won't be surprised if wild dogs start becoming a problem as the RSPCA simply won't be able to keep up with the amount of delinquent dog owners abandoning their 'loved' pets nor the breeders who can no longer shift their product at prices they wanted.

Yep. Super sad. I'm waiting for my neighbours to do this. They did the classic lockdown thing and acquired a German long haired pointer puppy. We recently found out he is going back to 5 days in London and she is redundant and looking for a new job... only time until it is gone I reckon.

Price of jack Russell's has gone insane the last 2 years. Unfortunately I don't have a bitch of breeding age but my stud dogs done a pretty trade over the last 6 months or so.

This is like when Gibbo posted in the poor home buyers thread asking if he could game the system to buy his GF a house to rent out. Reading the thread is useful for a bit of self awareness on sentiment :p

We recently tried to take on a rescue...at the end of the process the ****ers wanted to keep their names on the microchip. Sod that. If you want to do that or don't trust the people you are rehoming with then meet some of the ongoing costs. We meet a lot of the criteria for rescues (home a lot, garden, no kids) but still they find ways of making it damn difficult to give those animals a loving home. I swear they just like the power trip of denying or lording it over potential new owners.

Alternatively we found a lovely little lady that needed a new home (and some house training) from someone that had other dogs that were attacking this one so we took her. Still not cheap mind, but not thousands and we got to test her out with our existing pack. All ours or mixed breeds and cost a couple of hundred quid each. As much as I'd love a golden retriever it's never going to happen at these silly prices.

Dogs Trust, constantly need dogs rehoming and won't ignore you.

This. We've never owned a dog or cat in our life that wasn't a rescue, trust etc. They're full of personality and life. Paying for animals isn't something I can understand tbh, people seem to think they're 'damaged' because they were pre-owned or strays when it couldn't be further from the truth.

We got a dog a couple of weeks back. Had to pay through the nose for her.
We would have adopted a rescue if we'd been allowed to. None of the centers we visited would house a rescue with a child under 12 in the house.

Would they be open to prosecution if a dog they rehomed to a family attacked one of the children?

Yeah prices are mental.

Guy I work with breeds chow chow puppies, he’s had people from all over the world trying to get one of his puppies which he’s listed at £4500 each.
